Death Takes Transplant Patient, 40

NORTH OGDEN, UT., - A 40-year old man who underwent a kidney transplant almost three years ago died Monday.

Carl Dee Josephson of 469 E. 2100 N. died in McKay Hospital after a long illness.

In early January 1967, Mr. Josephson received a kidney from a cousin during a surgical procedure at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

Doctors at the time described it as the most successful of six transplants that had been performed at the center. The donor was Dr. Reed Mackley, a North Ogden dentist and LDS Bishop.

Mr. Josephson was born July 22, 1929, in Driggs, Idaho, a son of Carl O. and Eva Mackley Josephson. On September 15, 1948, he was married to Donna Earlene Kempton in the Salt lake LDS Temple.

Former Butcher

He had been employed as an accountant and formerly worked as a butcher in a North Ogden food market.

He was a member of the North Ogden 4th LDS Ward and had served as a counselor in the Ben Lomond Stake MIA Superintendency, as superintendent of the MIA in the North Ogden 1st Ward, and had also been active as a high priest, home teacher and teacher's quorum advisor.

He lived in Driggs, Idaho, prior to moving to North Ogden 12 years ago.

Surviving are his widow, two sons and three daughters, Gary Dee Josephson, Kevin E. Josephson, Sharon Ann Josephson, Deanna Josephson, all of North Ogden; Mrs. Don (Karla Rae) Tucker, Pleasant View; his mother, Mrs. Elmo Gee, Driggs, Idaho.

Other Survivors

Also surviving are one grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Don (Darlene) Casper, Pocatello, Idaho; Mrs. Wendell (Aloma) Campbell, Driggs; Mrs. Donna Mae Richens, Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the North Ogden 4th Ward Chapel, 670 E. 2011 N., with Bishop J. Reed Mackley officiating.

Friends may call at the Myers Mortuary tonight from 7 to 9 and at the ward chapel Wednesday one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the North Ogden Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions to the Kidney Disease Research Group of the University of Utah Hospital, Salt Lake City, in lieu of flowers.
