The christening of a John Brough is listed in the online Carsington parish register at: http://www.dfhs.org.uk/?id=carsington, which states that he was christened on 11 February 1595 and that his parents were Henry and Ellen Brough.

The marriage of "John Broughe" and "Elizabeth Stone" is listed in the parish register of Carsington, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1042095, Item #8), which states that they were married on 15 July 1621 in Carsington, and that "John Broughe [was the] s[on of] Henrie Broughe [who was] deceased [and that John was] a servant [of] Elizabeth Stone [who was the] widow of Robt Stone [who was] deceased and [that he married] Sara Loan h[is] w[ife who was] the d[aughter] of Ralph Loan of Newfold".

The burial of "John Brough" is listed in the parish register of Carsington, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1042095, Items #9-10), which state that "John Brough" was buried on "17 June 1689.  Also, the burial of John Brough is listed in the online Carsington parish register at: http://www.dfhs.org.uk/?id=carsington, which states that he was buried on 17 June 1689 in Carsington.

In December 2013, members of the Research Committee of the Brough Family Organization carefully reviewed the parish register of Carsington (FHL Film # 1042095, Item #8), and determined that "John Broughe" was christened on "18 January 1595/1596" in Carsington, as: "John Broughe s[on of] Henry Broughe [a] labourer and Ellen his wife".

Research Note:  During the 1600's, a number of Brough individuals and families who lived in the agricultural areas of northern Staffordshire moved to the towns/cities of Trentham, Longton, Burslem and Stoke-upon-Trent.  It appears that John Broughe's son, Henry Brough (b.abt.1630-1640), moved from the agricultural and mining area of Carsington, Derbyshire during the 1600's and eventually settled in Trentham, Staffordshire.  (The travel distance between Carsington and Trentham is about 37 miles.).  The genealogical connection (shown herein) between John Broughe, who was christened in 1595 in Carsington, and Henry Brough who was  born in Carsington between 1630-1640 but who died in Trentham in 1680/1681, is largely based on radius searches of available parish records and known family patronymics.


Sara Loan

The marriage of "John Broughe" and "Elizabeth Stone" is listed in the parish register of Carsington, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1042095, Item #8), which states that they were married on 15 July 1621 in Carsington, and that "John Broughe [was the] s[on of] Henrie Broughe [who was] deceased [and that John was] a servant [of] Elizabeth Stone [who was the] widow of Robt Stone [who was] deceased and [that he married] Sara Loan h[is] w[ife who was] the d[aughter] of Ralph Loan of Newfold".

"Robert Stone" and his wife "Elizabethe" are listed in FamilySearch (via FHL Film # 1042095) as being the parents of "Rose Stone" who married "Arthure Mower" on 28 August 1620 in Carsington, Derbyshire.

John Broughe (chr. 1595) is described in the Carsington Parish Registers (FHL Film # 1042095, Items 8-18), as "a servant" of "Elizabeth Stone", the "widow of Robt Stone".  Interestingly, his great-grandson, John Brough (chr.1692) was also a servant to Lord Gower of Trentham Hall, Trentham, Staffordshire.


Thomas Broughe

Thomas Broughe is listed as the father of John Broughe (chr. 1600) in the Carsington Parish Registers, which can be found online via the Internet at: http://www.dfhs.org.uk/?id=carsington.

Historical Note:  "Thomas Broughe" signs and is listed as a "Churchwarden" in the 1611 in the parish records of Carsington, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1042095, Item #8).

In the 1891 Census, Stephen Churches is listed as being about 61 years old (born about 1830), born in Littleworth, Gloucestershire, and liviing in Caterham, Surrey, as a "Retired Draper".

In the 1901 Census, Stephen Churches is listed as being about 71 years old (born about 1830), born in Littleworth, Gloucestershire, and residing in Caterham, Surrey, where he was "living on own means".

The death of "Stephen Churches" is listed in the online Principal Probate Registry (via Ancestry.com), which states the following: "Churches, Stephen, of Amberley, Caterham, Surrey, died 10 February 1907. Administration (with Will): London, 28 October, to Urania Elizabeth Brough Churches, spinster. Effects: £826 16s 3d.  Former grant May 1907."

In July 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate for Margaret Baker Brough, which stated that she was born on 8 December 1847 in Kenton, Devon, England, and that her father was William Brough, a School Master, and her mother was "Elizabeth Simmons Brough formerly Baker".

In the 1851 Census, Margaret Brough is listed as being about 3 years old (born about 1848) and born in Kenton, Devon, England.

In the 1861 Census, Margaret Brough is identified as "Margaret B. Brough" and was then about 13 years old (born about 1848) and born in Kenton, Devon, England.

In the 1871 Census, Margaret B. Brough is listed as being about 20 years old (born about 1851).

In the 1881 Census, Margaret B. Churches is listed as being about 33 years old (born about 1848), born in Devon, and living with her husband, Stephen Churches, in Lancashire.

In the 1891 Census, Margaret B. Churches is listed as being about 43 years old (born about 1848), born in Devon, and living with her husband, Stephen Churches, in Caterham, Surrey.

In July 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate for William Stanley Brough, which stated that he was born on 11 March 1849 at "Holly Bush Hill", Hampstead, Middlesex, England, and that his father was William Brough, a School Master, and his morther was "Elizabeth Simmons Brough formerly Baker".

In October 2009, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of William Stanley Brough, which stated that he died of "Malignant disease of Liver" on 23 May 1910 at Woodville, Brays Green, Little Missenden, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England, and that he was about "60 years" old (born about 1850) and an "Accountant", and that the informant at his death was "B. E. Brough, son, present at the death".  

In the 1851 Census, William Brough is listed as being about 2 years old (born about 1849) and born in Hampstead, Middlesex, England.  

In the 1861 Census, William Brough is identified as "William S. Brough" who was then about 12 years old (born about 1849) and born in Hampstead, Middlesex, England.

In the 1871 Census, William Brough is listed as being about 22 years old (born about 1849), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, and residing as an unmarried "Lodger" and working as a "Clerk" in Hampstead.

In the 1881 Census, William S. Brough is listed as being about 32 years old (born about 1849), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and working as an "Accountant", while residing with his wife and two of his young sons at: 4 Heath Mount, London, Middlesex.

In the 1891 Census, William S. Brough is listed as being about 42 years old (born about 1849), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and working as a "Mercantile Clerk", while residing with his wife and their four unmarried sons at: 4 Child Hill Lane, Childs Hill, Middlesex.

In the 1901 Census, William S. Brough is listed as being about 52 years old (born about 1849), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and working as a "Commercial Clerk", while residing with his wife and two of their unmarried sons at: 4 Hermitage Hills, Childs Hill, Middlesex.

Maria Clayton

In July 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Maria Clayton from England, which stated that she was born on 2 December 1853 at "3 Prospect Place" in Hampstead, Middlesex, England, and that her father was William Clayton, a Gardener, and her mother was "Maria Clayton formerly Morgan".

In the 1881 Census, Maria is listed as being about 27 years old (born about 1854), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and residing with her husband and two of her young sons at: 4 Heath Mount, London, Middlesex.

In the 1891 Census, Maria is listed as being about 37 years old (born about 1854), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and residing with her husband and their four unmarried sons at: 4 Child Hill Lane, Childs Hill, Middlesex.

In the 1901 Census, Maria is listed as being about 48 years old (born about 1853), born in Hampstead, Middlesex, married and residing with her husband and two of their unmarried sons at: 4 Hermitage Hills, Childs Hill, Middlesex.

Ancestry.com lists (in its British Columbia Death Index: 1872-1979), "Maria Brough" as having died on 9 August 1937 in Bradner (Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada) at the age of 83 years (born about 1854).

In February 2010, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of Maria Brough from British Columbia, Canada, which stated that she died on 9 August 1937 of Hypostatic Pneumonia and Cerebral Thrombosis, and that she was born on 2 December 1853 in Hampstead, England, and that her parents were William Clayton and Maria Morgan.

An old-time resident of Bradner, Mrs. Maria Brough, passed away on August 9th, at the age of 83 years.  She was native of Hampstead, England, and is survived by four sons, S. Brough of Victoria, B. Brough, Vancouver, N. Brough and R. Brough at home, also by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Mrs. Brough had been a devoted worker for St. Margaret’s Anglican church since it was built, and presided over the Ladies’ Guild of the church for several years.  The funeral was held on Thursday from St. Margaret’s church, Bradner, to Hazelwood cemetery, Rev. Mr. Henderson officiating.  Henderson Funeral Home had care of the arrangements.  The pall-bearers were R. Donaldson, T. Baker, N. Auburn, G. Loach, G. Earle, H. Hutchinson.

B. Brough, and Sarah Ellen Perel.


George Durling Brough

The birth and christening of "George Durling Brough" is listed in the parish register of Allhallows London Wall, London (via Ancestry.com), which states that he was born on 26 December 1856 and christened on 25 January 1857 at Allhallows London Wall, London, and that his parents were Thomas Brough and Sarah, of 16 Union Court, and that Thomas Brough was a "Railway Ticket Examiner".

In the 1861 Census, George Brough is listed as being about 4 years old (born about 1857), born in Middlesex-City, Middlesex, and residing with his parents, Thomas and Sarah Brough, in St. Saviour Southwark, Surrey.

In the 1871 Census, George Brough is listed as being about 14 years old (born about 1857), born in the "City of London, Middlesex", working as a "Junior Clerk", and residing with his parents, Thomas and Sarah Brough, and siblings at: 66 King Street, St. Saviour Southwark, Middlesex.  

In the 1881 Census, George D. Brough is listed as being about 24 years old (born about 1857), born in Middlesex City, Middlesex, probably widowed (although his marital status is not listed) and working as a "Clerk [for an] Omnibus Comp[any]", while residing near his parents and siblings but as a "Lodger" with a family (the Caines) at: 9 Brunswick Villas in Middlesex City, Middlesex.

In the 1891 Census, George Brough is listed as being about 34 years old (born about 1857), born in Camberwell, London, a "widower" and working as a "Commercial Clerk", while residing with his father, Thomas Brough, and sister Elizabeth in Camberwell, London.

In the 1901 Census, George Brough is listed as being about 44 years old (born about 1857), born in London, a "widower" and working as a "Clerk Commercial", while residing with his father, Thomas Brough, and siblings, Elizabeth and Thomas, in Camberwell, London.

The death of "George Durling Brough" is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that his death was registered in October-December 1908 in Wandsworth district, Greater London, and that he died when he was "51" years old (born about 1857).

The burial of "George Durling Brough" is listed in the online records for Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, Lambeth, Surrey, England (via Ancestry.com and entitled "Burials in the Year 1908 in the South Metropolitan Cemetery"), which states that he was buried on 27 November 1908; that he was of "Eversfield, Thurlow Road, Clapham"; that he died when he was "51 years" old (born about 1857) and that his burial ceremony was performed by "Henry Pitt, Vicar of St. Marys, Southwark".

Historical Note about George Durling Brough (researched and written by Alison B. Allred on 15 October 2013):  "In the 1841 Census, the grandmother of George Durling Brough, Charlotte Stanley Brough, was living in the parish of St. Luke, Chelsea  (London), Middlesex, with her apparent daughter, Charlotte--age 12 years old, and a George Durling--age 12 years old.  I find it interesting that the second son of Charlotte, Thomas Brough--age 28--was a footman in the 1851 Census and residing in Long Ditton, Surrey, and that a "George Durling"--age 25--was also a footman residing in Marylebone, St. Pancras, Surrey.  Thomas Brough named his first son George Durling Brough.  Why would he give him such a name if there was not some family member or friend who also had such a name?  I feel that it is possible--if not likely--that Thomas Brough and George Durling knew each other and were good friends, and that this is why Thomas Brough named his first son George Durling Brough."

Marion Jessie Elizabeth Welch

The christening of Marion Jessy Elizabeth Welch is listed in the IGI and New Family Search (PI# MMNP-CY7).

In February 2010, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of "Marion Jefsy Elizabeth Welch" from England, which stated that she was born on 21 November 1850 at 41 Nottingham Place, Stepney, Middlesex, and that her father was Henry Welch, a Cabinet Maker, and that her mother was "Sarah Amelia Welch formerly Gabriel".

The death of Marion Jessie E. Brough is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that she died when she was 29 years old (born about 1851) and that her death was registered during April-June 1880 in the district of St. Saviour Southwark, Surrey.

The burial of "Marion Jessie Elizabeth Brough" is listed in the online records for Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, Lambeth, Surrey, England (via Ancestry.com and entitled "Burials in the Year 1880 in the South Metropolitan Cemetery"), which states that she was buried on 17 April 1880; that she was of "97 Grosvenor Park, Camberwell; that she died when she was "29 years" old (born about 1851) and that her burial ceremony was performed by "Saml. M. Mayhew, Vicar of St.Pauls, Bermondsay".

The marriage of "George Durling Brough" and "Marion Jessie Elizabeth Welch" is listed in the parish record of St. Mary, Newington (via Ancestry.com), which states that the marriage was by Banns and took place on 26 July 1879; that George Durling Brough was of full age and a Bachelor and Clerk of 7 Brunswick Villas, and that his father was Thomas Brough, a Clerk; and that Marion Jessie Elizabeth Welch was of full age and a Spinster of St. Johns, E. Dulwich, and that her father was Henry Welch, a Professor of Music.  The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Brough, Elizabeth Brough, and Emma Brough.

The marriage banns of George Durling Brough and Marion Jessie Elizabeth Welch is listed in the parish record of St. Mary, Newington (via Ancestry.com), which states that the marriage was by Banns and was finalized (on the 3rd Sunday) on 22 June 1879, and that George Durling Brough was a Bachelor of "this Parish", and that Marion Jessie Elizabeth Welch was a Spinster of Peckham.

In the 1891 Census, George Brough is listed as being about 34 years old (born about 1857), born in Camberwell, London, a "widower"--so he was previously married (sometime between the 1881 and 1891 Census)--and working as a "Commercial Clerk", while residing with his father, Thomas Brough, and sister Elizabeth in Camberwell, London.

Emily Baldwin

In the 1891 Census, Emily (Brough) is listed as being about 31 years old (born about 1860), born in Bermondsey, London (Greater London), married and working as a "School Mistress", while residing with her husband, Thomas Brough, and their two young children, at: 139 Queens Road, Hastings, Sussex.  Also residing in the same household of Thomas and Emily Brough is Emily's mother, Elizbaeth Baldwin (54 years old).

In the 1901 Census, Emily (Brough) is listed as being about 40 years old (born about 1861), born in Southwick, London, married and working as a "Teacher - Elementary", while residing with her husband, Thomas Brough, in the home of her father-in-law, Thomas Brough, in Camberwell, London.

In the 1911 Census, Emily (Brough) is listed as being about 50 years old (born about 1861), born in "St. James, Bermondsey, S.E." London, married for 27 years (married in about 1884), the mother of two children--one living and one deceased, working as a Head Teacher for the County Council, and residing with her husband, Thomas Robert Brough, at: 134 Thurleigh Road, Clapham Common, S.W., London.

The marriage of Thomas Robert Brough and Emily Baldwin is listed in the parish register of St. Mary Magdalene, Southwark (via Ancestry.com), which states that the marriage was by Banns on 26 July 1884, and that Thomas Robert Brough was 26 years old (born about 1858), a Bachelor and "Clerk to the Omnibus Corp" of 7 Brunswick Villa, and that his father was Thomas Brough, a Clerk; and that Emily Baldwin was 24 years old (born about 1860), a Spinster of Clarena Street (School House), and that her father was George Baldwin, Deceased.  The marriage was witnessed by Henry William Clarke and Annie Baldwin.

Francis Harmer Manby

In February 2010, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Francis Harmer Manby from England, which stated that he was born on 2 February 1846 at Earl Street, Coventry, Warwickshire, and that his father was George Manby, a Chemist and Druggist, and that his mother was "Hannah Manby formerly Harmer".

In the 1891 Census, "Frank Manby" is listed as being 45 years old (born about 1846), born in Coventry, Warwickshire, married and working as a "Account[ant] Actuary", and residing with his wife, Ethel E. S., and their two young sons, at: Wensum House, 1 Napier Avenue, Fulham, London.  Also, Frank Manby's parents, George and Hannah Manby, are listed as "visitor[s]" in Frank's household at the time the census was taken.

In the 1901 Census, "Frank Manby" is listed as being 55 years old (born about 1846), born in Coventry, Warwickshire, married and working as an "Accountant", and residing with his wife, Ethel, and their two sons and a daughter, at: 1 Napier Avenue, Fulham, London.

In the 1911 Census, "Frank Manby" is listed as being 64 years old (born about 1847), born in Coventry, Warwickshire, a "Widower" and "Pensioned Clerk", and residing with his three children, at: West View, Heene Road, Worthing [in West Sussex].

In the 1891 Census, E. (Brough) is listed as being about 25 years old (born about 1866), born in Camberwell, London, married and residing with her husband, F. Brough, and their one-year old daughter at: 117 Croften Road, Camberwell, London.

In the 1901 Census, Emma (Brough) is listed as being about 33 years old (born about 1868), born in Camberwell, London, married and residing with her husband, Francis D. Brough, and their two children at: 119 Croften Road, Camberwell, London.

In the 1911 Census, Emma (Brough) is listed as being about 45 years old (born about 1866), born in Norwood, London, a "Widow", the mother of three children--two of whom were living and one deceased, and was  residing at: 40 Kennaryson (?) Park Road, London.

Research Note:  In March-April 2010, the RBFO ordered two birth certificates from the GRO in England for Emma Elizabeth Clarke: both registered in Camberwell District, with one in Volume 1d, Page 378, and the other in Volume 1d, Page 578.  Unfortunately, when they arrived they were of the same girl: Emma Elizabeth Brough, who was born on 22 March 1867 at 7 Pine Apple Terrace, Hill Street, Peckham, Surrey, England, and whose parents were Edmund Launcelot Clarke, a Boot Rivetter, and Emma Elizabeth Clarke "formerly Adnum". However, according to the marriage record of Francis Drake Brough and Emma Elizabeth Clarke, Emma's father was Henry William Clarke, a Gentleman.
