Theron Rex Jolley

NEWS ARTICLE: The Deseret News, Thursday, 5 APR 2001

Business Leader, Theron Jolley Dies

He worked for Allied Stores for almost 40 years.

Theron Rex Jolley, a longtime business leader with Allied Development Inc. and Allied Christmas Trees, died Tuesday from a heart attack. He was 72.

Jolley started work at Allied War Surplus, 6400 S. State, in 1953. He managed the shoe department and helped start the store's sporting goods section.

He worked his way up through the company, eventually becoming vice president of Allied Development Inc. and owner of Allied Christmas Trees, which had 50 locations in several Western states.

Jolley was one of three owners of Allied Development, joining Roland Davis and Tom Cowley. He retired from the company in 1992.

Allied was famous throughout Utah as a place to get hard-to-find or unusual items. For many years, drivers along State Street could easily locate the store because of the surplus military training airplane placed outside.

Allied was founded in 1946 in downtown Salt Lake City and originally sold war-surplus items.
The owners then bought the Gillen Brothers Livery and Feed, a livery stable in southern Salt Lake County where people would leave their horses to ride the streetcar into Salt Lake City.

The company built a new 15,000-square-foot store in 1955 over the remodeled livery stable, which was removed. The business had one location for many years but grew to five by the mid-1980s.
Jolley was born March 20, 1929, in Park City.

He graduated from Park City High School in 1948 and continued his education with a scholarship in art and sports at the University of Utah and the University of California.

He married Joyce LaRue Saville in 1950.

From 1951 to 1953, Jolley served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War and was a member of the U.S. Army Ski Team.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Willow Canyon 4th Ward. Visitation is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State. Interment will be at Crescent Cemetery.
