OBIT: The Richfield Reaper, 28 SEP 2011

Nedra Stewart

A sweet, compassionate, faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Nedra Denison Stewart, 82, passed away peacefully Sept. 24, 2011, a beautiful fall day, surrounded by her family in the Gunnison Valley Hospital. This is the location Mom and Dad contributed so much time and energy to assure its success. It was very appropriate this would be the place Dad would come to take her home, back to Heavenly Father.

Mom was born in Sterling, to Forrest and Geniel Peacock Denison, Nov. 12, 1928. She met her sweetheart while attending Snow College and earned the crown as homecoming queen.
Dad would always say, "Your mother was the most beautiful girl on the Snow College campus." She married her eternal sweetheart, Dr. Lamar H. Stewart, Sept. 29, 1948, in the Manti LDS temple. He preceded her in death Oct. 22, 2008.

She lived most of her life in Gunnison, which she loved almost as much as her family and the LDS church. She served in many capacities in the LDS church as a stake Relief Society president, ward Relief Society president, stake primary president, Cub Scout leader earning her silver beaver award, and in the young women's organization. She and her husband served in the North Carolina Charlotte Mission from 1985-1988, where he was the president. They loved their missionary service and all the missionaries. She worked tirelessly supporting her husband with his numerous church callings and as a medical doctor.

Her most prized possessions were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her door was always open for a great meal and a listening ear. Her grandchildren will miss hearing her ask if they would like a snack or piece of candy she had readily available in her purse.

She was a homemaker in every sense of the word - raising her children and grandchildren made her the happiest. She was accomplished at bottling fruits and vegetables, which were grown in their garden. She loved birds, especially red cardinals. She had a beautiful collection of porcelain birds. She loved life and maintained a positive attitude regardless of the mortal trials she endured. She was a woman of courage and faith and all who knew her will miss her sincere smile, hug, and words of "I love you."

Mom is survived by her children, Scott and Marilyn Stewart, Gunnison; Pam and Gail Buchanan, Manti; Lori and Bob Mattson, Gunnison; Dr. Matthew and Brenda Stewart, Maitland, Fla.; Mary and Wayne Huntington, Orangeville; Jim and Stephanie Stewart, Sunset; Sally Neal, Gunnison; 34 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Norma (LaMar) Fredrickson, Milton (Lola) Denison, Calvin (Alice) Denison, Darlene (Arlo) Larson.

Preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-law Michael Neal, and grandson Chandler Wayne Huntington.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sept. 30, at noon, in the Gunnison LDS stake center, 80 West Center. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the stake center in Gunnison and again Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery.
