OBIT: The Manti Messenger, 20 JAN 1911

Caroline Kenner

Caroline Schneebh Kenner, who departed from this life January 8, 1911, was a native of Wadensweil, Ct, Zurich, Switzerland, where she was born September 9, 1838.

She had grown to womanhood before the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reached her through its missionaries, became an early convert, and at the first available opportunity joined a company of Saints, bound for Utah. Of her it can be said that she literally forsook family and friends for the Gospel's sake, and is entitled to the rich reward promised to all who make such sacrifices for that reason.

Sister Kenner reached Salt Lake City in 1860, and soon after became a member of the household of Judge Elias Smith, to whom she became very much attached and who likewise had a high regard for her. Here she remained until her marriage to Foster Ray Kenner February 28, 1863. They removed to Manti City, Utah in 1865. This became their permanent home and where six children were born to them, namely: Beauregard, Emily, Marietta, R. F. Lee, Bertha and Elizabeth Josephine, of these children two have passed away, Marietta September 8, 1874; Elizabeth Josephine, September 12, 1895. The others with, nineteen grandchildren survive.

Her husband passed away in this city May 27, 1892. He was one of the most popular men that ever lived in any community, being respected by all who knew him, without regard to difference of opinion.

Sister Kenner was fairly educated as her countrymen generally are, and took a keen interest in all matters affecting public welfare at home or abroad. While inheriting from the soil of her native land a disposition to revolt at tyranny or injustice, she nevertheless was generous in her impulses and charitable to those in need.

While speaking and fully conversant with the German and French language, she was a stranger to English, except in a fragmentary way, until she came to this country, when she picked up our tongue with remarkable facility.

Having fully answered the measure of her calling upon the earth and with a life drawn out much beyond the allotted span, she has passed along to "The much better land where the righteous reside."

The family through this paper desire to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to all kind friends for the generous assistance rendered their Mother during her last illness.
