Rowland Braithwaite

"Rowland Braithwaite" is listed in the Will of his father as follows: The "Will" of Rowland Braithwaite, dated 11 November 1700, begins as follows: "I [,] Rowland Braithwaite of Pall in the Bray havick(?) of Hawkshead in the county of Lancaster, yea. being in health and perfect memory yet considering uncertainty of this mortal life and having a mind to settle the small Estate, I [,] Rowland soon proceed to make this my last will and testament ..."  Rowland Braithwaite then subsequently names the following individuals in his Will: 1) "James Braithwaite younger of Loughrigg"; 2) "Eldest son, Thomas Braithwaite"; 3) "My wife and my six younger children viz Rowland, Robert, Cathrin, Margaret, Elizabeth and Esther"; and 4) "My said Wife Agnes sole executor of this my will".

The burial of "Rowland Brathwt" is listed in the parish register of Hawkshead, Lancashire (FHL Film # 1040305), which states that he was buried on 30 August 1733 and that he was of "Coppersgate".

"Rowland Braithwaite"--also known as "Rowland Brathwayte" and "Rowland Brathwait"--is listed in the christening records of his children as being of "Rydal" between 1710 and 1720, as follows:
1) The christening of "Rowland Brathwayte" is listed in the Bishop's Transcripts for Grasmere, Westmoreland (FHL Film # 97368), which states that he was christened on 8 October 1710 as "Rowland son of Rowland Brathwayte of Rydall".  Also, the christening of "Rowland Braithwayt" is listed in a transcript of Grasmere (FHL Book: Q942.88/G1.V26nor, p.27), which states that he was christened on 8 October 1710 in Grasmere and that his father, Rowland Braithwayt, was of "Rydall".
2) The christening of "John Brathwaite" is listed in FamilySeach (via FHL Film # 97368), which states that he was christened on 30 March 1711 in Grasmere, Westmorland, and that his father was Rowland Brathwaite.  Also, the christening of "John Braithwaite" is listed in a transcript of Grasmere (FHL Book: Q942.88/G1.V26nor, p.29), which states that he was christened on 30 March 1711/1712 in Grasmere and that his father, Rowland Braithwaite, was of "Rydall".
3) The christening of "Agnes Brathwait" is listed in FamilySeach (via FHL Film # 97368), which states that she was christened on 18 June 1714 in Grasmere, Westmorland, and that her father was Rowland Brathwait.  Also, the christening of "Agnes Brathwait" is listed in a transcript of Grasmere (FHL Book: Q942.88/G1.V26nor, p.32), which states that she was christened on 18 June 1714 in Grasmere and that her father, Rowland Brathwait, was of "Rydal".
4) The christening of "Robert Brathwait" is listed in FamilySeach (via FHL Film # 97368), which states that he was christened on 7 June 1716 in Grasmere, Westmorland, and that his father was Rowland Brathwait.  Also, the christening of "Robt Brathwait" is listed in a transcript of Grasmere (FHL Book: Q942.88/G1.V26nor, p.35), which states that he was christened on 7 June 1716 in Grasmere and that his father, Rowland Brathwait, was of "Rydal".
5) The christening of "William Brathwait" is listed in FamilySeach (via FHL Film # 97368), which states that he was christened on 8 December 1720 in Grasmere, Westmorland, and that his father was Rowland Brathwait.  Also, the christening of "Wm Brathwait" is listed in a transcript of Grasmere (FHL Book: Q942.88/G1.V26nor, p.43), which states that he was christened on 8 December 1720 in Grasmere and that his father, Rowland Brathwait, was of "Rydal".

Research Note:  In the past, some individuals have suggested that the marriage of "Rowland Braithwaite" (born about 1675) may have been to an "Ann Porter" in 1710.  However, this appears unlikely, as the licence for this actual marriage was issued by the Faculty Office of London, England, on 21 August 1710 (FHL Film # 355463), and states the following: "...Rowland Brathwaite of the parish of St. Clement Danes in the County of Middlsx [Middlesex, a] Bachelor aged 24 years [born about 1686] and alleged that he intendeth to marry with Ann Porter of the same parish [a] Spinster ab[ou]t 17 years [born about 1693] with the Consent of Elizabeth Porter her natural and lawful mother...."

Research Note:  In the past, some individuals have suggested that the "Rowland Braithwaite" (born about 1675) who had childfren christened in Grasmere between 1710 and 1720 may have been the same "Rowland Braithwaite" who married "Alicia Alithorne" in 1699 in Beetham and had children in Beetham between 1702 and 1703.  However, this appears unlikely, as the Rowland Braithwaite who had children christened in Beetham was "of Farleton" (according to the 1702 christening record of his son Rowlandus Brathwhaite)--and Farleton is about 25 travel miles southeast of Grasmere.  Also, Alicia Alithorne, who married Rowland Braithwaite in 1699 in Beetham, was a "widow of Farleton" and buried in Beetham in 1727.

Mrs. Rowland Braithwaite

Grasmere. Bndsmn. [Bondsman]: John Lancaster of Ambleside, yeom. At p. church of Windermere or parochial chapel of Troutbeck. Witn.: Wm. Dobson and Thos. Knott."

The possible relationship between Rowland Braithwaite who was born about 1709 and was of Grasmere, and William Brathwaite who was born about 1670 and who was married in Grasmere in 1695, is based on radius searches, known migrations, and family patronymics.  For example, Rowland Braithwaite of Grasmere, named his first son, William, and it is possible he named his son after his father.
