Services Held For Veteran Of Black Hawk War

Funeral services for Jorgen Madsen, 87, Black Hawk War veteran, and early pioneer of Manti were held here Tuesday afternoon in the Manti South Ward Chapel, Bishop Alma Peterson in charge.

Mr. Madsen, a prominent sheep and cattle man was born in Falster, Denmark, August 21, 1849, a son of Ole and Annie Larson Madsen. The family embraced the gospel in their native land and came to America in 1863, and made their home in Manti.

He was married to Hannah Anderson, daughter of Judge William Anderson on December 12, 1879 in the Salt Lake Endowment House They were the parents of nine children, eight of whom survive, as well as his widow. The children are: President Ernest Madsen, Lowey Madsen, Leslie Madsen, and Mrs. Russell Moffitt of Manti; Mrs. C. W. Sorenson, Mrs. E. R. Poulson of Mt. Pleasant; Spencer W. Madsen, Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Arthur Ford, Pocatello, Idaho. There are more than eighty direct descendants from this union.

Mr. Madsen was also prominent in church capacities and in later life, devoted his time entirely to temple work. He filled a mission to his native country from 1907-09. He was called by President Brigham Young in 1868 to go east to aid the distressed emigrants enroute to Utah. It was upon this fatal trip that six men lost their lives in Green River, Wyoming, when the cattle stampeded and the ferry boat capsized. He was the only boy rescued of the seven who were swept into the water. He remembered well Chief Black Hawk who frequently came to Manti on friendly visits as well as war attacks. He was a worker on the first railroad when it was laid in Utah, and was given special honor on the program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the driving of the golden spike at Ogden. He has been a subscriber to the Deseret News for 66 years.

The funeral services were rendered as follows:

Quartet: "God Moves In A Mysterious Way" directed by Eunice Anderson; invocation, Bishop E. T. Reid; speakers, Peter Munk, J.C. Madsen, L. R. Anderson, his grandson, Wallace Madsen represented the grandchildren; C. W. Sorenson and Bishop Alma Peterson.
