OBIT: The Manti Messenger, 23 JUN 1933

Heart Attack Is Fatal To Manti Pioneer Woman

Mary E. Dixon, a pioneer of Manti and wife of William Dixon, passed away suddenly Sunday evening immediately following a heart attack, after spending a very pleasant day with a number of her family. Among these were her brother and his wife, whom she had not seen for forty years.

Mrs. Dixon was very active up to the time of her death. Until recent years she had been an active member of the Relief Society organization, having served twenty-one years as a teacher. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

She often repeated her childhood experiences which occurred during the Black Hawk uprisings, also during the days she spent in the cotton fields of Dixie picking cotton and also while spending nights in a covered wagon which was drawn by oxen. While crossing the plains she listened to the howling of the hungry wolves as they tried to climb the wheels of the wagon after the camp fires had died away.

Many long days were spent by Mrs. Dixon carding, spinning and weaving cloth to make clothing. She was a resident of Manti most of her life and a widow for the past thirty four years. She was seventy seven years old at the time of her death.

Mrs. Dixon is the daughter of Lewis DeMott Bunce and Almira Vorhees Bunce and is survived by two brothers and sisters: Ross Bunce, Portland, Oregon; William Bunce, Fruita, Colorado; and Mrs. Luella Christensen, Emery; Mrs. Maud Rock, Salt Lake City. Also by eight children: Mrs. James F. Steck, Manti; Mrs. Charles G. Alder, Manti; Mrs. J. Ernest Beal, Ephraim; Mrs. M. Myers, Marashel, Missouri; William Dixon, Tooele; Floyd Dixon, Salt Lake City; Elmer Dixon, Los Angeles, California; and Darrel Dixon, San Diego, California.

There are thirty three grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Manti South Ward Chapel."
