In the 1851 Census, John "Huton" is listed as being about 21 years old (born about 1830), born in Downs, Durham, working as a Coal Miner, and residing as an unmarried "Lodger" in the household of John and Jane Nichols in Cassop, Northumberland.

In July 2009, Ethel M. Brough obtained a copy of the marriage certificate from England for John Hutton and Mary Nichols, which stated that they were married by Banns on 7 April 1851 in the Parish Church of Kelloe, Durham, England, and that John Hutton was "of full age" and a Bachelor and "Pitman", residing at Cafsop (Cassop) Colliery, and that his father was George Hutton, a Pitman; and that Mary Nichols was "of full age" and a Spinster, residing at Cafsop (Cassop) Colliery, and that her father was John Nichols, a Pitman.  The marriage was witnessed by James Gott and John Allison.  Historical Note:  According to http://www.domaintools.com/enwikipedia/dmm.org.uk: "Cassop (formerly New Cassop) is a village in County Durham, in England. It has a population of about 500 and is located near the city of Durham. The birth and christening of "Mary Nickles" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 593802), which states that she was born on 10 January 1832 and christened on 15 April 1832 at High Street-Wesleyan, Gateshead, Durham, England, and that her parents were "John Nickles" and "Jane".  Also, the christening of "Mary Nichles" is listed in FamilySearch (via England and Wales Non-Conformist Record Indexes), which states that she was christened on 15 April 1832 in Gateshead, Durham, England, and that her parents were "John Nichles" and "Jane".  

In the 1841 Census, Mary Nichols is listed as being about 8 years old (born about 1833) and not born in Northumberland.

In the 1851 Census, Mary Nichols is listed as being about 19 years old (born about 1832), born in Heworth, Durham, and working as a "Dress maker".

James Nichols possibly died before or after the 1871 Census was taken on 2 April 1871--as his wife Ann listed herself as still "married" to him (although he's not listed with her in the census), and before 22 December 1871--when Ann's daughter, Barbara, was born but no father was listed on Barbara's birth certificate.

The birth of "Ann Tindale" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that her birth was registered in April-June 1844 in Durham district (which includes the civil parishof Pittington), Co. Durham, England, and that her mother's surname was "Smith".

In the 1871 Census, "Ann Nichols" is listed as being 27 years old (born about 1844), born in Pittington, Durham, married (although her husband is not listed with her), and residing with her son, John Nichols (age 9), in the home of her parents, John Tindale (age 53) and Margaret (age 50), at: Tudhoe Colliery, Tudhoe, Durham, England.

Brough in 2008, and stated that they were married on 24 June 1857 in the United Session Church, Presbyterian Church of Scotland, of Waterloo, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England; and that John Reed was 20 years old (born about 1837) and a Bachelor and Coal Miner of Crofton Cowpen, and that his father was John Reed, a Butcher; and that Elizabeth Nichols was 20 years old (born about 1837) of Crofton Cowpen, and that her father was John Nichols, a Coal Miner.  The marriage was witnessed by John Nichols and Mary Elizabeth Carmichael.
