Another Pioneer Gone

The passing of William Bench marks the last great summon's of another of our early, hardy pioneers.

He was bron the 6th of November in Southampton, Hampshire, England. With his father, mother, brother and sister he left England in 1851. It took them 8 weeks to cross the ocean. They arrived in New Orleans on the 6th day of April 1851 from there they continued their journey on to Coucil Bluffs arriving on the 23rd of May, where they remained for the season, continuing their journey across the plains the next July and arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley some time in October.

By request of Brigham Young the family moved to Mt. Pleasant living there until 1853. The Indians drove them out after a hand fight when William, then only a boy, fought all night to protect the women and children they had hidden in a cellar. They then joined other families at Spring City, where the Indians made another raid on them taking all their stock and horses. Later they moved to Manti where the family resided, part of them them the rest of their lives.

He was a hard worker and helped build all the roads, got out the lumber, donated a large share of it for a tabernacle and other public buildings. He was the first man in Manti to build and own a steam saw mill.

William Bench was at all times a faithful latter-day saint and held many offices of trust in the church.

The last few years of his life he has spent in that great labor of love, Temple work. He had three wives and was the father of 27 children, 1 wife and 15 children preceding him to the spirit world.

He died the 9th of July 1920 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. P. Westenskow, where everything that willing hearts and hands could do was done for his comfort."
