John William Brough

In December 2014, the Brough Family Organization obtained a copy of the birth certificate of "John William Brough" from England, which stated that he was born on 18 September 1858 in "Mill Town, Glossop", and that his mother was "Ann Brough" of "Mill Town, Glossop".  The birth certificate does not list the name of the father of John William Brough.  

The christening of "John William Brough" is listed in the parish register of Glossop, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1786026, Item #1, page 160), which states that he was christened on 14 November 1858 in Glossop, Derbyshire, and that his supposed parents were "John & Ann Brough" of "Mill Town" and that John Brough was a "Shoe Maker".  However, from the birth and marriage certificate of John William Brough, and from related census reports, we know that John and Ann Brough were actually the grandparents of John William Brough.

The marriage of "William Brough" and "Mary Clayton" is listed in the parish register of Chapel En Le Frith, Derbyshire (FHL Film # 1041916, Item # 6, page 153), which states that they were married by Banns on 23 October 1882 in Chapel En Le Frith, Derbyshire, England; that William Brough was 24 years old (born about 1858) and a "Bachelor" and "Labourer" of "Barmoor Clough" (which is about ten travel miles south of Glossop) and that his father was "John Brough" a "Labourer"; and that Mary Clayton was 24 years old (born about 1858) and a "Spinster" of "Barmoor Clough" and that her father was "William Clayton" a "Quarryman".  The marriage was witnessed by William Henry Warhurst and Martha Warhurst.

The  marriage of "John William Bruff" and "Margaret Barnes" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Godley cum Newton Green, Cheshire (FHL Film# 2186937), which states that they were married by Banns on 27 April 1885; that John William Bruff was 26 years old (born about 1859), and a Bachelor and "Spinner" of Glossop, and that he personally signed his name as "John William Bruff"; and that Margaret Barnes was 22 years old (born about 1863), and a Spinster of Glossop, and that her father was Anthony Barnes, a Labourer.  The marriage was witnessed by John Heywood and Ann Eliza Wrigley.  Note: The name of the father of John William Bruff is not listed on his marriage certificate.

Bruff" is listed as being 3 years old (born about 1858), born in Glossop, Derbyshire, and residing with his then married mother, Ann (Bruff) Cox (age 22), and her husband, Edward Cox (age 25), in the home of his grandparents, John and Nancy Bruff, in Mill Town, Glossop, Derbyshire.

In the 1871 Census, "John W. Cox" is listed as being 12 years old (born about 1859), born in Glossop, Derbyshire, and residing with his mother, Ann (Brough) Cox (age 33), and his stepfather, Edward Cox (age 35), in the home of his widowed grandmother, Ann Brough (age 65), in Mill Street, Glossop, Derbyshire.

In the 1881 Census, "William Bruff" is listed as being 22 years old (born about 1859), born in Glossop, Derbyshire, unmarried and working as a "Cotton Piecer", and residing with his widowed mother, Ann Cox (age 40), at: 2 Mill Street, Glossop, Derbyshire.

In the 1891 Census, "John Wm Brough" is listed as being 32 years old (born about 1859), born in Glossop, Derbyshire, married and working as a "Cotton Spinner", and residing with his wife, Margaret (age 28), and their three children (Sarah--age 5; Ann--age 3; and John--age 7 months), in Glossop, Derbyshire.

In the 1901 Census, "William Brough" is listed as being 42 years old (born about 1859), born in Glossop, Derbyshire, married and working as a "Cotton Spinner", and residing with his wife, Margaret (age 38), and their six children (Sarah--age 14, Ann--age 13, John--age 10, Harry--age 8; Albert--age 6; and Hannah--age 2), in Glossop, Derbyshire.

The death of "John William Brough" is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that his death was registered in July-September 1906 in Glossop district, Derbyshire, and that he died when he was "47" years old (born about 1859).


Mary Elizabeth Clayton

The birth certificate of "Mary Elizabeth Clayton" was obtained from England by the George Clayton Family Organization in August 2018.  This birth certificate stated that Mary Elizabeth Clayton was born on 18 September 1858 at the "Workhouse" in "Lowleighton [Low Leighton] Ollerset [Ollersett]" in the "District" of "Hayfield and Glossop" in the "Counties of Derby and Chester", England.  Mary's father is not listed on her birth certificate but her mother is listed as "Sarah Clayton" of the "Workhouse" in "Lowleighton Ollerset".

In the 1871 Census, "Mary E. Clayton" is listed as being 13 years old (born about 1858), born in Disley, Derbyshire (which is about three miles from Low Leighton--where Mary was christened in 1858), and residing was an "Adopted daughter" in the home of Newrod Tinker (age 49) and Betty Tinker (age 51), in Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire (which is about ten miles from Low Leighton, Derbyshire--where Mary was christened in 1858).

The christening of "Noah John Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 1751991, Item # 4, page 21), which states that he was christened on 9 May 1883 in Chapel En Le Frith, Derbyshire, and that his parents were "William Brough" and "Mary".

The birth of "John Noah Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that his birth was registered in April-June 1883 in Chapel En Le Frith district, Derbyshire, and that his mother's surname was "Clayton".

The death of "John Noah Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that his death was registered in July-September 1883 in Chapel En Le Frith district, Derbyshire, and that he died when he was "0" years old (or under the age of 1 year old).


John William Brough

In the 1841 Census, "Ann Brough" is listed as being 2 years old (born about 1839), born in Derbyshire, and residing with her probable parents, John and Ann Brough, and three probable siblings, in Green Hill, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

In the 1851 Census, "Anne Brough" is listed as being 13 years old (born about 1838), born in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, working as a "Frame Tenter", and residing with her parents, John and Anne Brough, and four siblings, in Cross Cliffe, Whitfield, Glossop, Derbyshire.
