Rex Soren Nielson

DEATH: Our dad, Rex Soren Nielson is flying high once again after leaving this world on April 3, 2008 at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home. He was born to Clara Braithwaite and Soren Nielson on May 18, 1924 in Salt Lake City Utah. He was the 4th of 5 children. He grew up in Duchesne Utah and Salt Lake City. He attended South High School, and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Industrial Management. He married Virginia Owen, on August 31, 1951, and together raised four children, Bev, Julie, Mark, and Craig. Our mother passed away July 27, 1987. He later married Nancy Hanseen and they spent their years together in Silver Reef Utah. They later divorced.
Rex had a very adventurous, sometimes dangerous life. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Force as a B-24 bomber pilot in World War II, where he completed numerous successful missions against the Japanese Empire; seeing first hand the devastating effects of war. He always had great war stories to tell, almost to the very end of his life. He later chose law enforcement as his career, landing him a job as a pilot for the Utah Highway Patrol. He was the "Bear in the Air", flying traffic details, shuttling emergency blood supplies across the region, and participating in many searches.
Throughout his 28 years on the force he helped save many lives, and forged many lifelong friendships. Anyone who ever flew with Rex, knew they were in safe hands. After his retirement, then Utah Governor Calvin Rampton, whom had flown with Rex on many occasion, trusted him further by offering him a job co-piloting the State's King Air, the official transport of the Governor‘s office.
Rex had a deep love and respect for nature. He went on countless camping, hiking, and motorcycle trips throughout his life. He found beauty in everything, even in an old broken down barn...Rex was never afraid of dying and believed in living life to the fullest. Quality was always on his mind with every project he accomplished, from building the house we grew up in, to constructing his model train set. He helped build a model of the historic mining town of Silver Reef Utah, and his work sits proudly on display in the Wells Fargo Museum.
Rex is survived by his daughters, Bev Graham (Mike), Julie Harris (Mike), sons, Mark and Craig, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one on the way, and his sweet little dog Pippi. His parents and all of his siblings preceded him in death. The family sends a special thank you to the SNU staff, at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home.
Please join us to informally celebrate the life of this great man, Tuesday evening, April 8th from 6-8 PM, at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary: 2350 E. 1300 South, Salt Lake City. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday April 9, 2008 also at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary.
Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in SLC.
REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.
