Research Note: According to Selina Brough's marriage document of 1859 (FHL Film # 1040780), she and her husband, Simon Johnson, are listed as being from "Chell Heath". In the 1800's, "Chell Heath" was a township in Wolstanton parish--about two miles north of Burslem. Chell Heath contained the Wolstanton and Burslem workshouses, and its inhabitants were chiefly potterers and colliers--or coal miners. According to the 1841 and 1851 Census, Selina's father, Thomas Brough, was a "Potter", and in the 1861 Census, Selina was also identified as a "Potter". Although Selina is not listed in the 1841 or 1851 Census, it is likely that she was not born until after the 1841 Census--as the 1871 and 1881 Census lists her as being born in 1842, and it is possible that she was accidently left off the 1851 census report (for one reason or another) or was away from home--possibly residing with relatives or intransit--when the census was taken. (Selina is listed with her husband, not her parents, in the 1861 Census--as she married Simon Johnson in 1859.) Like all censuses, the 1851 British Census contains numerous errors--including "copying errors and falsification of information, either intentionally or unintentionally." (Here is some information about the 1851 Census people should keep in mind: "Enumeration forms were distributed to all households a couple of days before census night and the complete forms were collected the next day. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 30 March 1851 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house. People who were traveling or living abroad were supposed to be enumerated at the location where they spent the night on the census night." The 1861 Census lists Simon Johnson as about 23 years old and born in Weeton, Staffordshire, England. The 1871 Census lists Simon Johnson as about 32 years old. The 1881 Census lists Simon Johnson as about 43 years old and born in Weston, Staffordshire.
