Former Resident Returned Home For Burial Near Temple
Brought back to her hometown for burial in the cemetery near the temple where she had done so much work, was Mrs. Rose Ellen Walker Braithwaite, 84. Funeral servies were conducted Wednesday in the Center Ward Chapel by Bishop Claude Braithwaite.
Mrs. Braithwaite died Sunday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Cheever, Payson, of causes incident to age.
She was born in Mt. Pleasant, May 14, 1865, a daughter of James and Margaret Mein Walker. She came to Manti when 12 years of age and had lived here since until four years ago when she went to live at Payson.
She had been an active worker in the LDS Church, serving as a Relief Society visiting teacher for 42 years and also doing much temple work.
She was married to William Braithwaite, March 21, 1882, in the Salt Lake Endowment House. He died several years ago. Survivingin are two daughtrs, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson and Mrs. Cheever, both of Payson; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Vioet Palmer, Marysvale.
Preliminary and postlude musica at the funeral was by Mrs. George Pederson and the opening son, "Oh My Father, " was by the Center Ward Ladies Chorus, Mrs. Della Cox, accompanist. Prayers were by Mrs. A. W. Tuttle and A. H. Henrie and the grave was dedicated by George A. Cheever, Payson.
Other musica at the funeral included a duet, "Beyong The Years, " by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fallows of Clearfield; a vocal solo, "Hold Thou My Hand, Dear Lord, " by Robert Finch of Payson, and a vocal solo, "God Understands," by Irene Provstgaard, all accompanied by Clara Johnson of Payson. The closing song was "Jesus Lover of My Soul," by the chorus.
Ray P. Lund, the first speaker, quoted from scripture and then told how Mrs. Braithwaite had given unselfish devotion to friends and neighbors, that she was not concerned about worldly goods but had devoted her life to living the principles of the gospel.
Mrs. Pratt Allred told of Mrs. Braithwaite's devotion to Relief Society work, of her regular attendance at Sunday School and her work in the temple, her nursing activities and her devotion to the people of the community.
President L. R. Anderson also spoke of Mrs. Braithwaite's devotion to the community and told of her pioneer ancestors. He told how her folks had come from England because of the missionary work of the church.
Bishop Claude Braithwaite in closing remarks, paid tribute to "Aunt Rose," telling how much the Braithaite family thought of her and the confidence, love and respect they had for her and how kind she had been to them."

Rose Ellen Walker Braithwaite, is the second wife of William Braithwaite (1842-1909). Ellen attended her first school at Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She trained to take part in the daily work around the home, which included carding the wool, then spinning it, after which it was used for knitting of stockings and to weave the cloth for dresses, etc.
She married William Braithwaite and because of trouble due to polygamy, Rose was forced to take her little two year old daughter, Rebecca, to live with her fahter and mother who had moved to Huntington, Utah. In the spring of 1899 she had the misfortune to lose the sight in her left eye.
She was left a widow at the age of 41, and it was after her husband's death that she became a practical nurse.
She was a member of the L.D.S. Church. She was a Relief Society teacher and regular attendant at Sunday School and Sacrament Meeting. She worked in the Manti Temple. She belonged to the "Checker Club."

Remarks- A detailed search of all the baptisms in the entire Kendal Parish which consists of 28 chapels all Thomas Braithwaite's born in the time period of 1820-1826 revealved only two Thomas Braithwaites born in the Kendal parish. I found one Thomas Braithwaite in the 1841 census living with his parents, so I concluded that the one mentioned the burials in the parish register was ours. It was a matter of elimination."
