Broughs of Lancashire, England

Although there are several well-known "Brough" named villages and towns in England and Scotland, none are located in the county of Lancashire, England. However, there have been a number of "Brough" families who have resided in Lancashire since the 1700's, although most of these families appear to have originated in other counties--such as Cheshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire.
For example, Charles William Brough (1883-1918) was born in 1883 in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, as the second son of James Brough and Anne Reeves; but the ancestry of his father, James Brough, goes back to the early Broughs of Leek, Staffordshire, in the 1600's. Unfortunately, Charles William Brough was killed in 1918 during World War I (see picture below).

Another "Brough" family who lived in Lancashire was that John Brough and Alice Greenhalgh, who were marred on 25 December 1823 in Bury, Lancashire, and who had five children: Jane (b.1825), Jonathan (b.1827), John (chr.1829), Anne (chr.1832), and Israel (b.1837). Interestingly, their second son and third child, John Brough, was christened on 20 September 1829 at St. Mary, Birch, Hopwood, Lancashire. Unfortunately, the church of St. Mary, Birch, no longer exists, but can be seen in the following pictures.
