Richard Allen

Research Notes Prior to 2008:
Richard ALLEN the Elder was a Maltser of Bicester, born about 1660.  He married in Bicester 3 April 1684 Anne KENSILL.  He was buried in Bicester 15 Jul 1729 and left a will dated 6 September 1729 (Oxford ser 17 pg. 269 #95077).  In his will he gives to his son Richard ALLEN his Malthouse in Bicester and other land in Caverfield.  He mentions his wife but does not name her.  He mentions his son Thomas (the direct line ancestor) and his five grandchildren, daughters of Thomas.  To Thomas he gives some land in Warwick county.  Richard also mentions his son William and forgives his cousin William ALLEN his debts.

LAST WILL and TESTAMENT of Richard Allen:
Written 1728 and probated in Sep. 1729 (Archdeaconry Court of Oxford. Series. II vol 17: folio 269 FHL#95077:

In the name of God Amen, I Richard Allen the Elder of Bissester, in the county of Oxon, Malster being in disposed in body do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following First I give and dispose to my son Richard Allen the messuage, Malthouse Garden and Orchard wherein I now dewell in Bissester aforesaid and all my lasds in Bissester fields except the Roome in my sd house called the Best Chamber with free liberty of Ingresse ...to hold to him his executors Administrators and assignmes for all the term and extate which I have therewith he and they paying there cont to my wife teh yearly sum of Six pounds quarterly  Item I give to my sd son Richard Allen and his heirs all three my grounds and free hold Lands in Caverffield in the county of Bucks which I purchased of Mr. John Wilson.  Item I give to my sd Wife also give to my Said wife all the furniture of ye sd Roome to be att her Disposage  Item I give to my son Thomas Allen his Executors admin. And assignes All those my six houses in Bisseter afforsaid in the possision of Wm Peters Woodcock, John Crick, Richard Grmsly, Wm Parker and Thomas Standbridge with the Maulthouse, barne, Close and appertains to them belonging in Bissiter a foresaid for all the Terms and Estate which I have therein and they paying there count to my sd Wife the yearly Sume of Six pounds Quaterly for her Life.  Item I give to my five grand daughters the Children of my Said Son Thomas and to ye surviors of them ye sume of two hundred pounds and the Interest there of which is due to me on a morgage of Lands In Warwickshire to be equally Devided amongst them att there Respective ages of Twenty years Item I give to my son William Allen the Sume of twelve pounds a yeare to be paid to him quarterly During his Life and it is my Will that the Same shall be a Rent Charge payable by my Said Son Richard and to be Issueing and Going oute of the Said Freehold and Leasehold Lands and presmisses in Caverffield and Bisseter to bequeathed to my son Richard as aforesaid with Liberty and power fo rmy Said Son William - to enter or Distraine forth and Same I give to the poor of Bissiter aforesaid fifty shillings to be Laid out in bread I also give to my Said Son William five pounds ....to be paid him within five weeks next after my decease.   I for give my Son Thomas the twenty pounds and all he owes me.  I also foregive my cusin William Allen all he owes me upon condition that he pays his fater ten pounds within Six Months after my decease.  Item all the Rent and my debts Legacyes and furerale expenes shall be staisfied and paid, I give devise and bequeath unto my Said Son Richard Allen his heirs Executors adminstrators and assignes, whom I make and appoint Sone Executor of this my last will and Testament &Desiring him to doe the same puntually performed.  In witness whereof I have herewith sett my hand and Sealed this Ninetheenth Day of September anno Dom. John Osmund

The christening of John Osmund is listed in the parish register of Burford (FHL Microfiche # 6142017, Part 1 of 6, Baptisms for the period 1612-1660), which states that he was christened on 14 February 1635 as "Osmund, John, s. o. John".

John Osmund's occupation was that of a "Slatter", and he was called a "jun" (or junior) in one of the christenings of his two sons.


Marriage Notes for John Osmund and Joane Wicks-545

The marriage of John Osman and Joane Wicks is listed in the parish register of Burford (FHL Microfiche # 6142017, Part 3 of 6, Marriages 1620 to 1714), which states that they were married on 15 October 1660 as "John Osman and Joane Wicks".


Edward Butler Jr.

Research Note, April 2008:  The occupation of George Osmond was a "butcher" when he died in 1754.  It is believed that he was the step-grandson of Edward Butler.  The probate index states that William Butler left a will in 1753, and that he was also a "butcher".  It is probable that George Osmond received his training as a butcher from the Butler side of the family.


Mary King

The christening of Mary King is listed in the Burford Parish Register (FHL Microfiche # 6142017), which states that she was christened on 13 March 1665 in Burford, Oxfordshire, and that her father was William King.

The marriage of George Osmun and Mary King is listed in the parish register of Burford (FHL Microfiche # 6142017, Part 3 of 6, Marriages 1620 to 1714), which states that they were married on 16 November 1691 as "George Osmun and Mary King".  Note: Mary King is the first person who married an Osmond in Bicester, Oxford, and was the first "Osmond" mentioned in Bicester with the surname of Butler.
