Bulldozer Crushes Operator
Riley O. Barnson
HOLLADAY, UT., - A 63 year old Salt Lake County employee was killed instantly Monday about 9:30 a.m. when he was crushed between a bulldozer he was operating and a bridge at approximately 4860 Highland Dr.
Dead on arrival at Salt Lake General Hospital was Riley O. Barnson, 5511 South 4220 West, Kearns, an employee of the Salt Lake County Roads and Bridges Department.
Mr. Barnson was operating the bulldozer to clear gravel and rocks from under the bridge in Big Cottonwood stream. He was smashed between the top of the bulldozer and a large concrete supporting beam of the bridge, said Deputy Sheriff Robert Sundquist.
The officer said Mr. Barnson was clearing gravel from under the bride to shore up the stream bank where it turns to go under the bridge. William M. Kasworm, county flood control supervisor, was supervising the job. The victim crouched down to go under two beams and apparently he rose up as the bulldozer approached the third. He was crushed between the beam and the bulldozer's fuel tank and was knocked into about three feet of water, Deputy Sundquist said.
Floyd Tapp, 49, 6390 S. 1300 East, Mr. Barnson's assistant jumped into the water and pulled the victim out, and Mr. Kasworm stopped the machine, Deputy Sundquist said.
Mr. Barnson was born in Junction, Piute County, September 13, 1898, to Bernard and Elizabeth Braithwaite Barnson. He attended schools in that community and was a heavy equipment operator all his life.
For 20 years he raced horses in Utah and Nevada, winning several of the larger races in the two states.
He married Nellie Elder in 1919. She died in 1927. He then married Norma Spencer in Junction, December 20, 1928. The marriage later was solemnized in the Manti Temple, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He has been employed by the Salt Lake County Roads and Bridges Department for seven years.
Survivors include his widow and seven sons and daughters, Mrs. Marion (Irene) Ackerman, Marysvale; Mrs. Kenyon (Elaine) Riddle, Low; Mrs. Todd (Ann) Riddle, Salt Lake City; and Garn, LaNell, Audrey and Billie Dean Barnson, Kearns; two brothers, Roland and Chris, Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Rudd, McGill, Nevada; Mrs. Henry (Lora) Beebe, T
