Mary Lunette Black

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Lunette Black Lowry passed away February 1, 1990, in Tooele, Utah.
   She was born January 21, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Wilford Rex Black, Sr., and Elsie Isabelle Manning. She married Abner[0] Burton Lowry[0] on October 14, 1939, in Salt Lake City. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a talented homemaker and a friend to all she knew. She worked at the lunchroom at Tooele High School for a number of years. She retired from Tooele Army Depot.She was a member of the LDS Church, and had been Relief Society president, ward librarian, and had held various teaching positions. She and her husband served a mission in the Georgia-Atlanta Mission.
   She is survived by: Her husband, Abner[0] Burton Lowry[0], and sons and daughter and their mates, W. Kent and Gaye, B. Wayne and Verneal, D. Fred and Karla, and Anne and J. Craig Wexels; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Wilford Rex, Jr., Keith, Thomas, Gerald and Patricia, all of Salt Lake City; Hal, of Yuma, Arizona, and Dean, of Alta Loma, California. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Lois Kaye.
   Funeral services will be held February 5, 1990, at the Tooele North Stake Center, 583 North 270 East, at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held Sunday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Tate Mortuary in Tooele, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Interment, Tooele City Cemetery.


Mary Leon Rivers

BIOGRAPHY: She loved gardening and was a member of the Morman Church.  Survivors include children Jim Marker of Craig, Alaska, Fred Marker of Danville, California,  Betty Marker Buell of Umatilla -  brothers Ray (Roy) Rivers and Carlos Rivers of Emmett, Idaho, George Rivers and Williams C. Rivers of Meridian, Idaho - and step children, Ron Williams of Hermiston, Joyce Follis of Pendleton, Jeannie Bloodsworth of Hermiston, Rosalie Trembeth of Gresham and Betty Sharp of Manmouth.

BURIAL: She was buried in the Hermiston Cemetery.

Tyler Kirk Merriam

Tyler Kirk Merriam

Las Vegas, NV., - Tyler Kirk Merriam departed this earth on November 26, 2013. We will miss his vibrant smile and the way he brought happiness to those around him.

He was born March 16, 1984 to Burdell and Marsha Merriam.

Tyler spent most of his childhood in Cedar City Utah with his brothers Cache (Ember) and Mathew (Jennifer.)

As an adult he chose to make Las Vegas Nevada his home. It was in Las Vegas that he met his wife Lacey and had his two beautiful daughters, Analeigh and Juliette. He loved being a husband and father and devoted his time to his girls.

He will be missed and always loved. Tyler is preceded in death by his father, Burdell.

George Albert Smith

DEATH: Age 58 years old


Leonard R. Braithwaite

In 1929 he was single living Spanish Fork.  Leonard was working for Pacific States Pipe Mill in 1935, 1939 living at 1900 W Center Box 78, Provo.  In 1941 he was working at the pipe mill but was living at 1940 W Center Box 79A.  In 1944, 1946 he was machinist at the US Steel at Geneva and living at 1940 W Center, Provo.  All of the above according to Pope's Provo Directory.


Violet Naomi Cox

According to Pope's Provo Directory in 1929 she worked just the summer months at the Pacific Coast Canneries and lived with her parents Walter and Mary at 1880 W Center(now it 2050 West Center).  The house I was born in 1810 West Center was vacant that year (later it was 1910 W. Center.  Now it is gone(1999).   Smith's Food and Drug was supposed to have built 12 acre complex but there is only 12 acres of weeds as February 2003.

Claude Hinckley was listed as the occupant on 1820 W Center in 1930.  There was a service station at the corner 1880 W Center(2050 W Center).

BIOGRAPHY: Our wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Violet Naomi Cox Braithwaite, died of natural causes July 1, 2000.
  Born Oct. 28, 1910, a daughter of Walter and Mary Ellen Cox, West Provo ("Fort Field"). After graduating from Provo High School she completed her bachelors degree in music at the McCune School of Music in Salt Lake City through the University of Utah.
  For many years she played the organ in Pioneer and Sunset LDS Wards and taught private piano lessons to young and old alike. She enjoyed various callings in the LDS church. Her faith and zeal in the gospel were very strong. Many were affected by her devotion in doing good to the "down trodden" and fellow co-workers. Her great joy in life was her eternal family.
  She married Leonard R Braithwaite in the Salt Lake LDS Temple April 21, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1994. They had five children, Dale, Lee, Ruthmary, Kathleen and Rosemarie. Their grandchildren number 30, and the great-grandchildren number 66, all of whom survive her.
  Service will be 11 a.m. Thurs. July 6, at the Pleasant View 8th Ward LDS Chapel, 1060 E. 2400 N., Provo. Friends may call 6-7 p.m. Wed. at Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 E. Center Street and at the Chapel, one hour prior to the service.
Interment, Provo City Cemetery.


Walter Cox

Walter was listed as farmer 1917 residing on the North side of West Center three fourths of a mile West of the rail road tracks. Again he was listed in 1920 and 1922 as a farmer residing on north side of West Center 0ne-half of a mile West of the rail road tracks.  In 1926 he had  five acres with an assessed value of $400 in Provo probably located West of Geneva Road and just South of the Provo River.   In 1929 Walter was listed as a farmer residing in a  house at 1880 W Center, Provo, all this according to Polk's Provo Directories.  At this same address of all places listed above there was a service station on the corner called the West Drive Service run  by Elwood B. Carter, later by Bryan Cox and then Leonard Braithwaite.


Mary Ellen Jane Stevenson

Mary Ellen was baptized by Marion Tanner and confirmed by David Holdaway on the 20th of August 1876.

She inherited 10 acres of land from her parents assessed value was $1010 according to Polk's Provo City Directory of 1917.


Ruth Cox

Lily Ruth Cox
 Lily Ruth Cox, 92, of 830 East Walnut Ave. Provo, died Thursday,,, May 14, 1981 at Phillips Nursing Home in Provo.
 She was born Feb. 27, 1889 in Provo, a daughter of Walter and Mary Ellen Stevenson Cox.
 She moved to Park City as a child but then returned to Provo and attended Brigham Young University.  She began her long teaching career at the age of 17 in Sterling, Sanpete County.  She later taught in Salt Lake County then earned her degree from BYU and taught in South Bountiful School.
 Later she taught in Ogden and retired from that school district.  She was
a poet and produced many plays and musicals.
 Survivors include two brothers and one sister, Jesse Cox, Helper, Albert Cox, Chula Vista, Calif. and Mrs Leonard (Violet) Braithwaite, Provo City, Cemetery where friends may meet.  Services will be conducted under the direction of Berg Mortuary.

Floyd Herschel Coles

Floyd Herschel Coles (1936 - 2013)

CEDAR CITY, UT - Floyd Herschel Coles, age 77, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2013.

Floyd was born in Blackfoot, ID on April 22, 1936 to Herschel and Ada Coles. He served a 2½ year mission in Stockholm, Sweden and upon his return married Ruthmary Braithwaite on June 26, 1959 in the Manti Temple.

Floyd served in the Air National Guard stationed in Oahu, HI as a 2nd class airman. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served in various callings including: Scout Master, Bishop, Bishopric Counselor, High Counselor and in the Young Men's Program. Floyd and Ruthmary also served an LDS mission in Elberta, UT on the Church Farm. Floyd spent his early growing up years in Blackfoot, ID and during his elementary school years his family moved to Provo, UT. A few years later they moved to Payson, UT where Floyd continued his life and while living there he would spend summers working on his uncle Marvin's farm in Blackfoot, ID. A little known fact about Floyd is that he played the saxophone in the dance band while in high school. During these years, his love of hunting and fishing began as he often hunted ducks before or after school. He graduated from Payson High School in 1954 and then from BYU with Master's degree in Biological Science.

Floyd loved the outdoors and loved teaching individuals to hunt or fish. As a biologist for the State of Utah, he introduced Rio Grande turkeys to the southern region. He loved to hunt turkeys and had a passion to create handmade box turkey calls. He shared his love for the outdoors with his family through his efforts of Dutch Oven Cooking, fishing, hunting, and camping.

He is survived by his wife Ruthmary of Cedar City, two sons, David (Kallie) Coles, Kenneth (Traci) Coles, one daughter, Mary (Paul) Cozzens, 10 grandchildren, and three sisters, Loa Jean Geltz, Louise Horton, and Marjorie Trimble.

Services are Thursday, January 2, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cedar City 1st Ward (Rock Church). Viewings will be on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary ( 190 North 300 West, Cedar City, UT). Interment will be at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.


Ruthmary Braithwaite

Ruthmary B. Coles

Cedar City, Utah

Ruthmary Braithwaite Coles, age 76, passed away on May 11, 2015. Ruthmary was born in Provo, UT on June 26, 1938 to Leonard and Violet Braithwaite. She married Floyd Coles on June 26, 1959 in the Manti Temple.

Ruthmary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings including: Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society Presidency, Primary Teacher and much more. Ruthmary and Floyd also served an LDS mission in Elberta, UT on the Church Farm.

Ruthmary spent her childhood in Provo, UT attending school, from elementary through college. She was an active member of 4H and winner of blue ribbons on a regular basis. During this time she also learned her love for sewing and crafting. She earned the Utah Wool Growers Association award for sewing her wool suit and entered it into the State Fair. A little known fact about Ruthmary is that she played the accordion. She graduated from Provo High School and then from BYU with and Bachelors of Science.

Upon graduation from college Ruthmary began her teaching career in Home Economics at the Junior High School. In 1970 Ruthmary and Floyd moved from the Salt Lake City area to Cedar City and purchased a home on the East side of town. Here she continued her love for sewing and teaching anyone willing to learn. Ruthmary loved serving others. She taught cooking classes at the adult high school in Cedar City for a couple of years. Each year at election time she volunteered her services as an election judge.

She is survived by three children, David (Kallie) Coles, Mary (Paul) Cozzens, Kenneth (Traci) Coles, 10 grandchildren, one brother, Lee Braithwaite, and one sister, Rosemarie Smith.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar City 1st Ward (Rock Church). Viewings will be on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May, 20 2015 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 North 300 West, Cedar City, UT). Interment will be at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary
