Alice Harper Smith
1922 ~ 2013 CLINTON, UTAH-Our sweet little mother and grandmother, Alice Harper Smith, passed from this life on Monday, April 1, 2013. We are sure that Daddy was on the other side to welcome her home.
She was born in a four room house in Spring Lake, Utah, the 13th of 14 children on May 12, 1922 to William Tell Harper and Ellen Elizabeth Butler Harper.
She was raised on a farm and though there wasn't much money, electricity or indoor plumbing, she had a wonderful childhood. They would swim in the lake when Grandpa wasn't watching, climb in the barn and drink Grandma's mint tea and eat her wonderful home cooking. She graduated from Payson High School.
She had lots of boyfriends but her favorite was Wallace E. Smith. Wallace came home on a leave from basic training during World War II and whisked her away to Elko, Nevada on September 13, 1941. He always said that he wanted to make sure no one else married her while he was off fighting in the war. She followed him to California until he was shipped out. He had been in Hawaii for a month when word reached him that she had given birth to his baby daughter. Alice cared for that little girl alone for three years until the war ended. Alice and Wally were sealed for time and all eternity on September 12, 2000 in the Ogden Temple. Wally preceded her in death on July 18, 2011.
Alice spent time as a volunteer at several hospitals. She loved to golf and was a member of the Rose Park Ladies Golf Association. Most of her married life she was a stay at home mother, except for working a short time at Sperry International. She ended that job to care for two grandchildren. In their later years, she and Wally traveled with their good friends to Puerto Penasco, Mexico for several winters and spent much of their summers in their trailer at the Eagles Campground in Ogden Canyon. Alice and Wally have lived in many cities during their marriage including Spokane, Washington, Spanish Fork, Ogden, Roy, Bountiful, Orem and Clinton, Utah.
They were the parents of one son and two daughters, Scott H. (Karma) Smith, Erda, Diane (Glen) Willie, Plain City and Jil (Dale) Shumway, St. George. They have 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren (one on the way).
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four half sisters, Clare, Vola, Ireta, Cora and one half brother, Oran. Also, seven sisters, Virginia, Ida, Inez, Wilma, Beth and Lois, Eva and one brother, Myrl. Alice was the last of a great posterity to return home for a great family reunion.
The family would like to thank Country Pines Assisted Living and Access Hospice for their tender and loving care of our mother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy. A visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Roy City Cemetery.
