The 1841 Census lists Thomas Brough as about 40 years old. However, the 1841 Census enumerators generally "rounded down to the nearest multiple of five" those people who listed themselves as being "over fifteen" years of age. Therefore, a man (such as Thomas Brough) who could have been 44 years of age would have been listed as only being 40 years old.
The 1851 Census lists Thomas Brough as about 42 years old and born in High Offley, Staffordshire. However, the listing (or copying by the enumerators) of Thomas Brough's age is likely an error--for he should have been listed as being about "52" years old. Like all censuses, the 1851 British Census contains numerous errors--including "copying errors and falsification of information, either intentionally or unintentionally." (Here is some information about the 1851 Census people should keep in mind: "Enumeration forms were distributed to all households a couple of days before census night and the complete forms were collected the next day. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 30 March 1851 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house. People who were traveling or living abroad were supposed to be enumerated at the location where they spent the night on the census night." As of December 2006, Thomas Brough could not be located in the 1861 Census.
Research Note: In December 2006, RBFO researchers could not find Thomas Brough listed in the High Offley Parish Register (FHL book # 942.46/H2 K29r, which covers the period 1659 to 1812). RBFO researchers are now checking the records of parishes located near High Offley, such as Knightley and Gnosall. Knightley is only about two travel miles southeast of High Offley, and Gnosall is only about 4.3 travel miles southeast of High Offley. (Gnosall parish records are available at the FHL-SLC as: Bishop's Transcripts: 1687-1809, 417194 Item 2; and/or book: 942.46, B4pr, Vol.12.) Interestingly, the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program), lists a Thomas Brough who was christened on 19 February 1797 (as the son of John Brough and Jane) in Colwich, Staffordshire--and Colwich is less than 19 travel miles from High Offley.
The 1841 Census lists Hannah Galley Brough as about 40 years old. However, the 1841 Census enumerators generally "rounded down to the nearest multiple of five" those people who listed themselves as being "over fifteen" years of age. Therefore, a woman (such as Hannah Galley Brough) who could have been 44 years of age would have been listed as only being 40 years old.
The 1851 Census lists Hannah Galley Brough as about 32 years old and born in Colemore, Cheshire. As of December 2006, RBFO researches could not find Hannah Galley Brough in the 1861 Census. However, the listing (or copying by the enumerators) of Hannah Galley Brough's age is likely an error--for she should have been listed as being about "52" years old. For example, Hannah's daughter, Eleanor Brough, is listed in the same (1851) census as being about 20 years old--which would have made her mother, Hannah (listed as being about 32 years old), only about 12 years old when she had Eleanor--which was her fifth child! Needless to say, like all censuses the 1851 British Census contains numerous errors--including "copying errors and falsification of information, either intentionally or unintentionally." (Here is some information about the 1851 Census people should keep in mind: "Enumeration forms were distributed to all households a couple of days before census night and the complete forms were collected the next day. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 30 March 1851 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house.
