In the 1861 Census, John Gregory Osmond is listed as being about 32 years old (born about 1829), born in Newton St. Cyres, Devon, a "Farmer [of] 260 acres [with] 8 labourers and 3 boys", and residing with his wife, Emma, in Newton St. Cyres, Devon, England.
In the 1871 Census, "John G. Osmond" is listed as being about 42 years old (born about 1829), born in Newton St. Cyres, Devon, a "Widower" who was "Farming 300 acres, employing seven labourers and one boy", and living with three of his children and several servants at: Hayne Barton, Newton St. Cyres, Devon.
The English birth certificates of his first three children lists John Gregory Osmond as either a "Farmer" or "Gentleman".
In September 2009, the Osmond Family Organization obtained a copy of the death certificate of John Gregory Osmond from New Zealand, which stated that he was died on 18 August 1888 at the age of about 59 years at Russell Street & Ponsonby in Auckland from ""deranged intellect - 2 years", that he was buried or cremated on 20 August 1888 in Waikumete, that his father was Edward Osmond and his mother was Sarah Rew, that he had lived for 9 years in New Zealand before he died (or arrived in New Zealand in about 1879), and that he was 35 years old when he married Harrick (also known as Harriet or Harrich) Poole.
The death of John Gregory Osmond is listed in the online New Zealand BMD, which states that his death was registered in 1888 when he was 59 years old (born about 1829).
Based on the birth dates and places of his two sons, Gregory Benmore Osmond and Herbert John Osmond, it appears that John Gregory Osmond and his wife, Amy Benmore Pentecost, emigrated from England to New Zealand sometime between 1877--when Mary Edith Osmond was born in England, and 1881--when Herbert was born in New Zealand.

"My grandfather John Gregory Osmond of Hayne, Devon, married Amy Benmore Penticost on 21 February 1872 in the Anglican Church of Littleham, Exmouth [Devon]. They lived at 'Spestos Grange', Grange Place, near Crediton, Devon. This was a country home, he was a farmer, and he bred pedigree hunting horses. My cousin visited this home in 1961 and took some photographs.
"It appears that John Gregory Osmond lived in the districts of Hayne [Devon], Newton St. Cyres [in Exeter, Devon], Bow [in Crediton, Devon] and near Crediton [Devon]. There were five children of this...marriage and my grandparents and their five children came to New Zealand - 1890/1891 [but should be 1880-1881], when my father [James Ingram Osmond] was about 2 years old, and settled in Auckland. John Gregory Osmond died in Auckland on 19 July 1888 [but his death certificate states that he died on 10 August 1888], aged 59. Amy Benmore Osmond died in Auckland on 13 June 1920 aged 72."

In September 2010, the Osmond Family Organization obtained the death certificate of Emma Osmond from England, which stated that she died from "Phthisis" on 3 June 1862 at the age of 29 years (born about 1833) at Hayne Burton, Newton St. Cyres, Devon, and that she was the "Wife of John Gregory Osmond [a] Yeoman".

In September 2010, the Osmond Family Organization obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of John Gregory Osmond and Emma Norris from England, which stated that they were married by License on 15 March 1854 in the parish church of Broad Clyst, Devon, and that John Gregory Osmond was "of full age" and a Bachelor and Gentleman of Newton Saint Cyres, and that his father was Edward Osmond, a Yeoman, and that Emma Norris was "of full age" and a Spinster of Broad Clyst, and that her father was Richard Norris, a Yeoman. The marriage was witnessed by Joseph Norris, Harriett Norris, Mary Norris, Samuel Norris, Emma Osmond, Caroline Osmond, and W. R. Bishop.
In October 2009, the Osmond Family Organization obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of John Gregory Osmond and Harriet Poole from England, which stated that they were married on 2 March 1864 by Licence in the parish church of Bampton, Devon, and that John Gregory Osmond was "of full" age and a "Widower" and Gentleman of Newton St. Cyres, and that his father was Edward Osmond, a Yeoman. Inotherwords: John Gregory Osmond was first married to another woman and was a "Widower" before he married Harriet Poole (his second wife). However, as of November 28, 2009, researchers had not been able to locate the first marriage of John Gregory Osmond, and it is not (yet) listed in the online FreeBMD or Devon BMD.

The birth of Charles Osmond possibly took place in about 1870. On 2 July 1975, Miss. Roie Osmond of Auckland, New Zealand, wrote a letter to Olive Osmond of Utah, which letter stated: "My grandfather John Gregory Osmond, 1829-1888...[had a] younger son named Charles Osmond, [who] came some years later to New Zealand and saw my father [James Ingram Osmond], but returned to England and died there, date unknown. We think he would have been then about 35 years old."
