John Jolley

John Jolley "of Millstreet, Leek, Staffordshire" is listed in the Family Search Community Trees (2010) website at: http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I94914&tree=Welsh. This website attached the following reference to John Jolley's name and geographical information: "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland" (1847-1906), Burke, John, (London: Henry Colburn, 1847-1906), FHL book 942 D2buf 1847-1906., 1848 ed. vol. 3 p. 48.

John Jolley was born in about 1654--during the time of the English Civil War of 1642-1660. Unfortunately, "many church and civil records were destroyed, lost, or simply not kept during the English Civil War (1642-1660." (For further details see about this matter, see Ancestry.com., or any reliable reference source).

The children of John Jolley and Mary Rigglesworth are listed in "The Jolley Family Book", originally produced in 1966 by Bryant Manning Jolley and subsequently edited and republished by Ronald Lynn Jolley as a 2nd edition in 2005 (FHL Book #: 929.273, J683jo. 2005, Part 1, Pages 1-2).

Research Note: "The Jolley Family Book", originally produced in 1966 by Bryant Manning Jolley and subsequently edited and republished by Ronald Lynn Jolley as a 2nd edition in 2005 (FHL Book #: 929.273, J683jo. 2005), stated (in Part 1, pages 1-2) that "John Jolley" was "a descendant of Thomas Jolley" and that he "may [or] may not be [a] brother or a son to Thomas Jolley" who married "Margaret Skinner" and that he "fled to America" and "settled in Boston, Mass. in approx. 1600/1648" as a "Farmer" and that he married "Mary Rigglesworth". However, recent research (in 2011) suggests that the John Jolley who "settled in Boston" was probably not the "brother or son" of "Thomas Jolley" who married "Margaret Skinner"--as this John Jolley was of "Botham Hall, Cheddleton, Staffordshire, England" and died in 1694 in England. Instead, it is possible that the John Jolley who "settled in Boston" may have been the son of "Thomas Jolliffe" who married "Sarah Bulkeley" on 21 April 1647 in Ipstones, Staffordshire, England, and that this John Jolliffe was born in about 1652 in Leek, Staffordshire, England.

John Jolley and Mary Rigglesworth and thier children are listed several times in the IGI under different estimated birth dates and geographical locations.

Research Note: As of 2011, the proposed Jolley ancestry from John Jolley Sr., of Pitt Co., North Carolina (who was born in about 1762/1765), backwards in time to John Jolley of Leek, Staffordshire, England (who was born in about 1654), is rather questionable and is still under investigation.

Mary Rigglesworth

Research Note: The IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film # 844558) lists a "Maria Wrigglesworth" who was christened on 31 March 1650 in Heptonstall, Yorkshire, England, and whose father was "Josephi Wrigglesworth".

John Jollye

"John Jollye, of Leek, mercer." is listed in the "Pedigree of Jolliffe of Staffordshire" (fold-out sheet) in the book "The Jolliffes of Staffordshire and Their Descendants: Down to the Year 1835", by Hylton George H. "John Jollye" is listed as follows in the book "Olde Leeke: Historical, Biographical, Anecdotal, and Archceological" by Matthew Henry Miller, 1900, page 199, under the section "Ancient Leek Tradesmen" as follows: "1568, July 2. John Jollye de Leke, marcer (and A.D. 1550)".

"John Jollye" is listed in the book "Olde Leeke: Historical, Biographical, Anecdotal, and Archceological" by Matthew Henry Miller, 1900, pages 100-101, under the section "The Joliffe Family" as follows: "The earliest record of the Leek Joliffes is found in about the end of the reign of Henry VII., A.D. 1509. They were found to have settled in Leek, a town stated to have been famous for its ale, cloth, and ribbon from Tudor times, that is from the last quarter of the 15th century. There were Joliffes in Warwickshire in the 14th and 15th centuries, and in Dorsetshire, Cornwall, and the Isle of Wright from the 14th century, but there is no trace of any connection with the Leek Joliffes, and the arms are different. ...There was a...Joliffe at Shenstone in Staffordshire, in 1497, but not connected with the Leek Joliffes, the first of whom known to fame was John Jollye of Joliffe, born at Leek in the latter half of the 15th century. He was living in 1550 and 1568. He was engaged in trade as a mercer of 'marcer,' and is thought to be identical with the Jollys, or Joliffe, who obtained in 1596 a twenty-one years' lease of the Manor of Shenstone. This mercer had three sons, Thomas, John, and Richard, who all resided in Leek in the middle of the 16th century. He was assessed for the first payment of subsidy, or the then income tax, in 1545, granted by Parliament for two years in Henry VIII.'s reign, and again in 1547. In the sixth year of Edward VI. (1553) he was one of the four Leek churchwardens. The parish of Leek then included the townships of Leek and Lowe; Endon, Longsdon, and Stanley; Bradnop and Onecote; and Leek Frith quarter, which includes Rushton James, Rushton Spencer, and Heaton, each of which townships nominated respectively a churchwarden, each of whom was appointed by the Vicar of Leek, thus making with Leek four churchwardens, but leaving only one for Leek; this has been the custom from time immemorial to the present. He received from the Commissioners for the use of the Parish Church, divers pieces of plate--spoils most probably of Dieu-la-cresse Abbey."

In "The Jolley Family Book", which was originally produced by Bryant Manning Jolley and subsequently edited and republished by Ronald Lynn Jolley as a "2nd Edition" in 2005 (FHL Book # 929.273, J683jo, 2005; FHL online CD # 2571), the following historical outline appears (in Part 1, Page 1-2):
"In America, the Virginia and New England branches of the Jolley family appear to have descended from a common ancestor, John Jollie or Jolliffe, Sr., Dorset County England, living about 1500. John Jollie or Jolliffe, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth had two sons, John Jollie or Jolliffe, Jr. and Richard Jollie or Jolliffe.
"John Jollie or Jolliffe Jolley, Sr., who settled in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1600, was descended from John Jollie of Jolliffe, Sr. and Elizabeth as was immigrant John Jolley, Jr., who came to Virginia about 1650 soon after the execution of Charles I. John Jollie or Jolliffe Jolley, Sr. who settled in Boston married Ann, widow of Robert Knight. He was a select man and one of the patriots who took part in the revolt against Gov. Andros. No further record of him can be found.
"The pedigree of John Jollie or Jolliffe, Sr. ancestor of the Virginia Family is traced as follows: John Jollie or Jolliffe, Jr., about 1530, brother of Richard Jollie or Jolliffe of Dorset Co., married Margaret Ranchey. Their son, Thomas Jollie or Jolliffe [Jolley] of Leek, Stafford Co., married Margaret Swettenham. To Thomas Jollie or Jolliffe [Jolley] and Margaret Swettenham was born a son William Jolley, Sr., who married Anne Webb, daughter of Benedict Webb. William Jolley, Sr. and Anne Webb were the parents of four daughters and two sons: One son, William Jolley, Jr., became a merchant in London. He married Lady Mary Hastings, daughter of Ferdinando, Earl of Huntington. The other son, Thomas Jolley first married Margaret Skinner, daughter of Richard or John Skinner. Margaret was of royal descent through her mother's family who descended from Edward I. He was first of the Plantagenet family to occupy the English Throne.
"John Jolley, a descendant of Thomas Jolley and Margaret Skinner, was the father of John Jolley, Sr., who fled to America soon after the execution of Charles I, in 1648. He had been loyal to the King and therefore was an enemy of the Commonwealth Government of England....
"The following chart shows our Jolley Ancestral Line.
