DIVORCE: The Deseret Evening News (Salt Lake City, UT), 3 APR 1903, pg: 7

Fourth District Court

A divorce was granted John Braithwaite of Spanish Fork, from Ella Braithwaite yesterday in the Fourth District Court on the grounds of desertion. The parties were married March 10, 1902, and on the 11th defendant left plaintiff and has since refused to return. It is understood that Mr. and Mrs. Braithwaite were distantly related by consanguinity although not within the prohibited degree, and that relatives of Mrs. Braithwaite persuaded her that it was wrong for her to marry Mr. Braithwaite and that this is the cause of the separation. The Bemus family is the connection.

BIOGRAPHY: From Dedrickson Family website:   George BRAITHWAITE [Parents] was born 5 Mar 1834 in Kirkland, Kendal, Westmoreland, England. He died 10 Nov 1898 in Manti, Sanpete, Ut and was buried 14 Nov 1898 in Manti, Sanpete, Ut. George married Sarah Sariah JOHNSTON on 4 Dec 1864 in Manti, Sanpete, Ut.
From Sarah DeYoung Saunders Wagner, granddaughter:
As a boy George learned the trade of shoemaking, also that of gardening.  Although he brought his shoemaking tools with him to America, he did not work at this trade except for members of his family.
George sang a great deal and was always so happy and full of fun.  He was chosen to sing as one of the 400 voices at the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple.  He also sang for 20 years with the Manti Tabernacle Choir.  He and his brothers also sang at parties, in church, and at weddings and funerals.
When they married they rented a two-room house of adobe.  Next he built a one-room dugout, the same as the pioneers were building as they settled Manti.  The walls were made of rock and lime plaster.  A pole roof with willows over the poles and about two feet of dirt on top served both as ceiling and roof.  There was a rock fireplace with an iron rod for cooking and heating.  A three-legged pot and a dutch oven were used for cooking and baking.  When the fire went out, they borrowed a start from one of the neighbors.  Later, just east of the dugout, George built a two-room adobe house.  They had a quarter of a city block and on it were their corrals, haystacks, a large family garden, fruit trees, and two long sheds.  In these sheds he kept bees (about eighty hives).  He sold honey and wax from these bees.
They kept the winter supply of wood in the street until the city made the people move it on to their property.  He also had a farm on the outskirts of the town but it was planted into meadow hay for hay.
The next house he built was made of rock and adobe & was built right over the dugout, which was used as a basement.  This house had two large rooms downstairs & two large rooms upstairs.  The bottom outside walls were made of rock and the top floor walls were made of adobe.  There was an attic over the adobe part.  This house has been remodeled and is still in use today.
George had 13 acres of wild hay.  In addition, he had two fields of lucerne.  He raised bees and also worked for nine years constructing the Manti Temple and terraces.  He also was employed as Manti City sexton until his death.  His son George finished his unexpired term.  He helped build the city courthouse, Manti Tabernacle and the city hall.  Later he worked in the Manti Co-op or ZCMI.  He also was the clerk in the tithing office for twenty years.
George received a bronze medal & a small pension for his part in the Black Hawk War.
George was a High Priest in the L.D.S. Church at the time of his death.

George married Sarah Sariah Johnston.  She had come to Utah with the Edward Hunter Company.  This was a handcart company.  There were sent with Captain Morley to settle Manti.  She grew up in Manti, Utah.

Braithwaite Was Lover Of Education

George R. Braithwaite first saw the light at Manti, Utah, November 6, 1867 and died at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake November 5, 19125. He passed to the great beyond on the eve of his fifty-eighth birthday. His death was sudden and unexpected and came as a shock to his family and many friends.

He was born of English parentage on his father's side. His father's family came from England to America and endured the trials and hardships of pioneer life in Utah in the early fifties. He belongs to a family of seven healthy, robust brothers and three fine sisters. He being the oldest he showed unusual affection and thought in helping his parents raise their children up thru the growing years.

His earliest school days were spent in private schools, as they were styled then of old fashioned schools of one room, which were taught by the best chosen teachers of that time. As a boy he will be well remembered by his fellos students for his fondness of books, keen wit and kindly nature.

It sometimes became necessary for him to leave school for a time to assist his parents in obtaining a living for their large family of children. While he regretted this absence from school it did not detract from his growing desire for advancement in education.

When about seventeen, he entered the Presbyterain day school, taught by Miss Galbraith, a teacher of ability, character and fine personality, who became devoted to him, because of his determination in opposing difficulties. His new found teacher did much towards influencing him in the later years of educational life.

Upon leaving grammer school at Manti, he completed his High School course in the Collegiate Institute of Salt Lake, graduating with honor. From this school he entered Knox College at Galesburg, Illinois, where he did three full years of college work. He then returned west and engaged in the profession of teaching. He followed this vocation for a few years, but was not satisfied to continue without his Bachelor's Degree. He therefore entered the Agricultural College of Utah, and graduated with the satisfaction of having completed his college course.

He now turned his attention in all earnestness to teaching, serving as principal of public schools in various places in Utah and Idaho. As a teacher he showed tact, initiative, excellent discipline and a kindly personality that won the whole hearted esteem of his students.

In life, he was affectionately to his parents, his brothers and sisters, to his good family and his many friends. In ideals and conviction of purpose he was even faithful and true to the best he knew and faced life's challenge with determination to win success. He bore the deep and hidden things of the son's struggle, things which every man has to bear, with wonderful patience and charity for all.

As a student he excelled in history, mathematics and literature. He was very clever in telling a good story and enjoyed it so thoroughly that he could weave common experiences into delightful stories.

When he was principal of the Sterling School, Mr. Braithwaite boarded in the home of mrs. Dessie Thompson. While there a friendship between himself and Miss Ellen Peacock resulted in their marriage. Two children have been born unto them, the first a boy who died in infancy, the second a girl, who has continued to fill their lives with happiness.

His life and vocational service stands out before all who know him and is worthy of our interest and esteem. His influence as a friend and teacher, husband and father, live on tho he himself has ceased from earthly care and toil.
