Death Calls Mother While Attending Sick Bedside
An attack of heart trouble was fatal to Mrs. Ethel Braithwaite Jolley, widow of the late F. M. Jolley of Manti in a Salt Lake hospital Wednesday morning. Death came almost suddenly. She had been called to the city from her home here to see her daughter who had just undergone a serious operation for appendicitis. While sitting at the bedside of her daughter, she complained of an acute pain. She was hurried to another room, but expired without rallying.
Mrs. Jolley was born in Manti 48 years ago, the daughter of George and Sarah Braithwaite. In 1898, she married Framcis M. Jolley. For a number of years they lived in Manti. Sterling was their next home, then Talmadge and later Duchesne became their abiding place. Three years ago when Mr. Jolley died the family moved to Manti which has been their home since. Eleven children were born to them, nine of whom survive are: LaGrand, Quince, Evan, Delphia, Ethel, Homer, Lillis, Ruth and Ruby, the latter two twins.
Mrs. Jolley is also survived by six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held in the Center Ward Chapel Sunday afternoon commencing at 2 o'clock.

FUNERAL: The Manti Messenger, 21 MAY 1926
Impressive Services Held For Beloved Matron
Impressive funeral services were held in the tabernacle alst Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock over the remains of Mrs. Ethel Braithwaite Jolley. Bishop C. O. Stott presided at the services. A profusion of beautiful flowers marked the floral offerings and words of comfort were spoken to the bereaved family of the splendid life and character of the departed. All Mrs. Jolley's children except her daughter Ethel who is in a Salt Lake hospital recovering from an appendicitis operation were in attendance at the services as were her sisters and brothers.
The choir under the leadership of choirester George Bradley sang "Though Deeping Trials" as the first number, "Abide With Me" for the second number and "Sometime We'll Understand" as the closing song. Mrs. Vera Keller sang "Oh My Father" assisted by the choir. Ray P. Lund offered the opening prayer and Louis H. Hougaard pronounced the benediction.
The speakers were Bishop N. R. Peterson, Pres. J. R. Jacobson, Bishop E. T. Teid and Bishop C. O. Stott. The grave was dedicated by S. Peter Peterson.
Besides her children, Mr. and Mrs. Q. G. Crawford of Salt Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hardy of Delta, Mr. and Mrs. Alma Fredrickson of Gunnison, Mrs. Effie McDonald of Salt Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Braithwaite of Ephraim, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Braithwaite and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Braithwaite of Monroe were present.
Mrs. Jolley died of heart trouble on April 11, 1926 in Salt Lake a few minutes after leaving the bedside of her daughter Ethel.
The minor children left orphans were taken by the three older sons and will be cared for in their homes. Miss Ethel has a home with Mr. and Mrs. Q. C. Crawford."

Funeral services over the remains of Ruben Vaugh [Lavon] Jolley were held in the North Ward Chapel last Friday afternoon soon after the body was brought here on the afternoon train from Riverton where the yound man died from pneumonia the Wednesday before.
Bishop Peterson presided at the funeral. Henry Maylett offered the opening prayer. Those speaking were Bishop Peterson, Edgar T. Reid, George Braithwaite, and Hyrum Bown pronounced the benediction. The ward choir sang. Mrs. Jesse Keller sang a solo and Verlin Braithwaite of Ephraim played a violin solo. Q. G. Crawford dedicated the grave.
Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral besides the mother and brothers and sisters were Mr. and Mrs. Q. G. Crawford of Salt Lake, Mrs. Effie McDonald of Heber, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Braithwaite of Ephraim, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest V. Dies as the Result of a Bullet Wound
Edward Braithwaite kills self either accidentally or with suicidal intent.
Edward Braithwaite, 33 years of age, formerly associated with his two brothers in the conduct of a store at Manti, died last night at the emergency hospital froma bullet wound. The wound was self-inflicted, either accidentally or with suicidal intent.
When Mr. Braithwaite reached his home at 276 East Second South Street yesterday afternoon he greeted his wife and two children with a smile. He went to the bathroom and a moment later a shot was heard. Mrs. Braithwaite ran to the bathroom and found her husband lying on the floor with a bullet wound in his head. A pistol was on the floor beside him.
The police ambuland was called and Braithwaite taken to the emergency hospital. He died soon after reaching the hospital.
Mr. Braithwaite's mother, a pioneer of Manti, died ten days ago. Since that time Mr. Braithwaite had been very despondent. He was known to have been worrying a great deal in business in Manti, but since last July had be in the emplay of an insurance company in Salt Lake. Though he had been depressed lately, he was apparently in better spirits than usual yesterday.

Last Respects Paid To C. Braithwaite
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 8, 1967 at 12:30 p.m. in the Manti North Ward Chapel for Charles G. Braithwaite. He died at his home on Wednesda, April 5, 1967 of natural causes at the age of 77.
He was born May 11, 1889 in the home where tom Hougaard now lives. His parents were George and Sarah (Johnston) Braithwaite. He was educated in the Manti schools and go his start in the grocery business as a delivery boy at the age of 13 in the building which still houses his grocery business. He retired from active work in the grocery business at the age of 74, but maintained a keen interest in int until the last.
He was married to Eva Tuttle, daughter of William M. and Francis Emma (Bench) Tuttle on September 28, 1910 in the Manti LDS Temple. She died August 10, 1955.
Charlie, as he was known, was active in church and civic affairs all his life. He served on the city council, was bishop of the Manti North Ward for six years, and served in the South Sanpete stake presidency.
Survivors include three sons, Royden, Cedar City; Reed, Sepulveda, California, and Wilbur, Manti. Another son, Burke, was killed in World War II and a daughter, Maureen, also died during the war. He has one living brother, Ernest Braithwaite.
The funeral services were conducted by Bishop Ray P. Cox and were as follows:

Eva Braithwaite Buried Saturday
Funeral services were held in the Manti North Ward last Saturday for Eva Tuttel Braithwaite, 64, wife of Charles G. Braithwaite, who died Wednesday evening of last week after a long illness.
Mrs. Braithwaite was born in Manti, February 18, 1891, a daughter of William and Emma Bench Tuttle. She was married to Mr. Braithwaite in the Manti LDS Temple, September 28, 1910.
She was an acitve member of the LDS Church serving in the Primary Association and Relief Society in many capacities. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Gold Star Mother.
She is survived by her husband, Manti; three sons, Dr. Royden Braithwaite, Cedar City; Reed, Los Angeles; and Wilbur T., Manti; four brothrs and two sisters, Eugene Tuttle, Grand Junction, Colorado; LaMar Tuttle and Byron Tuttle, Springville; Ambrose Tuttle, Manti; Mrs. Warren (Vera) Jensen, Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Averill Larsen (Ruth), Manti; and by five grandchildren.
The funeral services were under the direction of Bishop Keith Stevenson. Speakers were Mrs. Hazel Cox, Averill Larsen, Andrew Judd and Bishop Stevenson of Manti and William G. Barton of Ephraim.
Prelude and postlude music was played by Ruth Anderson. Other music included selections by the North Ward Ladies Chorus, directed by Louise Hulme and accompanied by Shirley Cox; a piano solo, "O My Father", by LaVar Jenson , and a vocal duet, "In The Garden", by Mr. and Mrs. Ellis E. Johnson.
The invocation was by Thomas Houraard and the benediction by President R. Clair Anderson. The prayer in the home was by Max Larsen.
Burial was in the Manti City Cemetery under the direction of the Buchanan Mortuary. Ambrose Tuttle dedicated the grave."

Cpl. Burke T. Braithwaite died in a plane crash while flying a mission in the Pacific during World War II. A granite marker is among the 300 memorials headstones of Utah's Missing in Action tucked around in the Salt Lake City Memory Grove Meditation Chapel.
The marker, for 25 years, rested among the memorial headstones, until in the early 1970s. Then Braithwaite family learned of the marker's disappearance when Royden Braithwaite, President of Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, stopped by to pay respects to his brother. The Salt Lake City police eventually recovered the marker after an elderly woman reported that someone had thrown the 40-pound memorial onto her front porch under cover of darkness. She opened her door in time to see a Volkswagen speeding away.
Police called Wilbur Braithwaite, long-time basketball and tennis coach at Manti High School, to pick up his brother brother's memorial. Detectives theorized that activists protesting the Vietnam War were the culprits. This was a common occurrence, as gravestones of veterans of all wars had been disturbed throughout the country's cemeteries, according the officer. Groundskeepers however insist that vandals, not antiwar activists periodically wreak havoc on Salt Lake City's cemeteries and memorials.
In the fall of 2003, when the family read about a restoration project at Memory Grove, Wilbur again asked permission to return the marker, which had been stored in the garage of his Manti home for the past three decades. The marker was re-laid, following verification.
Burke, a radio operator and navigator, was killed off Samara Island in the Philippines in 1945, two months before Japan surrendered.
He had won prizes for his piano playing while in high school. During training; he performed with the South Dakota symphony orchestra. "He was a marvelous man and the town's favorite," said Alice Braithwaite, widow of Royden. "And in a family of four outstanding boys, he was the family favorite – and none of the other brothers complained."

Burke Braithwaite Dies In Plane Crash
Corporal Burke T. Braithwaite, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Braithwaite, was killed in action June 18, 1945, when the plane in which he was a radio operator-gunner, plunged in the sea off the Phillippine Islands.
The plance took off at 5:15 a.m. from it base, rose to an altitude of 200 feet then plummeted into the sea. The plane exploded on impact. Three members of the crew survived with serious injury.
Burke is 22 years of age and enlisted in the Army Reserve September 1942 and wnet on active duty April 5, 1943, when the Reserve was called up.
He received his training at Fresno, California; Alva, Oklahoma, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and March Field, California. He was serving with the 13th Air Force 5th Bomb Group as a radio operator and gunner, and served as radio operator for his squadron.
Burke was a graduate of the Manti High School where he served as student body president in 1941, and attended the University of Utah and B.Y.U. He was an accomplished pianist having accompanied the Symphony Singers and Glee Club at the U., and was the 1941 Gold medal winner at the State Fair for this piano work.
Memorial services will be held tonight in the Manti Center Ward Chapel."

Another Manti Pioneer Called
Rowland Braithwaite one of the pioneer citizens of this community, died at the home of his son, James O. Braithwaite, Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Braithwaite was born in Kendal, Westmoreland, England, May 11, 1836, immigrating to Utah in 1863. He was active during the Black Hawk War. He was married in 1857 to Hannah Armandy, who died several years ago.
The following children survive him: Mrs. Mary Denison of Sterling; Mrs. Elizabeth Barnson of Junction; and John R.; Thomas; Joseph; James; Riley; and Martin Braithwaite and Mrs. May Buchanan of Manti.
Funeral services were held at the Tabernacle Wednesday afternoon."

Death Of A Good Woman
Mrs. Hannah Ormandy Braithwaite, wife of Rowland Braithwaite of this city died Wednesday evening of Cyatic Rheumatism. Deceased was born in Bootle, Cumberland, England, July 7, 1836. She was married to Mr. Braithwaite on July 18, 1857 and emmigrated to Utah in 1863, arrived in Manti the same year and was shortly afterwards baptized. Her illness was long and severe, suffering greatly, and when the hour of her mortal career came to her release, the grief of her family was modified by thankfulness that her suffering was ended.
She has been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and died in full faith of her belief, hoping to be worthy of a resurection with the righteous. She has been a loving mother to her children and an affectionate and ever obeying wife to her husband.
She was the mother of nine children, six sons and three daughters whom are all living and were at her bedside when she died. She possessed the affection, confidence, and esteem of a very large circle of relatives and friends. The husband and family are now without a wife and mother and have the greatest sympathy of the whole community.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1:30."

Another Manti Pioneer Called
Rowland Braithwaite one of the pioneer citizens of this community, died at the home of his son, James O. Braithwaite, Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Braithwaite was born in Kendal, Westmoreland, England, May 11, 1836, immigrating to Utah in 1863. He was active during the Black Hawk War. He was married in 1857 to Hannah Armandy, who died several years ago.
The following children survive him: Mrs. Mary Denison of Sterling; Mrs. Elizabeth Barnson of Junction; and John R.; Thomas; Joseph; James; Riley; and Martin Braithwaite and Mrs. May Buchanan of Manti.
Funeral services were held at the Tabernacle Wednesday afternoon."

Estimable Man From Sterling Answers Call
The last call came to Hans Denison of Sterling last Friday. For nearly two years, he has been ill which terminated in his death. Funeral services conducted by Bishop Eric Ludvigson were held in the Sterling Ward Chapel Monday. Following the service the body was brought to Manti and layed away in the city cemetery.
Those who spoke at the funeral were: L. C. Olsen, Ray P. Lund, Ernest Munk, Hyrum Christenson, W. H. Bailey and Bishop Ludvigosn. The ward choir furnished appropriate music and Mrs. Mary Boyington and Mrs. Leah Alder sang "Shall We Meet Beyond The River." The speaker testified to the fine character of the deceased, his steady dependable habits, his industry and faithfulness.
The deceased was born in Manti July 29, 1856, the son of Hans and Inger Denison. The deceased was marrie first to Mary Ann Lund who lived but a short time after. On November 8, 1881, he married Mary Agnes Braithwaite. For a few years, they made their home in Manti and then moved to Sterling where they have lived for nearly forty years and reared a large family. Two boys and one girl have preceded their father to the grave. The mother and following children survive: Leon, Mrs. Melinda Peterson, Hyrum, Edward, Myrland, Mrs. Myrtle Jensen and Forest all of Sterling and Roland of Manti. Forty grandchildren survive.
Not only was there a large attendance of Sterling people at the funeral, but nearly all his playmates and chums now residing in Manti were in attendance.

Young Man Dies Following Operation
Homer Denison of Sterling lost in his _____ struggle for life in the Salina hospital Tuesday afternoon. They young man was stricken with influenza some time ago. While he was down with the flu, he developed appendicitis. He was taken to the Salina hospital and operated on, but the condition of the appendics was so bad at the time of ther first operation that grave doubts were left for his recovery from the first. Two other operations were performed but to no avail. He died Tuesday.
He is a young man, 19 years of age. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Denison of Sterling, formerly of Manti. He is survived by five brothers and three sisters.
He is well known in Manti, having attended the high school here two years ago and also a part of last year."
