OBIT: Times-News, The (Twin Falls, ID) - Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Merle Mackley Bateman

RUPERT - Merle Mackley Bateman, our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend departed this life to join her family and friends in a joyous reunion on Monday, June 8, 2009. She died quietly in her home surrounded by her family, who wished her a sad farewell.

Nilace and Jesse Perry were excited to welcome Merle Rada into their home on Oct. 14, 1927. Merle was to be joined by nine other brothers and sisters over the years, and in spite of the Depression, they all grew up having their needs met and knowing that they were loved. During the growing up years, the family lived in Heyburn and Rupert.

Merle and her younger sisters truly enjoyed following their dad around their farm. They helped with feeding the cows, riding the cultivator and swimming in the big ditch. Life was good for a little girl, so it came as quite a shock to her when she found out that she would have to retire her bib overalls and put on a dress, shoes and stockings just to attend school in Heyburn.

In August of 1945, Merle was introduced to a young soldier by the name of Franklin Oliver Mackley. After their courtship, they were married in the Logan Temple on Oct. 25, 1945. They made their home in Rupert. This happy couple was joined by a daughter and two sons.

Merle held many callings in the various LDS wards she lived in. She followed many Scout boys on their five-mile hikes. She served in several Primary and Relief Society presidencies, as well as teaching many classes. The thing that she enjoyed the most was serving other people.

Frank preceded her in death, and then she married Paul Bateman. They lived in Rupert for a while and then they moved to Vale, Ore., where Merle lovingly cared for her Aunt Jenny and Uncle Jasper until their deaths. The family finally convinced them to move back to Rupert, where they resided until their deaths.

Merle was preceded in death by her eternal companion, Franklin Oliver Mackley; husband, Paul Bateman; her parents, Jesse and Nilace Perry; sister, Shirley Merrill; and brother, Dean Perry.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Wayne) Short of Rupert; sons, David (Georgia) Mackley of Star and Ralph (Deana) Mackley of Rupert; sisters, Bobbie Darlene Johnson, Melba Hanks, Hazel Lewis and Sharon Tracy; brothers, Jay Perry, Lester Perry and Leonard Perry; and Paul's daughter, Joanne. Memories of Merle will be cherished by 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by all who met her and her legacy of love and service will live on for the eternities.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Hansen Mortuary, 710 Sixth St. in Rupert, with Bishop Bob Trevino officiating. Burial will follow at the Rupert Cemetery.

A viewing for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 12, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the
