Wallace Elwood Smith 1919 ~ 2011

ROY - Wallace Elwood Smith, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle, passed into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on Monday, July 18, 2011. He fought the good fight and worked hard for his family his entire life.

Daddy was born in Union, Utah on January 25, 1919 to Albert Elwood and Martha Jeanette Cox Smith. He was the son of a carpenter. He was a youth during the Great Depression and the family had very little money. Because of this, he learned valuable lessons of "making do or do without". He was always able to make wonderful things out of almost nothing. He loved to tinker and fix things. He was famous for the hanging tractors that he fashioned from pop cans that were given to any child, or adult that wanted one.

He attended school in Spanish Fork, Utah and graduated from Spanish Fork High School. He fought for the freedoms of America in World War II by joining the Army along with his two brothers in 1941. Most of that time he was stationed in the Philippines. During the war he served very competently. He received an honorable discharge after five years.

He married our mother, Alice Harper on September 13, 1941 in Elko, Nevada. They were sealed in the Ogden, Utah Temple on September 13, 2000 on their 59th anniversary.

After the war Wally picked up his tools and learned the sheet metal trade. He joined sheet metal workers Local 312 where he served as vice president and president as well as apprenticeship instructor at night. In 1962 he became a Field Representative for the U.S. Department of Labor in the Bureau of Apprenticeship Training. He was called a "Bat Man". He traveled many miles from Washington State to Utah, helping many young men become apprenticed in various trades. He was a dedicated member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He and Mom enjoyed many happy times in their trailer at the Eagles Camp ground in Ogden Canyon. They met many good friends there.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held the office of High Priest. He enjoyed church attendance in his later years and especially enjoyed participating in baby blessings and healing ordinances. He was a member of the Country Pines Branch in Clinton, Utah.

He has been the loving father of one son and two daughters, Scott (Karma) Smith of Erda; Diane (Glen) Willie of Plain City; and Jill (Dale) Shumway of St. George. He has 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grand-children and one great-great-grandchild.

He has sent off two grandsons and two great-grandsons on missions for the LDS Church, one at the present time serving in the Russia Yekinterinburg Mission. He taught his children and grandchildren the value of honesty and hard work. He loved little children and the sight of a baby could always bring a smile. His legacy to his family is one of hard work enjoying leisure time, being a good neighbor, and a good friend, loving his wife, and sacrificing for his children, We love you, Dad.

He is leaving behind his wife, children, grandchildren and two sisters, Carol Robinette of Sunset and Barbara Miller of Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert and Dean Smith. Also three sisters, Doris Burraston, Virginia Pagano and Allene Nauta.

We would like to thank those at Country Pines Assisted Living, Access Hospice and three special helpers, Carlie, Chelsie and Sarah for their loving care of our parents.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Roy City Cemetery, 5200 South 2300 West where Military Honors will be accorded. Family will meet with friends on Friday at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the mortuary from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services."
