In the 1841 Census, Elizabeth Nichols is listed as being about 1 year old (born about 1840) and was born in Northumberland.

In the 1851 Census, Elizabeth Nichols is listed as being about 11 years old (born about 1840), born in Earsdon, Northumberland, and "at School".

The 1857 marriage certificate of "John Reed" and "Elizabeth Nichols" was obtained from England by Ethel M. Brough in 2008, and stated that they were married on 24 June 1857 in the United Session Church, Presbyterian Church of Scotland, of Waterloo, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England; and that John Reed was 20 years old (born about 1837) and a Bachelor and Coal Miner of Crofton Cowpen, and that his father was John Reed, a Butcher; and that Elizabeth Nichols was 20 years old (born about 1837) of Crofton Cowpen, and that her father was John Nichols, a Coal Miner.  The marriage was witnessed by John Nichols and Mary Elizabeth Carmichael.

In the 1861 Census, "Elizabeth Reed: is listed as being 22 years old (born about 1839), born in "East Halliwell"--or East Holywell, "Durham"--but actually Northumberland, England, married and residing with her husband, John Reed (age 24), at: Bridge End, Comforth, Durham, England.
