Probers Blame Stalling In Ephraim Air Crash

EPHRAIM - A stall in a strong wind was listed as the cause of a fatal airplane crash Wednesday near the Ephraim-Manti Airport which claimed the lives of a former Utah couple and their two children.

Investigators from the State Aeronautics Commission, Federal Aviation Agency and the Civil Aeronautices Board probed the wreckage Thursday of the charred single engine plane that burst into fllames just short of the runway.

"The plane's inverted position indicated that it had stalled, probably while turning in strong winds," Harlon W. Bement, state aeronautics director, said.

Family On Visit

Killed in the fiery crash were Raymond Clifford Bradley, 35, Battle Mountain, Neveda; his wife, Shelleth RaNae Larson Bradley, 33, and their children, Scott Raymond, 8, and Peggy Ann, 5.

The Bradleys were on their way to visit their respective families in Ephraim and Moroni where they formerly lived.

They were preparing to land at the Manti-Ephraim Airport at the time of the accident. They had circled Ephraim twice to inform relatives of their imminent arrival at the airport and were apparently making the final turn preparatory to touching down on the runway when the plane crashed in an alfalfa field owned by Robert O. Anderson, Ephraim, flipped over and burned.

Daughter Survives

The couple is survived by another daughter, Rebecca, 12, who did not accompany the family on the Wednesday flight from Nevada to Sanpete County.

She will reside temporarily with Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Larson, parents of her mother.
