Research Notes:
On 22 February 2002, Nadine Ramirez (133 East 400 North, P.O. Box 776, Driggs, Idaho, 83422) wrote the following to R. Clayton Brough: "I guess it was two years ago that I wrote you and you so kindly sent me information on the Jane Bingham line to help in my planned research on the ancestors of Jane Bingham. I appreciate very much your input and wanted to report to you at long last on my efforts, which were, unfortunately, not very fruitful. I centered my research to the south and east of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, within a five mile radius of Gleadless. I attempted (and succeeded, I believe) in searching every parish that existed in the early 1800's in the area, including southern Sheffield. I was unable to find any extension of the Bingham line that we could be sure of. I was surprised at how sketchy the English records are. My conclusion is that their parents came from elsewhere outside the five mile radius but I was unable to take it any further. I was comforted by knowing that extensive extraction work has been done on these English records.... Most of the parishes I searched had been extracted. I am enclosing a copy of the family group sheets on the two families I was working on as there is a little more information than you had given me. Gleadless and Handsworth (in Yorkshire), Norton and Woodseats (Derbyshire), are all towns that still exist today. I didn't find anything like Ouloton or Overton in this part of Yorkshire but there is an Ouloton five and a half miles SE of Leeds (Yorkshire), an Owlerton two miles NNW of Sheffield and a couple of Overtons elsewhere in Yorkshire. I hope to get back to it someday and search further. Still, the connecting ties that link families together are what seem to be missing."
On 12 August 2003, Clayton Brough (4329 South Stafford Way, West Valley City, Utah, 84119) extended the radius search started earlier by Nadine Ramirez and discovered that Thomas Bingham was christened on 26 Feb 1777 in Norton, Derbyshire, England. The christening record for Thomas Bingham reads as follows: "Thomas s[on of] George and Elizabeth Bingham, [of] Magahay [in Norton, Derbyshire, England]" was baptized on 26 February 1777. The family of George and Elizabeth Bingham--along with numerous other Bingham families--can be found in the Norton Parish Registers (FHL Book #'s: 942.51/N2 V26n[1] and V26n v.2), Magahay--also called Maugerhay (see FHL Book "The Place-Names of Derbyshire, Part II, FHL #: British Reference Area: 942,B4pn,V.28)--is a small area in Nortin, Derbyshire. Nortin, Derbyshire, is about seven miles southwest of Handsworth, and about seven miles south of Sheffield, Yorkshire (formerly called "West Riding"). Also, Handsworth is about seven miles east of Sheffield, Yorkshire. According to the parish marriage entry of 1765 for George and Elizabeth Bingham, they were both "of Sheffield."
