Genealogical records on this family were provided by Marie B. Nielson, RBFO Genealogist, 2004.

Charles Hassall

The christening of "Charles Hassall" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 1471086, Item #9), which states that he was christened on 3 November 1776 at St. John's church in Longton, Staffordshire, and that his father was "Wm [William] Hassall" a "Gr. Collier".

The marriage of "Charles Hassar" and "Alice Brough" is listed in the Bishop's Transcript of Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 421578), which states that they were married on 14 June 1801 and that "Charles Hassar" was a "Potter" of "Stoke" [on Trent] and that "Alice Brough" was of "Stoke" [on Trent].

According to the christening records of his children, Charles Hassall worked as a "Potter" between 1802 and 1818 and as a "Potseller" in 1822.

The burial of "Charles Hassal" is listed in online FindMyPast, which states that he was buried on 2 March 1828 at St. John's church in Longton, Staffordshire, England, that his "Abode" was "Lane End" and that he died when he was "50" years old (born about 1778).

Charles Hassall is not listed with his wife, Alice, in the 1841 Census, is not listed in the 1851 Census, and his wife is listed as a "Widow" in the 1861 Census--as follows: In the 1861 Census, "Alice Hassall" is listed as being 79 years old (born about 1782), born in Trentham, a "widow", and residing with her married son, William Hassall, and his wife Grace and two of their children, on Warren's Lane, Blurton, Staffordshire.

Alice Brough

The christening of "Alice Brough" is listed in the parish register of Trentham, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 96895--which was a copy of Trentham Parish Register in book form: FHL Book # 942.46, B4, Volume 38), which states that she was christened on 20 November 1780 in Trentham, Staffordshire, and that her parents were "Rich [Richard] and Ellen Brough".  Also, the christening of Alice Brough is listed in the parish register of Trentham (FHL Film # 1526191, Item #17).

In February 2012, the BFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of "Alice Hassall" from England, which stated that she died from "Bronchitis [and] Natural Decay" at the age of "84 years" on "30 January 1866" at "Russell Street", Longton, Staffordshire; that she was the "Widow of Charles Hassall [a] Pitcherman"; and that the "informant" of her death was "Elizabeth Blundert [who was] present at her death [and was of] Lower Russell Street [in Dresden,] Longton".   Research Note: The death date of Alice Brough is listed in the LDS Ancestral File as being 30 June 1886--which is wrong as it would have meant that she lived to be nearly 106 years old--and no such death (in 1886) is listed for her in the online FreeBMD.

The burial of "Alice Hassall" is listed in the parish register of St. John's, Longton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 1471087, Item #14, page 363), which states that she was buried on 4 February 1866 at the age of "84" years old.

In the 1841 Census, "Alice Hassall" is listed as being 60 years old (born about 1781), born in Staffordshire, and residing with three of her children (Richard--age 30, James--age 25, and Harriett--age 15), on Furnace Road, Longton, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire.

In the 1861 Census, "Alice Hassall" is listed as being 79 years old (born about 1782), born in Trentham, a "widow", and residing with her married son, William Hassall, and his wife Grace and two of their children, on Warren's Lane, Blurton, Staffordshire.

Relationship Note:  The patronymics of the children of Alice Brough and Charles Hassall support the conclusion that Alice Brough who married Charles Hassall was, in fact, the daughter of Richard Brough and Ellen Parrott.  For example: Alice Brough and Charles Hassall's named their first son "William"--apparently after Charles father; their second son "Charles"--apparently after his father, their second daughter "Ellen"--apparently after Alice's mother, and their third son "Richard"--apparently after Alice's father.

Marriage Notes for Charles Hassall and Alice Brough-159

The marriage of "Charles Hassal" and "Alice Brough" is listed in the parish record of St. Giles, Newcastle under Lyme (FHL Film # 1040775, Item #5), which states that they were married by Banns on 14 June 1801, that they were both "of the Parish of Stoke", that Charles Hassal was a "Potter, and that the marriage was witnessed by "Wm. [William] Hill" and "Richard Brough"--who was probably Alice's father.  Also, the marriage of "Charles Hassar" and "Alice Brough" is listed in the Bishop's Transcript of Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 421578), which states that they were married on 14 June 1801, that "Charles Hassar" was a "Potter", and that Charles and Alice were both of "Stoke" [on Trent].

Research Notes:
1) In the past, some individuals have submitted this marriage to the IGI as having been between Alice Brough and a Charles "Harper", however, this is a mistake. This marriage (in FHL Film # 1040775, Item #5) was carefully reviewed and verified by the BFO Research Committee in February 2012.
2) The IGI (via an initial LDS Patron submission to the Ancestral File in 1983 by Robert McKinnon Smith of Inglewood, California) lists Alice Brough as having married a Samuel  Wright on 3 August 1800 in Trentham, Staffordshire.  However, no reference source accompanied this submission and subsequent research by the RBFO Research Committee failed to discover any such 1800 marriage in Staffordshire.  Nevertheless, an Alice Brough did marry a John Wright by Banns on 25 March 1805 in the parish church of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire (as listed in the Bishop's Transcript of Stoke, FHL Film # 421596, and listed in the IGI via an LDS Patron submission in 1957), but this Alice Brough (who was supposedly born about 1784 and married in 1805 to John Wright) was not the same individual who married Charles Hassall in 1801.

William Parrott Brough

The christening of "Wm. [William] Parrott Brough" is listed in the parish register of Trentham, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 96895--which is a copy of Trentham Parish register in book form: FHL Book # 942.46, B4, Volume 38), which states that he was christened on 9 November 1782 as the son of "Rich and Ellen Brough".  Also, the christening date of William Parrott Brough is listed in the parish register of Trentham (FHL Film # 1526191, Item #17).

In 1827, William Brough is listed in the christening record of his son, Thomas, as being a "Gent." of "Caroline Place", St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex.

In 1833, William Brough is listed in the christening record of his daughter, Charlotte, as being a "Servant" of "Caroline Place", St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex.

In the 1851 Census, William Brough is listed as being about 70 years old (born about 1781), born in Trentham, Staffordshire, England, living in Long Ditton, Surrey, and working as a "Butler" (servant) to Lady Elizabeth Clements (who was born in Dublin, Ireland).

The death certificate of "William Brough' was obtained from the GRO in England by the Brough Family Organization in June 2023, and stated that William Brough was a "Servant" and that he died on 1 May 1853 at Long Ditton, Surrey, England, of "Disease of Heart and Arteries some years Gangraena [Gangrene] Sepitis [Sepsis] 15 weeks certified" and that he died at the age "73 years" (born about 1780).  The informant of his death was "Sam[uel] Jolly Mathews" and "In attendance" was "Thomas Ditton".

Clements, Vicar of Norton, Diocese of Durham.  Unfortunately, the location of his gravesite is no longer known.

DNA Analysis:  In 2009 a direct male descendent of John Bray (b.abt.1806) took a Y-DNA 46-Marker test (via Ancestry.com), and in 2018 he took a Y-DNA 111 test (via Family Tree DNA).  Both Y-DNA tests revealed that he was a direct descendant of the male Brough's of northern Staffordshire, England--as listed by the Brough Family Organization (BFO).   After extensive analysis the BFO Research Committee reached the conclusion that John Bray (b.abt.1806) was possibly the son of William Parrott Brough (chr.1783) and Mary Bray (chr.1786).  Further research into this possibility is ongoing.

Mary Bray

Research Note:  FamilySearch (via FHL Digital Films # 7605007 and 7566589) lists a "Mary Bray" who was christened on 27 May 1789 in Leek, Staffordshire, England, as the daughter of Isaac Bray and Jane.  However, this Mary Bray was buried on 28 January 1790 in Leek, Staffordshire, England.

In 1824, William Brough is listed in the christening record of his son, William, as being a "Servant" of "Ash Green", Staffordshire, as follows: The christening of "William Brough" is listed in the parish register of Trentham, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film 1526191, Item #19), which states that he was christened on 8 February 1824 in Trentham, Staffordshire, and that his parents were "William and Charlotte Brough" of "Ash Green", and that William Brough was a "Servant".

The burial of William Brough is listed in the Bishop's Transcripts of Long Ditton (FHL Film # 397744), which states that he was of "Long Ditton" and was buried on 5 May 1853 at the age 73 (born about 1780).  His burial ceremony was performed by Francis N. The christening of "Charlotte Stanley" is listed in the parish register of Borden, Kent (FHL Film # 1473708, Item #3), which states (in FamilySearch) that she was christened on 13 February 1785 in Borden, Kent, and that her parents were John Stanley and Charlotte.

In the 1841 Census, Charlotte Brough is listed as being 50 years old (born about 1787-1791), NOT born in Middlesex, working as a "Laundress", and residing with her apparent daughter, Charlotte Brough (age 12), and a George Durling (age 12), at: Caroline Place, Parish of St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex.

In the 1851 Census, Charlotte Brough is listed as being 62 years old (born about 1789), born in Kent, Nottingham, married (although her husband is not listed as residing with her in the census), working as a "Laundress", and residing with her unmarried daughter, Charlotte Brough (age 21), at: 22 Caroline Place, St. Lukes, Chelsea, Middlesex.

In July 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate for Charlotte Brough, which stated that she died on 21 June 1856, at the age of about "68 years" at "10 Ranelagh Grove" in Pimlico, Belgrave, Middlesex, England, and that she was a "Widow of William Brough, a Butler".

(Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 261.)

The information on the Family Group Record  of Richard Brough and Ann (or Mary) Mellor has been taken from the 2000 RBFO book "The Broughs of Staffordshire, England and their English, American and Australian Descendants," pp.86-89.

The burial of "Maria Brough" is listed by David Bethell in his research report to the RBFO (page 179), which states that the parish register of Leek, Staffordshire, lists the following entry: Burial: 12 Feb 1726/1727: "Maria uxor Ricardi Brough sep spud Meerbrooke".  Also, the burial of Ann (or Mary) Mellor is listed in the (British) National Burial Index, 2004 (via the Federation of Family History Societies) as held by the RBFO.
