John Collier

The christening of John Collier is listed in the Bishop's Transcript for Eccles (FHL Film # 1545490, Item #2), which states that he was christened on 23 September 1821 as the son of Richard and Alice Collier of Pendlebury, and that Richard was a "Weaver" in Eccles.  Note: the father of John Collier was "Richard Collier"--as identified in the following marriage certificate of John Collier: The marriage of John Collier and Lucy Lythgoe is listed in the parish records of Eccles (FHL Film # 2355824), which states that the marriage was by Banns and took place on 4 November 1849, and that John Collier was "of full age" and a Labourer of Pendlebury, and that his father was Richard Collier, a Weaver; and Lucy Lythgoe was "of full age" and a Spinster of Pendlebury, and that her father was Thomas Lythgoe, a Collier.  The marriage was witnessed by Joseph Lythgoe and Hannah Greenhalgh.

In the 1861 Census, John Collier is listed as being about 37 years old (born about 1824), born in Pendlebury, married and working as a "Coal Miner", while residing with his wife, Lucy, and their two children--Richard and Joseph--on Bolton Road in Pendlebury, Lancashire.

In the 1871 Census, John Collier is listed as being about 47 years old (born about 1824), born in Pendlebury, and working as a "Coal Miner", while residing with his wife, Lucy, and their two children--Richard and Joseph--near Bolton Road, Pendlebury, Lancashire.

In March 2013, Ethel M. Brough obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of "John Collier" and "Levina Unsworth" from England, which stated that they were married by Certificate on 15 December 1879 at the Wesleyan Chapel of Pennington, Lancashire; that John Collier was 50 years old (born about 1829), a Widower and Shopkeeper of Bolton Road, Atherton, and that his father was Richard Collier (deceased), a Carter; and that Levina Unsworth was 38 years old (born about 1841), a Spinster of Atherton Grange, Atherton, and that her father was not known or listed.  The marriage was witnessed by George Partington and Amelia Briggs.  Note: The 1879 marriage of "John Collier" and "Levina Unsworth" is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that their marriage was registered in October-December 1879 in Leigh district, Lancashire, England.  Also, the marriage of "John Collier" and "Levina Unsworth" is listed in the online Lancashire BMD, which states that their marriage was registered in 1879 in the Leigh Register Office, Lancashire, England.  In addition, this marriage is listed in the IGI (via LDS Patron submission), under the names of "John Collier" and "Lavina Unsworth".

Between 1875 and 1880, "Elder John Collier" is listed in the Pendlebury Branch records of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FHL Film # 87027, Item #19, which covers the years 1875-1888), which states that he baptized twelve individuals between 2 August 1875 and 24 October 1879, sustained or "seconded" the ordinations of several priesthood holders on 30 November 1879, and confirmed four individuals between 3 August 1875 and 28 March 1880.

In 1880, John Collier and his second wife, Lavina Unsworth, left England to briefly visit Utah. They left Pendlebury, Lancashire, sometime after 28 March 1880--when John last "confirmed" an individual as a member of the LDS
Pendlebury Branch, and then sailed from Liverpool, England, aboard the immigrant ship "Wyoming", to the United States, arriving in New York on 22 April 1880. They then apparently traveled by train to Utah, where they were "received" into the LDS Ward in Henefer, Utah, on 16 May 1880. After a brief stay in Utah, they then returned to England, where Levina gave birth to their first child, Alice Collier, on 19 December 1880 in Atherton, Lancashire, and later to a son, Richard Collier, who was born on 26 March 1882 in Atherton, Lancashire. Unfortunately, John died in 1883, and Levina in 1890, leaving the care of their two young children in the hands of Levina's aging parents and her married siblings in Tyldesley, Lancashire.

In 1880, "John Collier" and "Lavinia Collier" are listed in the "New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957" (via Ancestry.com), which states that they sailed aboard the ship "Wyoming" from Liverpool, England, to the United States--arriving in New York on 22 April 1880.  The passenger list shows John Collier as being "57" years old (born about 1827) and a "Cordwainer" (who was a shoemaker or cobbler); and Lavinia Collier as being "37" years old (born about 1843) and the "wife" of John Collier.

In 1880, "John Collier" and his second wife "Lavina" (Collier) is listed in the LDS Membership Ward Records of Henefer, Utah (FHL U.S.& Canada Film # 26007, Item #2, page 19), as being "Received" in the Ward on 16 May 1880, that they both "Left [England] with a recommend", that John Collier was from "Pendlebury, Manchester, England", and that Lavina was from "Goldesby Branch [which is difficult to read but could be 'Tyldesley' Branch--see FHL British Reference Area book: 979.2258, A3j, V.2, copy 34)], Manchester, England".

In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census (taken on or reflective of 1 June 1880), John Collier is listed as being about 53 (born about 1827), born in England, and working as a "Laborer", while residing with his second wife, Lavinia, and son, John, in Coalville, Utah.

In March 2013, Ethel M. Brough obtained a copy of the death certificate of John Collier from England, which stated that he died on 3 May 1883 at: Jane Lane, Swinton, Worsley, Lancashire; that he was a "Labourer at Coal Brow", that he died at the age of "62 years" old (born about 1821) from "Acute Bronchitis", and that the informant of his death was "Joseph Collier [his] Son [who was] present at the Death [and was of] 181 Bolton Road, Pendlebury", Lancashire.

In July 2008, Kathryn Stout, a professional genealogist in Lancashire, located the burial and gravestone of the following individuals at St. Augustine's parish church in Pendlebury, Lancashire.  The gravestone reads: "Here Resteth the Body of John Collier, who died May 4th 1883, aged 60 years.  Also Lucy wife of John Collier, who departed this life December 29 1878, aged 52 years. Also Richard son of John and Lucy Collier, who departed this life June 20th 1878, aged 21 years. Also Thomas Lythgoe, who died September 30th 1887, aged 83 years. Also, Clive, son of Robert & Dorothy Collier, died Feb 2nd 1934, aged 3 years. Also William Collier, died April 5th 1900, aged 9 months. Also Joseph Collier, died February 22nd 1918, aged 57 years."  Note:  On August 3, 2014, Alison Brough Allred personally visited St. Augustine church and phtographed the gravestone of John Collier.

Research Note:  According to a letter attributed to a family relative (living during the late 1800's and early 1900's), John Collier "was in the business of a China Ware Store" and "became very rich".  However, according to census documents, this story is not correct.

LDS Notes:  The children of John Collier and Lucy Lythgoe were "sealed to their parents" (LDS) on 14 August 1895 in the LDS Salt Lake Temple, to their parents, "John Collier" (LDS proxy: James Lythgoe) and "Lucy Lythgoe Collier".  Their sealings are listed in the "Salt Lake Temple Records, Sealings for the Dead, Children to Parents, Book B, 1895-1897" (FHL Special Collections Film # 184653, p.73) as follows:

In March 2013, Ethel M. Brough of West Jordan, Utah, obtained a copy of the death certificate of Lucy Colliler, which stated that she died of "Bronchitis 3 years [and] General Dropsy 1 month" on 29 December 1878 at: 181 Bolton Road, Pendlebury, Lancashire; that she was "52 years" old when she died (born about 1826); that she was the "Wife of John Collier a Provision Dealer"; and that the informant of her death was "John Collier, Widower of deceased in attendance [at] 181 Bolton Road, Pendlebury", Lancashire.
