Henrietta Bown

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Eugene for Henrietta "Retta" Bown of Springfield, who died May 21 of age-related causes. She was 89.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

She was born April 22, 1921, in Cardston, Alberta, to Edgar and Sarah Gifford Hudson. She married Glen Bown on May 29, 1953, in Salt Lake City. He died April 2, 2002.

She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She worked as a registered nurse in California, Utah and Oregon.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Sohm of Sandy, Utah, Shelley Wilson of Springfield and Holly Allred of Atlanta; a brother, Hugh Hudson of San Diego; nine grand­children; and one great-grandchild.

Burial will be at Manti City Cemetery in Manti, Utah. Arrangements by Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield."

Mickelson, Jens, farmer, wool-grower and stockraiser, son of Mickel Sorenson and Petreni Hansen, was born in Denmark, May 2, 1853. His mother emigrated to Utah in 1861, after the death of his father and he walked most all the distance across the plains. They were residents of Mount Pleasant and Circle Valley, being driven from the latter place by the Indians. At the age of 16, he worked for six bushels of wheat a month, and at 17, was a placer miner in Montana. He followed the business of freighting for twelve years, and with his savings purchased a fine farm near this city. His farm contains 200 acres, and yields handseomely from grain and stock raising. He is extensively engaged in wool-growing, is a shareholder in the Messenger and Pioneer Water Co., and an energetic and successful man. Being reared in the Mormon Chuch, he is an active member and counsellor to the bishop of his ward.
He was married in Salt Lake City, June 24, 1880, to Annie C. Anderson, daughter of Niels and Anne T., a native of Denmark. Their children are James M., Annie C., Elmer A., Minerva, Alice, Lydia M., and Catherine, deceased.

Services Are Impressive For Pioneer Settler

Funeral services for Jens Mickelson, a pioneer settler of Manti and an active church worker, were held Friday, October 30, 1936 in the South Ward Chapel with councilor A. P. Madsen in charge.

The hymns, "Lord We Come Before Thee Now" and "Oh My Father" were sung by a mixed quartet, accompanied by Miss Eunice Anderson. Mrs. Arvald Jensen sang, "Old Melodies"; a string trio composed of Hazel Simons, Carol Munk and Carrie Munk played, "A Perfect Day". Minerva Olsen and Mrs. Arvald Jensen rendered the closing song, "Going Home". The invocation was offered by N. P. Westenskow. Benediction was give by President L. R. Anderson. __ D. Livingston dedicated the grave.

H. P. Larsen, J. C. Madsen and Peter Munk, friends of brother Miceklson's for seventy years were the first speakers. They were followed by Jacob Fikstad, P. P. Dyreng, President R. D. Young and A. P. Madsen. All paid high tribute to the ____ of the deceased as they spoke of his being charitable, his honesty when dealing with his fellow men and his integrity and high ideals.

All his children and grandchildren attended the services but one grandchild, Lloyd Willardsen who is
___ completing a two-year mission in the Eastern States.

Jens Mickelson, 83, pioneer settler of Manti, died Monday, October 26, 1936 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. ___ed E. Willardson of causes incident to age.

Born in Eig, Denmark, May 2, 1853, the son of Mickel and Petrena ____ Sorensen. Mr. Mickelson joined the Church and came to Utah with his widowed mother in 1861. Crossing the plains by ox team. He settled in Manti, where he engaged in farming and stock raising.

Active in Church work in that ____, Mr. Mickelson served as bishop's counselor for eight years and was a member of the High Council for ____ years.

In 1889 called by Daniel H. Wells to be an ordiance worker in the Manti Temple for 2 years, since that tiem he has filled four missions _____ over a period of several years. In 1880 was married to Anne Christena Anderson in the Salt Lake Endowment House. She preceded him in death thirteen years.

Surviving are the following sons and daughters: James M. Mickelson, Duchesne, Utah; Anna M. Willardson and Minera M. Munk, both of Manti; Alice M. Christiansen, Nephi, Elmer A. Michelson and Lydia M. Bown of Salt Lake City; seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren aslo survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Manit South Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Manti Cemetery."

Mrs. Jens Mickelson Passes Behind Veil

Five years of constant illness culminated last Friday morning in the death of Mrs. Christina Mickelson, beloved wife of Jens Mickelson. Death came without a struggle.

Funeral services were held in the Tabernacle Monday afternoon presided over by Bishop Ernest Madsen. The speakers, N. R. Peterson, John Lowry, C. R. Dorius of Ephraim, President L. R. Anderson, Parley Christiansen of Gunnison, President J. B. Jacobson and Bishop Madsen all of whom testified to the splendid character of Mrs. Mickelson and the fine family she and her husband reared.

The choir under Bishop Reid sang "Through Deepning Trials", "Oh My Father" and "I Have Read of a Beautiful City" in the latter son Mrs. Ruby Boyden sand the solo parts. Aaron Christiansen of Gunnison played a cello solo "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and Mr. and Ms. E. E. Johnson sang, "Unanswered Yet".

Mrs. Mickelson was born October 6, 1853 in Traelose, Denmark. When 18 years of age she became a convert to the Mormon Faith and immigrated to American, coming directly to Brigham and to Manti in 1878 which has been her home since. On June 24, 1889, she was married to Jens Mickelson. Their children are James and Elmer, both of Duchesne, Utah, Mrs. Fred Willardson and Mrs. Carlyle Munk of Manti, Mrs. A. P. Christiansen of Nephi and Mrs. H. B. Bown of Hinckley and they have 15 grandchildren.

A great many relatives and friends from Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant, Gunnison and Mayfield were in attendance at the funeral."

George Andrew Hess 1916 - 2006

After eight months at Camarillo Healthcare Center and Roze Room Hospice of Ventura, under their loving care, George Andrew Hess passed away on April 6, 2009 at age 92.

George was born May 9, 1916, the first of four children born to Oralie and George W. Hess (one died as an infant) in Salt Lake City, Utah. George married his high school sweetheart, Helen Bown in 1937 and moved to California in 1938 to work for Douglas Aircraft as an engineer. He owned his own machine shop for years and spent most of his working years in aerospace.

They had five children; Marilynn, Diane, Sylvia, Kathleen and Clark. After the passing of Helen in 1961, George married Joy Myers in 1962. Joy had two sons, Bill and Steve, then 15 and 12 years old. With seven children between 7 and 23 years with six of them at home, it was a busy household of great kids. There were years of boating, fishing, diving, camping and water skiing. Later came motor-homing and travel to every state for George and Joy. Nearly 25 years in Leisure Village in Camarillo was a great retirement life, with golf, billiards, and jewelry making among other hobbies.

George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Ray and Leora. George was a good, honest man having the respect of family, co-workers and all who knew him. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his wife, 7 children, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 18, 2009, 2:00-4:00 p.m. in Leisure Village MPR Room."

Wells G. Monk

Wells George Monk, loving husband, 92, died Saturday, April 10, 1993 in Payson, Utah.

He was born June 6, 1900 in Spanish Fork, the son of Newell Wells and Lizzie Ann Gull Monk.

He married Myrtle Bown, and she later passed away. He married Alie May Ingham December 17, 1949 in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa LDS Temple.

He was educated in Spanish Fork schools and graduated from Spanish Fork High School. He attended and graduated from Brigham Young University. He taught school in Nebo School District for 40 years. He also worked for DelMonte Pack. He was a member and past president for Spanish Fork Garden Club. He was the person responsible for getting the rose garden in the Spanish Fork Park and spent many hours caring for that garden. He was a member of the LDS Church, taught Sunday School for many years, and was a high priest.

Survived by his wife of Spanish Fork; one brother and one sister, Donna Jenkins, Spanish Fork; and Ralph W. Monk, Ogden. Preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 1 p.m. at the Walker Mortuary Chapel, 187 South Main, Spanish Fork. Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday one hour prior to services.
