Leonard Adelbert Shomaker

1NEWSPAPER, Jan 2012. "Comments: Death of Leonard Adelbert "Dell" Shomaker h/o Margaret Ellen Cahoon

DEATH: The Manti Messenger, 6 FEB 1914

Dell Shomaker Suddenly Called

Dell Shomaker passed away Sunday night by the shortest, most painless death known to mortal man, cerebral hemorrhage. The news of his demise fell lke a thunderbolt upon the residents of this city as he had attended both sessions of conference Sunday where most of the citizens had seen him, in apparently good health; and where he had heard Prof. Talmage remark: "Sleep: A condition so slightly different from death that I fear to go to sleep without praying," and in less than 12 hours his sleep was changed to death in the twinkling of an eye. Sunday evening he retired feeling as well as usual. Shortly after midnight he got up to see that the children were confortably covered. He had scarcely settled his head on the pillow when his wife heard a gurgling in his throat and the end had come.

Leonard Adelbert Shomaker, son of Pres. and Mrs. Ezra Shomaker, was born in this city February 8, 1869. He married Margaret Cahoon, and to them 9 children have been born, all of whom survive him. About 18 years ago, he went to Canada where he resided 13 years, returining here 5 years ago. With the exception of these 13 years, he has resided all his life in Manti, where he has achieved a fair degree of success in farming and stock raising.

All of Mrs. Shomakers' relatives live in Canada."

Manti Matron Will Observe 80th Anniversary

Mrs. Margaret C. Shomaker will observe her eightieth birthday anniversary on March 20, 1949 with "open house" at 407 West 4th North, Manti, from two to six o'clock p.m. All her friends and relatives are cordially invited to call but a "no gifts, please," statement has also been issued.

Mrs. Shomaker was born in Salt Lake City, March 17, 1869, and is thus a "native pioneer" of Utah. Her parents were James Cordon and Ellen Wilson Cahoon, ardent members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who taught their children carefully in religion, hence Mrs. Shomaker's life has been strictly religious.

She was married to Leonard Adelbert Shomaker in the Manti Temple, October 20, 1890, and nine children were born to them: Leonard A., Delores, Ezra C., Laurain, Ellen, Eva, Margaret, Louella and Jean. Mr. Shomaker died suddenly on February 2, 1914, and the widowed mother was left with the responsibility of both father and mother in caring for her large family, a task in which she succeeded admirably.

She had the privilege of serving as an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple for 15 years, a sweet memory in her declining years.

She has nine sons and daughters, 22 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren."
