Geoffrey was a  linen webster and gave the Lythgoe charity  to the poor of his township. It was the yearly interest on £10 and  Richard Shuttleworth and John Yates were first trustees; when one died, the survivor was to elect to himself another and "soe  to continue that Course whilst yet the world shall endure." Lythgoe was a linenwebster and in September 1679, when he died there was found a quantity of finished cloth in his workshop, valued  £6 10s. He was able to leave £155 13s. 8d. Margaret the widow lived on to 1692.  Her maiden name was Yates and to  her brother Hugh she  left £5. All her estate of £112 13s. went to her  cousins William, Thomas and John  Yates. All  these Yates had borne the stigmata of Catholicism and Hugh Yates' wife was Jane. Among the possessions of Margaret  was a throne chair, a clock price 10s., a bucket and chain for the well 8s., in  the farmyard a gander and two geese and two hens."

"Yates of Bedford, 1687: Society in older Leigh was complex in its contrasts. Members of the same family were surprisingly rich, others just as desperately poor. Some of the same blood took the side of the king, others made parliament their choice. And within the very sanctum of conscience there appear in the same local groups violent differences in religion, some devout papists, others rabid ranters. Papists profiting by the economic forces of the Reformation and finding a last place to compose their peace in what a modern taste would have deemed the most detestable to accept, the chancel of the established protestant church. While unctuous puritan extremist non-conformers ask in that most solemn of all human documents, a last testament, to be forgiven for hard driving of bargains and overstraight dealing. The Yates classify themselves like the Lythgoes in this medley of contrasts, for some were catholic and some were puritan. Richard Yates who made a will in 1656 had for wife Margaret and sons Hugh and Thomas. His daughter, Margaret was married to Jeffrey Lythgoe. Richard was a weaver and small stockman; he left £44 11s. 6d. and said that as his son Thomas had once paid a debt of 20s. for him, that sum was to be set out of his share and paid separately. There were four pair of looms in his shop in the very south of the township. Hugh the son bought a house from Henry Slater, son of Sir Thomas, on 6 January 1687; the family had left Lightoaks. He made a will 10 September 1720 and died in 1724, leaving £22 14s. 4d. He left no issue and gave most of his worldly goods to his cousins, the Marshes of Tyldesley, all weavers and some to his cousin in Westleigh, Richard Birchall. The Bedford house came to cousin Timothy Aldred, son of Richard, a nailor in Atherton. Jane Speakman was to live at the house rent free for the rest of her days. After all this, he now reveals his non-conformity. He left £5 to John Risley, for the benefit of Risley chapel minister and £5 to James Wood, the preaching minister of Atherton chapel for the benefit of James Wood, his only son and heir. Among the possessions of this Yates were a pair of looms, jim wheel and gig, value 25s., an old wallet, 4d. watch 4s., red rug 10s. and a pair of swaddles."
