George Brough

In March 2013, the BFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of George Brough from ScotlandsPeople, which stated that he was born on 4 January 1892 at "6 hr 15 m. AM" at 26 Arthur Street in Glasgow; that his father was Robert Brough, a Shipping Clerk, and his mother was Margaret Brough formerly "Trapp"--who were married on 21 November 1888 in Falkirk.  The informant of his birth was "Robert Brough [his] Father".  

In the 1901 Census, George Brough is listed as being 9 years old (born about 1892), born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and residing with his parents, Robert and Margaret Brough, and four siblings, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

In the 1911 Census, George Brough is listed as being 19 years old (born about 1892), born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, single and working as a "Marine Engineer [and] Student Part Time", and residing with his married father, Robert Brough, and two siblings, at: 48 Overnewton Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

George Brough is listed in "Military Service" during 1918-1921, according to the "United Kingdom, Merchant Navy Seamen Records, 1835-1941" (via FamilySearch).

"George Brough" is listed in the "Commonwealth War Graves Commission" website (www.cwgc.org), which states that he was a "Chief Engineer Officer" on the S. S. Kanbe in the Merchant Navy in World War II, that he died on 8 May 1943 at 50 years old (born about 1892), is listed in the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England, and that he was the "Son of Robert and Margaret Brough, husband of Thomasina Brough, of Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire".

"George Brough" is listed in New FamilySearch, PI#: LZT3-D5J.

Research Note:  According to the website "http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?37417", the S. S. Kanbe was sunk by a German torpedo on 9 May 1943, resulting in the death of 66 crew members.

"Kanbe SS was a British Passenger/Cargo Steamer of 6,244 tons built in 1941 by William Denny & Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton, Yard No 1357 for the British & Burmese Steam Navigation Company, Glasgow. She was powered by a steam, triple expansion engine of 320 nhp, giving 11 knots. On the 9th May 1943 she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-123 whilst as a straggler in Convoy TS-38 carrying a general cargo including 3,500 tons of copper on route from Alexandria - Takoradi - Freetown for the UK Her master, Capt J Burke and 65 of the crew were killed."

"SS Kanbe was built in 1941 and was pressed into service as a convoy ship protecting cargo for the British war effort. She was known as a straggler; a ship that wasn’t very powerful and wasn’t well armed, at the back of the convoy. She was a sitting duck.  In 1943, en route from Alexandria to the UK, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-123, commanded by 24 year old Horst von Schroeter. There were 66 crew on the SS Kanbe; only a few survived. John O’Donnell, a 24 year old from Birchip in northern Victoria, died that night. Von Schroeter survived the war and later become a Commander of NATO Navel forces."

The birth of Robert Brough is listed in birth registers for Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland (via FHL Film # 294817, #479-1) which states that he was born on 2 January 1863 at 11:30 AM in Bainsford, Falkirk, as the son of Robert Brough, a Seaman Merchant Force", and Agnes Gillespie.

In the 1871 Census, Robert Brough is listed as being 8 years old (born about 1863), born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, and residing with his parents, Robert and Agnes Brough, and two brothers, in Grange Street, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

In the 1881 Census, Robert Brough is listed as being 18 years old (born about 1863), born in Bainsford, Stirlingshire, unmarried and working as a "Shippin Clerk", and residing with his parents, Robert and Agnes Brough, and three brothers, in Grange Street, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

In the 1901 Census, Robert Brough is listed as being 38 years old (born about 1863), born in Bainsford, Stirlingshire, Scotland, married and working as a Shipping Clerk, and residing with his wife, Margaret, and their five children, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

In the 1911 Census, Robert Brough is listed as being 48 years old (born about 1863), born in Bainsford, Stirlingshire, Scotland, married (although his wife is not listed with him in the census), working as a "Warfinger [in] Shipping", and residing with his three children (George, Agnes and William), at: 48 Overnewton Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.


Margaret Trapp

The christening of Margaret Trapp is listed in FamilySearch (via FHL Film # 6035516), which states that she was christened on 28 April 1864 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and that her parents were George Trapp and Ann Walker.

In the 1901 Census, Margaret (Brough) is listed as being 36 years old (born about 1865), born in Laurceton, Stirlingshire, Scotland, married and residing with her husband, Robert Brough, and their five children, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

"Sidney Brough" is listed in the "Commonwealth War Graves Commission" website (www.cwgc.org), which states that he was a "Leading Aircraftman" in the "Royal Air Force (Auxillary Air Forcce)" in World War II, that he died on 13 February 1943 at 41 years old (born about 1902), is listed in the Hull Northern Cemetery in Yorkshire, England, and was the "Son of Ben and Harriet Brough, of Hull; husband of Edna May Brough, of Hull". Note: According to a family relative "Sid was killed in WW2 when he fell off a weather boat in the Humber Estuary in Hull.  He was a radio operator and fell overboard whilst launching an air baloon."

In the 1911 Census, "Edna May Brough" is listed as being 7 years old (born about 1904), born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, and residing with her parents, Laurence Barnes Brough (age 37) and Hellen (age 37), and two siblings, at: 42 Tunis Street, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
