Old Resident Passes Quietly
Following an illness of about two months, Alfred Alder died at the family home on Sunday afternoon June 21, 1931. His illness and death was hastened by his being accidentally struck by an automobile in front of the court house the early part of April of this year, not because of the severity of the injubry but from the shock.

On December 10, 1964, Utah's oldest male citizen passed away at the age of 103 years, eight months. Joseph Hatten Carpenter passed away at 7:30 p.m. at his Manti home.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Devon, England, April 4, 1861. He was a son of Rev. Robert Wright Carpenter, a minister in the English Congregational Church and Elizabeth Link Hatten Carpenter. He was educated in a special school for minister's son in England.
As a young may in his 20's, Mr. Carpenter went to Australia. He left Austrialia in 1886 bound for San Francisco. While on board ship he was converted to the LDS Church. He came to Utah and for a time worked in Salt Lake City with George Q. Cannon.
He came to Manti in 1888 and has been a resident here since.
He married Matilda Sophia Alders on June 12, 1889 in the Manti LDS Temple. She died in February, 1920. He later married Lydia E. Schra in the Manti LDS Temple.
Between the years of 1889 and 1893, he served a mission to the Samoan Islands for the LDS Church.
He has compiled a long list of faithful service as a worker and leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
For over 20 years Mr. Carpenter served as a member of the Manti North Ward bishopric. In 1918, he was ordained patriarch in the South Sanpete Stake, a position he held for 46 years, giving over 1200 blessings during that time.
The centerarian was an assistant cashier in the Manti City Bank for 16 years, 1896 - 1911. He left this position to become recorder in the Manti Temple where he served for over 42 years and retired at the grand old age of 93, still alert and able to do his work.
The patriarch has been an inspiration to hundreds of people throughout central Utah in motivating them to do genealogical work. His life's ambition was to do the temple work for his kindred dead. His research efforts resulted in work for 40, 177 names which have been completed.
Mr. Carpenter spoke five languages, including German, French, Greek and Spanish.
He left a great heritage to his family. He loved the people of Manti and has contributed much to its history.
His survivors include his widow, now 86 years of age, and four sons and one daughter: Gerald, Edwin and Eugene Carpenter, Manti; Alvin Carpenter, Berkeley, California and Edith Madsen, Salt Lake City; 18 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 14, 1964 at 1 p.m. in the Manti Center Ward chapel. Burial was in the Manti City Cemetery.
