Russell E. Martin was born Oct. 7, 1923 to John Wright Martin and Clara Grace
(Lestico) Martin in Pendleton, Ore. When Russ was 12, the family moved to
Pocatello, Idaho where he graduated from high school and attended his first
two years of college. In 1942, at age 19, Russ volunteered for military
service with the Army Corps of Engineers and served four years in Europe.
After receiving an honorable discharge at the end of World War II, he attended Stanford University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering. During his summers in college, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad on survey crews in Idaho; he also helped to survey the first ski lift at the Sun Valley Ski Resort. After graduation he began his 39 year career with Morrison-Knudson Company, working at M-K headquarters in Boise and on construction projects across the United States. As Assistant Chief Engineer, he prepared bids for heavy construction projects around the world.
In August of 1953 Russ married Dorris Ireland, enjoying 55 years of marriage.
They had three children, Diana Shaltry, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Philip Martin
(Kellie) of Bozeman, Mont.; and David Martin (Anne Marie) of Boise, Idaho and five grandchildren: Michael Shaltry, Jamie Rogers, Philip Martin, Theo and Claire Martin.
He was an eagle scout, a member of El Korah Shrine, Masonic Lodge, the Scottish
Rite, and Ashlar Lodge. He enjoyed full-scale and model trains, organic
gardening, and woodworking.
Russ is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family would
like to extend a special thank you to St. Alphonsus Cancer Care Center, Dr.
Schultheiss and the nurses on his staff, the staff of Life's Doors Hospice,
and family and friends for their love and support. In lieu of flowers, a
contribution to the Shriners Hospitals for Children
(support.shrinershospitals.org, 800-241-4438) or Life's Doors Hospice
(www.lifesdoors.com, 208-344-6500) would be appreciated.
A memorial service will be held for Russ on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 2 p.m. at
Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise, Idaho. Condolences for the family may be
