Another Pioneer Dead

Hans Denison Sr., died Wednesday morning at 6:45, January __, 1904, aged 79 years, 7 months. Mr. Denison's last ilness ____several months, and he has been confined to his bed for ___weeks. The funeral services will be held Saturday at one o'clock in the Tabernacle.

Deceased was born 20th July, 1824 in Gjentofte, Copenhagen, Denmark. He had ___three wives, two of whom preceded him to the grave. He was the father of twelve children, ______ whom, seven sons and two daughters are living. There are ____eight living grandchildren and ____dead; one living great grandchild and five dead.

Mr. Denison was baptized into the Mormon Church in Norway in 1851, and emigrated to Utah in the year 1853. He first settled in Spring City, and after a few a few years residence there, he moved to ______ where he has resided every since.

Mr. Denison labored ext____ in the erection of the Manti, Salt Lake and St. George Temples and since their completion he has done much work for his dead relatives having taken endowments ____persons.
He was devoted to his religion and for forty years has acted as wart teacher.

During the Indian trouble Mr. Denison was always ready to take his part in standing guard and other duty devolving upon ____. He endured all the trials ____to the early settlement of Sanpete County. He was an _____honorable citizen and respected by all who knew him. The _____ family will have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement."

John Crawford

John Crawford, an old and respected citizen of this city, died last Thursday afternoon at his residence. Mr. Crawford had been ailing for some time and those who attended him knew that he would not last long.

He was born September 30, 1829, in Wixton, Peebleshire, Scotland, and in the early fifties emigrated to Utah, and in 1853 married Cecelia Sharp. He was the father of a large family and most of his children survive him.

Impressive funeral services were held at the Council House on Sunday afternoon. The speakers were John B. Maiben, John Lowry, Sr., J. D. T. McAllister, George E. Bench, Sr., David Shand and Bishop William T. Reid. Each of these gentlemen were friends and acquaintances of long standing of deceased. They spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Crawford and bore testimony to his honor and sterling qualities. Mr. Crawford was a consistent Latter-day Saint, and at various times held position in the church. The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved family."

Mrs. Elizabeth Snow Crawford, ____ time and highly respected women of this city, died Saturday _____, September 23, 1905, at 3:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nora Braithwaite, after suffering for some months of Ne____.

The deceased was a daughter of Gardner and Sarah S. (Hasting) Snow and was born at Laramie, ____ County, Illinois, January 2, 1840. She was the second wife of the late, John Crawford, to whom she was married in February, 1869 ?. She was the mother of twelve children all of whom are living and were present at the funeral. They are as follows: Mrs. Sarah M. Tatton; Martha M. Tatton; Mrs. Nora Braithwaite; Mrs. C. D. He__h; ____ J., Charles C.; Albert D. and Frank Crawford.

The funeral took place at the ____cle Tuesday afternoon at _____ and was presided over by ____ Peterson. The speakers were, John B. Maiben, William _____, Daniel Henrie and ___Shomaker. A large crowd of family and frieds were present to pay their last respects. The pallbearers consisted entirely of her sons-in-law."

Adeline Eliza Coons Buchanan

Mrs. Adeline Coons Buchanan who died in this city last Friday was born in Kirtland, Ohio November 22, 1838 and was therefore over 78 years old.

She has been a faithful Latter-day Saint from childhood, passed through the trying times for the church in Illinois and crossed the plains in 1818 with an ox team. In 1840, she came to Manti, one of the earliest pioneers, with her husband, John Buchanan, who died in this city in 1897. The immediate cause of her death was pneumonia from which she suffered for about a week. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Buchanan has buried eight children and four survive her, Mrs. Nancy Larson, Mrs. T. Warren and Thadeus and George Buchanan, all of this city."

History Sanpete & Emery Counties Utah, Ogden, Utah, W. H. Lever, 1898:
Merriam, Amasa E., son of Edwin P. and Hannah B. Finch, was born in New Hartford, Oneida County, New York, October 25, 1832. His father died in Nauvoo, Illinois, September 14, 1842, and his mother married Isaac Morley, who led the first company of settlers to this city. He grew to manhood and was engaged for two years as mail carrier between Salt Lake City and San Bernardino, California, afterward serving as County Assessor and Collector for about 25 years; City Recorder about 14 years and City Assessor and Collector a number of years. About 1864 he went to the Missouri river for merchandise, and through cold and exposure became partially paralyzed. He took an active part in church and public matters till his death, February 1, 1897. His wife was Olive D., daughter of Andrew and Hannah Hull Lytle, born in Caldwell County, Missouri, July 18, 1837. They were married in Beaver, Utah, May 27, 1858, and have eight children: Amasa E., Hannah, Ellen, wife of Jedediah Crawford; Olive C., wife of David Madsen, Loretta, wife of Silas M. Callaway, Julia C., wife of Andrew Larsen; Andrew L., married to Eliza Boyington; Rosetta and Orissa, at home.

Amasa E. Merriam

Amasa E. Merriam was born October 25, 1882 in Utica, New York. A short time afterwards, his parents moved to Ohio. They soon moved to Springfield, Illinois, where after residning two years, they settled in Nauvoo. In the fall of 1842, his father died. Amasa was then ten years old. Two years after this, his mother married again and the family took part in that journey of hardships across the plains in 1846 and 47 which has made its participants heros.

Mr. Merriam was one of the first to behold the "land of the honey-bee" and passed through the privations and vicissitudes of early pioneer life. In 1849, his step-father and family helped to start the settlement of Manti. He has been across the "plains" once since his first arrival and for some time carried the U.S. Mail overland from Salt Lake to California passing through the extreme dangers of that period.

He has served 21 years as assesser and collector of Sanpete County and during 14 years of the same time was city clerk of manti City. Amasa E. Merriam has been prominent in this community from Manti's earliest settlement. He has been an invalid for fifteen years during which time he has been unable to rise from his chair without assistance, still he has taken great interest in seeing to the _____ progress of his native town. He leaves an honored name and Manti is called to witness the demise of one of her noblest sons."

Saturday Rites Scheduled For James Steck

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 23 in the Manti Center Ward Chapel for James Frederick Steck, 93, who died Tuesday, September 19th at 6 p.m. in a Nephi rest home of causes incident to age. Friends may call at the Buchanan Mortuary Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday prior to services.

Mr. Steck was born in Manti on March 2, 1874 to Jens Frederick and Inger Sorensen Steck. He married Sylveretta Dixon on February 23, 1898 in Manti. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. She died October 13, 1964.

He was a farmer. He was also a High Priest in the Manti Center Ward and was a lifelong resident of Manti.

Survivors include sons and daughters, Eldon Steck, Roy; Vernon Steck, Goshen, Utah; Mrs. Ruth Beaudrow, Mrs. Terry (Maud) Wright, Mrs. William (Venice) Murphy, and Eugene Steck, all of Salt Lake City; Grant Steck, Tooele; Mrs. Grace Slade, San Francisco, California; and Mrs. Roy W. (Alta) Hahne, Pocatello, Idaho; 18 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery.

James Steck

Funeral services were held in the Manti Center Ford Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 23 for James Frederick Steck, 93. Mr. Steck died on Tuesday, September 19, 1967 at 6 p.m. in a Nephi rest home of causes incindent to age.

Friends are invited to call during the afternoon when the entire family of ten living sons and daughters expect to be together to honor their parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Steck have been lifelong residents of Manti and can recall many wonderful changes which have taken place in the community. They especially enjoy referring to the many conveniences and opportunities young people now have which were unknown in earlier years, and they think these are quite all right.

They have been particularly interested in chuch affairs all their lives; they enjoy their family, appreciate their friends and neighbors, and find joy in simple living.

Mr. Steck was born March 2, 1873 and Mrs. Steck on Mary 17, 1873. They were married February 23, 1898. Eleven children were born to them, ten of whom are still living. They also have 18 grandchildren. Their sons and daughters are: N. Eldon Steck, Roy, Utah; J. Mrs. Steck Rites Set For Friday

Funeral services for Retta Dixon Steck, 89, will be held Friday, October 16 at 1 p.m. in the Manti Center Ward LDS Chapel. Friends may call at the Buchanan Mortuary Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday prior to the services.

Mrs. Steck died Tuesday, October 13 at the Nephi Hospital of causes incidnet to age. She was born May 17, 1875 at Pettyville, west of Sterling, Utah, a daughter of William E. and Mary Bunce Dixon. She came to Manti at the age of 15 and resided here since. She married James F. Steck on February 23, 1898 at Manti. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.

Mrs. Steck was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her husband; four sons and six daughters: Eugene Steck, Mrs. Jack (Ruth) Beaudrow, Mrs. Ferry (Maud) Wright and Mrs. William (Venice) Murphy, all of Salt Lake City; Eldon Steck, Clearfield; Vernon Steck, Goshen, Utah County; Mrs. Roy (Alta) Hahne, Pocatello, Idaho; Mrs. Grace Slade and Mrs Idonna Lee, San Francisco, California; Grant Steck, Tooele; 19 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Floyd Dixon, Salt Lake City; Darrell and Elmer Dixon, San Diego; Mrs. Maime Myers and Mrs. Mildred Beal, Ephraim.

Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery."

Influenza Cases Which Prove Fatal

H. LeRoy Larson

The grim realities of the seriousness of Spanish influenza are beginning to come home to Manti people.

H. LeRoy Larson was the first Mantian to fall a victim to the disease, passing away at Blackrock, Sunday.

LeRoy left Manti October 15, 1918 for the sheep herd at Blackrock. He was not feeling well when he left home but was not ill enough to suspicion influenza.

After reaching camp his condition soon became serious and he went to Blackrock where relatives here were summoned. His father, A. H. Larson, reached his side Saturday noon and his mother and wife early Sunday morning, after riding all night, the end coming a few hours later.

LeRoy was 27 years old lacking three days. He leaves a wife and three children.

The remains were shipped to Manti and funeral ceremonies were held at the cemetery Wednesday evening."

Stella Olson Passes, Funeral On Friday

Funeral services for Stella L. Olson will be held in the Manti North Ward Chapel Friday, September 16, 1960 at 2 p.m. with Bishop Frank G. Wanlass conducting. Mrs. Olson died Tuesday afternoon at a rest home following an extended illness.

She was born in Manti, February 24, 1893, to Jacob and Christina Sorenson Marx. She spent her early life and attended school in Sterling.

She was married to H. LeRoy Larson, July 13, 1913 and he died October 27, 1918. She was married to Osmond Olson January 1, 1836 in the Manti Temple.

An active church worker, she had served as a Primary and as a Relief Society officer and as a Temple worker.

She was a Manti telephone operator for some 20 years and also did much work in the community as a practical nurse.

Survivors include her husband, Manti; two sons and a daughter, Don L. Larson, Durango, Colorado; Mrs. H. R. (Helen) Braithwaite, El Paso, Texas and Morris M. Larson, Orem; a sister and two brothers, Mrs. Mack (Ethel) Jesnen, Sterling; Ervin E. Marx, Salt Lake City and Lorin Marx, Spanish Fork; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and two foster children, Staker Olsen and Delma O. Bennett.

Friends may call at the home Thursday evening and Friday before the services. Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery under the direction of the Buchanan Mortuary."

   Rulon was born October 9, 1899 to Lars and Mary Minerva Nelson Johnson in Moroni, Utah. He married Blanche Davis in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 6, 1928. She passed away December 4, 1990.He filled an LDS mission to the North West States. His church work has included 21 years as a temple ordinance worker, along with his wife at the Manti LDS Temple. He served 11 years as a member of the Moroni Stake High Council and 12 years as superintendent of the West Ward Sunday School. He was counselor to two ward bishops and spent many years in this position. He supervised the Moroni Stake welfare farm for seven years and served as a home teacher in the Moroni 1st Ward. Rulon served as secretary for the Moroni Land and Grazing Company for 42 years and served on the board of M & M Irrigation Company for 30 years. He also served as mayor of Moroni from 1953 to 1957.
   Rulon is survived by LaRue (Dick) Braithwaite[0] of Sandy; Elaine (Jerry) Canfield of Layton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Erma Carlston and Alice Young; one sister-in-law, Arva Johnson. Preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and three sisters.
   Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the Moroni LDS Stake Center (82 N. Center Street). A viewing will be held Tuesday at the Stake Center from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Moroni City Cemetery. Services provided by Ursenbach Funeral Home of Mt.
