David Williams

Research Prior to 2008:
Parish register of Ystradgynlais. Searched at the Glamorgan Record office.
Birth Cert. of child #5 obtained from the Supt. Registrar, Swansea 4.
    1841 Census of Ystradgynlias, E.D. 13 p.14, Film 464300

Research in 2008-2010:

In the 1841 Census, David Williams is listed as being about 45 years old (born about 1796), born in Breconshire, and working as a Labourer while residing in Ystradgynlais.

In January 2009, Elinor Gilbey provided Clayton and Ethel Brough with the following information about the burial of David Williams:  "The burial of David Williams is listed in the parish register of St. Cynog in Ystradgynlais: Name: David Williams (Entry # 355); Abode: Gough's building; When buried: August 24, 1849; Age: 56 years" (born about 1793). David Williams is buried in the [St. Cynog] churchyard, but his gravestone does not survive.

In January 2009, Elinor Gilbey provided Clayton and Ethel Brough with the following information about the gravestone of Ann Rees (Watkins) Williams, wife of David Williams:  "The gravestone of Ann [Rees] Watkins Williams (1804-1843), the first wife of David Williams (1792-1849), and two of their sons and one daughter, is located in St. Cynog churchyard, Ystradgynlais, Wales.   In the late 1800's many headstones were laid flat if they were slightly unstable.  Many of these stones are still in place but covered over with grass and shrubs.  When I found Ann's grave it was 75% covered over with grass and I had to dig through the grass to be able to read it.  David remarried after the death of Ann which probably explains why they are not buried together."

Research Note, January 2009:  The Marriage Index for Ystradgynlais, Breconshire, Wales, lists a David Williams who was a Widower (and whose father was Thomas Williams) and who, on 8 April 1848, married a Sarah Williams who was a Spinster (and whose father was John Williams).

Research Note:  In July 2010, researchers found the death certificate of David Williams among a group of papers originally belonging to George and Olive Osmond of Utah (and purchased in 1955).  The death certificate of David Williams stated that he died on 24 August 1849 in Ystrad Village, Ystradgunlais, Glamorgan, Wales, at the age of 56 years old (born about 1793) from "spasmodic cholera"; that he was a "Labourer"; and that the informant of his death was "David Williams [who was] Present at the death [and of] Ystrad Village, Ystradgunlais".

Ann Rees (Watkins)

In January 2008, Elinor Gilbey provided Clayton and Ethel Brough with the following information about the gravestone of Ann Rees (Watkins) Williams, wife of David Williams:  The gravestone of Ann [Rees] Watkins Williams (1804-1843), the first wife of David Williams (1792-1849), and two of their sons and one daughter, is located in St. Cynog churchyard, Ystradgynlais, Wales.  David Williams is buried in the same churchyard, but his gravestone does not survive.  David remarried after the death of Ann which probably explains why they are not buried together.

In January 2009, Elinor Gilbey provided Clayton and Ethel Brough with addition information on the gravestone of Ann Rees (Watkins) Williams, wife of David Williams:  The exact transcript that appears on Ann Williams' headstone is as follows:
In memory of Ann wife of David Williams
late of Cefn y Coed farm in this Parish who died Jun 8th 1843 Aged 39 years
    Coffadwriaeth y cyfiawn sydd fendigedig
(Translation: The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, Pro X.7
Also David son of the above who died April 1st 1850
Also Morgan son of John and Dorothy Thomas Ystrad Village who died June 16th 1858 aged 2 years and 3 months
Also Ann daughter of the above who died August 5th 1875 Aged 14 years
Y llygad ai'n gwelodd ni'm gwel mwyach, dy lygaid sydd arnaf ac nid ydwyf
(Translation: The eye that now sees me will see me no longer; you will look for me, but I will be no more, Job VII.8)
The grandchildren are both children of Dorothy who was Ann's daughter and Elizabeth's sister.  Dorothy moved from Ystradgynlais to live in nearby Aberdare until her death.  The property named above, Cefn Y Coed, is a local farm which remains a working farm to this day.  David, Ann's husband, remarried after Ann's death which is why he is not buried [along side her].  However, local records show that he is buried in the same cemetery but his headstone does not survive.  The cemetery is at St. Cynog's Parish Church, which remains a very active place of worship to this day.  The gravestone is...by the main entrance....

In the 1841 Census, Ann (Williams) is listed as being about 35 years old (born about 1806), born in Breconshire, and residing in Ystradgynlais.

Mary Ann Gibbs

Research Notes: January 2008:

The gravestone of William Gibbs (1815-1835) is located in St. Martin’s churchyard in Laugharne, Wales.  William Gibbs was a brother to Mary Ann Gibbs (b.1812) who was the mother of John Martin Jr. (1846-1900).  John Martin Jr. immigrated to the United States in 1868, and died in Samaria, Idaho, in 1900.  Mary Ann Gibbs apparently never married John Martin Sr., but she is buried in the same churchyard as her brother, William Gibbs.  Members of the Gibbs family are buried in the same section of the churchyard but the gravestones are not all intact.

John Martin had or was married to two wives, the first being Margaret Jones and the second being Mary Ablett.  John Martin Jr. was born between these marriages to Mary Ann Gibbs.  Mary Ann Gibbs was from Laugharne and had a brother who worked in Merthyr Tydfil...which might be how she met John Martin Sr.  After having the baby Mary Ann returned to live with her parents in Laugharne and there she remained, unmarried, until her death.  She is buried in St. Martin's Church with her parents and siblings.
