Mary Joann Braithwaite Wegkamp
Mary Joann Braithwaite Wegkamp passed away January 17, 2000 in Fairfax, Virginia.
She was born November 16, 1931 in Manti, Utah to Claude and Ruth Curtis Braithwaite. She married Larry Wegkamp in 1951, and divorced in 1979. They have three sons, Paul, Karl, Dale.
Joann graduated from Manti High School and studied at Snow College, Utah State University and the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She was a graduate of the Gourmet Cooking School of Denver. She studied and practiced massage therapy for many years; working at Snowbird, Salt Lake City, and the Green Valley Resort in St. George, along with private practice.
She was a member of the LDS Church and taught many years in the Sunday School, MIA and Relief Society. She traveled extensively in her later life and spent many years in Logan, Utah, Las Vegas, Nevada, St. George, Utah, New England and the Washington D.C./Virginia area. She was an avid and prolific reader with a great thirst for knowledge, which spanned many disciplines, cultures, and religions. She was active in the ERA movement in the 70's and served as a volunteer in the Alliance for the Varied Arts while living in Logan. She loved the mountains and the desert and both the simplicity and complexity of Native American cultures and their sensitivity to nature and God.
In this context, she wished for a simple memorial service in the desert and to "feel the wind in her hair." She cared deeply about her family and friends.
She is survived by her sons, Paul (Debbie), Heathsville, Virginia; Karl (Karen), St. George, Utah; and
Dale (Lisa) Fredericksburg, Virginia; nine g/children; sisters, Karen Horn, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Verna Garrett, Douglasville, Georgia.
