"HMS Hawke, British, Edgar class First Class Protected Cruiser. Torpedoed by German submarine U-9 off Aberdeen [Scotland] in the North Sea [on 15 October 1914]. The torpedo hit amidships and HMS Hawke capsized within 10 minutes. The destroyed Swift and the steamer Modesta picked up 71 survivors but about 500 crew were lost."
