Impressive Rites Held For Veteran

Impressive funeral services were held Monday for Harold R. Braithwaite, 27, who died at his home in Manti December 29, 1949, following a lingering illness.

Harold was born in Manti, March 15, 1922, a son of Miles and Ellen Shomaker Braithwaite. He always called Manti home and graduated from Manti schools. During World War II, he spent four years in the U. S. Navy, most of the time in the Pacific, where he saw much action.

He married Beth Marie Jensen on March 15, 1944, while on leave from the Navy. They had on child, JoAnn, age 2 1/2 years.

He is survived by his wife and daughter of Manti; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Braithwaite of Manti; one brother, Dean Braithwaite; four sisters, Mrs. Ardith Madsen, Shirlene and Barbara Braithwaite and Mrs. Garner Black; and by a grandmother, Mary Ann Braithwaite, Manti.

FUNERAL SERVICES --

A huge crowd of friends and relatives attended the funeral services, which were conducted by Bishop Ward Magleby. Many beautirul floral tributes were given in respect to the deceased.

Prelude and postlude music was by Mr. and Mrs. R. Easton Moffitt. "Come Unto Me" was sung by the South Ward quartet of Claire Dyreng, Mrs. Viola Tatton, Ray P. Dyreng and Erastus Petersen, accompanied by Pauline Dyreng. Invocation was by Max Larsen after which "Perfect Day" was sung by Karl Keller, accompanied by Donna Vee Pack.

Speaker A. J. Judd told that he had always been a friend to Harold and to the Braithwaite family, who were his neighbors. He said that we too often forget the service given by the men who served in the armed forces during the war. Mr. Judd used Harold's autobiography through much of his talk and read in Harold's own words the accounts of his life.

The autobiography told of Harold's great love for sports, especially basketball and baseball. It told of his entry into the U. S. Navy on October 5, 1942, and of his quick assignment to a ship in the Atlantic. Harold wrote that he served almost all of his Navy time aboard the U.S.S. Foote, a new destroyer.

The accounts of Harold's war action, as written in his autobiography and read by Mr. Judd, told of the severe action seen by Harold and the men on his ship. It told that the ship was crippled in action in the Solomon Islands and towed to the states for repairs. It was while his ship was in for repairs that Harold got a 30-days furlough and came home to marry Beth Jensen.

When Harold's ship was again fit for service, Harold wrote that they saw action in the landings made in the Philippine Islands. It was here that he sustained wounds in his leg and back from a Kamakazi plane that crashed and exploded right next to the ship. He was returned to duty about 30 days after receiving the wounds, before they were completely healed, and he then saw action in the bloddy Okinawa campaign, he wrote.

Following the end of the war, Haorld returned to the states with his ship and was scheduled for an early dischard. He received a severe disappointment, howere, when he was place in a Naval hospital for 9 weeks to recive treatment for complications coming from his back wound. His discharge was given as a medical discharge.

Mr. Judd paid tribute to Harold's wife and daughter and to his family and said he hoped they might be bouoyed up in their time of trial.

"Going Home" was sung by VeLois Nielson and Gwen Chapman, accompanied by jane Anderson.

Speaker Oscar C. Peterson of Sterling told that he was proud to be a friend to such fine families as the Jensens and Braithwaites. He said Harold had always impressed him as a high type individual and that he always held him in high regard. He said Beth has always been a good church worker and always has been very friendly. He commended Harolf for his service to his fellow men. By request of Beth, her read a poem, "A Little Patch Of Blue." Bishop Peterson closed his remarks by wishing Beth courage and success in rearing her child.

Bishop Ward Magleby spoke briefly and said the family of Harold probably fell that the war has just ended for Harold. He said suffering such as Harold endured at home and in the Veterans' hospital in recent months is ofen hard to explain, but said he believed such things must certainly add to one's blessings from life on earth.

"In The Garden" was sung by Venice Braithwaite and Ruby Nielson, accompanied by Jane Anderson. The benediction was by Kay Jensen and the dedication of the grave was by Alma C. Peterson. Prayer in the home before the services was by Osmond Olsen.

Full military rites were accorded their fallen comrade by American Legion Post 31 of Manti, Legion Commander Leslie Anderson and Legion Chaplain Alma C. Peterson, in charge. The firing squad was commanded by Stanley Jorgensen."
