John Brough

In the 1880  Census, John Brough is listed as being 12 years old (born about 1868), born in Pennsylvania, and residing with his father, John Brough, and apparent step-mother, Hannah, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.  Also, the 1880 Census lists John Brough's father as being born in Wurttemberg, Germany, and his mother as being born in Dornstadt, Germany.

In the 1900 Census, John Brough is listed as being 27 years old (born about 1873), born in Maryland, married for five years (married in about 1895) and working as a "Car Conductor", and residing with his wife, Gertrude, in Baltimore Ward 17, Baltimore City (Independent City), Maryland.  Also, the 1900 Census lists John Brough's father as being born in Pennsylvania, and his mother as being born in Maryland.

In the 1910 Census, John Brough is listed as being 38 years old (born about 1872), born in Pennsylvania, a "Widower" working as a "Carpenter [of] House[s]" who had been married for 17 years, and residing with his four children, in Philadelphia Ward 42, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In the 1920 Census, John Brough is listed as being 47 years old (born about 1873), born in Pennsylvania, a "Widower" working as a "Carpenter [of] Houses", and residing with his two children in Philadelphia Ward 42, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In the 1930 Census, John Brough is listed as being 59 years old (born about 1871), born in Pennsylvania, a "Widower" working as a "Contractor [and] builder", and residing in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The birth (1867) and death (1931) of John Brough is listed on his gravestone which is viewable on "Find A Grave" website (Memorial # 82044206) in the Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

John Brough

In the 1880  Census, John Brough is listed as being 30 years old (born about 1850), born in Wurtemburg (Wurttemberg), Germany, married and working as a "Rag Dealer, and residing with his wife, Hannah, and their children, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.  Also, the 1880 Census lists John Brough's parents as both being born in Wurttemberg, Germany.

John Brough became a "Naturalized" citizen of the United States on 8 October 1866.  According to his Naturalization paper (via Ancestry.com), he was a former "subject" of the "King of Wutemberg [Wurttemberg]" and "arrived in the Port of New York in the year 1850".  Based on John Brough's Naturalization paper, and the 1880 Census which lists him as being "30 years" old--so born about 1850, it is likely that John Brough was either an infant or young child when he arrived in the Port of New York in 1850.

Geographical Note:  Wikipedia states the following about Wurttemberg, Germany: "The Kingdom of Württemberg (German: Königreich Württemberg) was a state that existed from 1806 to 1918, located in present-day Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was a continuation of the Duchy of Württemberg, which came into existence in 1495."

The 1880 Census lists the mother of Elizabeth Brough (born about 1864)  and John Brough (born about 1868) as being born in Dornstadt, Germany.


Elizabeth Brough

Elizabeth Brough appears to have been adopted into the family of John Brough.  This is partly based on the following information: In the 1880  Census, Elizabeth Brough is listed as being 16 years old (born about 1864), born in Pennsylvania, working in a "Wollen Factory, and residing with her mother, Hannah, and her apparent step-father, John Brough, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.  Also, the 1880 Census lists Elizabeth Brough's father as being born in Wurttemberg, Germany, and her mother as being born in Dornstadt, Germany.
