William Wilson Brough

"Wilson Brough" or "William Wilson Brough" was born on 26 May 1870 in Kilspindie, Perthshire, Scotland.  While in Scotland, he worked as a "House Thatcher".  On 13 June 1900, Wilson married his first wife, Matilda M. McCraw, in Edinburgh, and they subsequently had a son, William Mathison Brough.  In 1908, Wilson, then a "Widow", sailed with his young son, William, from Scotland to the United States aboard the vessel "S.S. California.  By 1910, Wilson had settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he married his second wife, Annie Bone (1876-1964) on 22 August 1910.  They had two sons: Charles Henry Brough (1914-1930) and Gordon Bone Brough (1917-1970).  While living in Salt Lake City, Wilson worked as a "Cabinet Maker" and "Carpenter", and was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Scotch Club.  Wilson died on 24 July 1960 in Provo, Utah, and is buried in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the 1871 Census for Scotland, "Wilson Brough" is listed as being 7 years old (born about 1864), born in Kilspindie, Perthshire, and residing his father, "Wm Brough" (age 44 and born in Errol, Perthshire) and three siblings (Agnes--age 19 and born in Errol; Alexr--age 17 and born in Errol; and John--age 11 and born in Kilspindie), in Rait Village, Kilspindie, Perthshire, Scotland.

In the 1881 Census for Scotland, "Wilson Brough" is listed as being 16 years old (born about 1865), born in Errol, Perthshire, working as an "Apprentice Thatcher", and residing with his parents, William Brough (age 54) and Mary (age 39), and an older sister (Agnes Brough--age 27), in Westown, Errol, Perthshire, Scotland.

The 1900 "statutory marriage" record of "Wilson Brough" and "Matilda M. McCraw" is available on the online ScotlandsPeople website, which record states that they were married by Banns on 13 June 1900 at 3 St. John's Street in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; that "Wilson Brough" was a Bachelor and Thatcher of Westown, Errol, and that his father was "William Brough", a Thatcher, and his mother was "Mary Spence (deceased)"; and that "Matilda M. McCraw" was a Spinster and Carter of Edinburgh, and that her father was "Samuel McCraw, an "Engine Fitter (deceased)", and her mother was "Agnes Spratt".

In the 1901 Census for Scotland, "Wilson Brough" is listed as being 35 years old (born about 1866), born in Kilspendie, Perthshire, married and working as a "House Thatcher", and residing with his wife, Matildan (age 25) and their young son, William (age 6 months old), in the home of his father, William Brough (age 75) and his apparent step-mother, Mary (age 62), at: Cottage - Westbourn Hamlet, Errol, Perthshire, Scotland.

On 1 August 1908, "William Brough", who is listed as being 38 years old (born about 1870) and a "Widow" and "Fitter" whose "last permanent residence" was "Kinnaid, Perthshire", Scotland, and whose destination was "Salt Lake City", sailed from Glasgow, Scotland, aboard the ship "S.S. In the 1910 U.S. Census, "William Brough" is listed as being 43 years old (born about 1867), born in Scotland, immigrated to the United States in 1907, "Widowed" and working as a "Cabinet Maker" in a "Factory", and residing as a "Lodger" in the home of D. G. Hodgins in Salt Lake City Ward 2, Salt Lake County, Utah.  According to the 1910 Census, William Brough's parents were both born in Scotland.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, "William W. Brough" is listed as being 48 years old (born about 1872), born in England, immigrated to the United States in 1890, married and working as a "Carpenter", and residing with his wife, Annie (age 43), and their two sons, Charles H. Brough (age 5) and Gordan B. Brough (age 2 years and 10 months old), and residing in Salt Lake City Ward 3, Salt Lake County, Utah. According to the 1920 Census, William Brough's father was born in Scotland, and his mother was born in England.  

In the 1930 U.S. Census, "William J. Brough" is listed as being 58 years old (born about 1872), born in England, immigrated to the United States in 1891, married and working as a "Custodian" in an "Office Building", and residing with his wife, Norma (age 53), and his son, Gordon Brough (age 13), in Salt Lake City 5th Ward, Salt Lake County, Utah.  According to the 1930 Census, William Brough's father was born in Scotland and his mother was born in England.  

On 11 February 1935, "Wilson Brough" applied for U.S. Citizenship in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The information on his "Utah Naturalization and Citizenship Record" (via Ancestry.com), states the following: Name: Wilson Brough; Age: 64; Birth: 26 May 1870; Place of birth: Perth, Scotland; Current residence: Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah; Spouse: Annie Bone, who was born on 10 October 1876 in Kaysville, Utah; Married: 22 August 1910 in Salt Lake City; Emmigrated to the United States under the name of "Wilson Brough" and traveled aboard the vessel "S.S. California" from Glasgow, Scotland to the United States on 10 August 1908; Current residence: 445 Denver Street, Salt Lake City, Utah; Employment: "Unemployed"; Height: 5 feet 11 inches tall; Weight: 179 pounds; Complexion: Light; Eyes: Brown; Hair: Dark Gray; Race: Scotch; Children: Two then living in Salt Lake City: William Mathison Brough--who was born on 7 October 1900 in Perth, Scotland; and Gordon Bone Brough--who was born on 13 February 1917 in Salt Lake City.   

In the 1940 U.S. Census, "Wilson W. Brough" is listed as being 70 years old (born about 1870), born in England, "Retired" and residing with his wife, Annie B. Brough, at: 445 Denver Street, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

The death record of "William Wilson Brough" is listed online (via the Utah state government website), and states that he died from "Massive hemorrhage into Gastro-Intestinal tract" and a "duodenal Ulcer" at 12:30 A.M. on 24 June 1960 at the age of 89 years old (born about 1871) at the Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah Co., Utah.  He was born in Scotland, worked as a "Ship Builder - Cabinet Maker"; his usual residence was "445 Denver Street, Salt Lake City, Utah"; and his father was "William Brough", his mother was "Mary Spence" and his spouse was "Annie Bone Brough".

The obituary of "William W. Brough" is listed in the Deseret News newspaper of Monday, July 25, 1960, page B17 (FHL Film # 215450), and reads as follows: "William Wilson Brough, 90 [years old], 445 Denver Street (440 East), died late Saturday night in a Provo hospital of causes incident to age.  Born [in] Perth, Scotland, to William and Mary Spence Brough.  Married Annie Bone [on] Aug. 22, 1910. Salt Lake City retired cabinet maker.  Member [of the] Presbyterian Church, Scotch Club, Senior Citizens Club. Came to Utah [in] 1908.  Survivors: widow; son, Gordon, San Pedro, Calif.; one grandchild."

"William W. Brough" is listed in the online FindAGrave website, Memorial #: 104953636, which states (and his gravestone lists) that he was born on 26 May 1870, died on 23 July 1960, and is buried in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Also, the death and burial of "William W. Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (via the "BillionGraves Index").

Annie Bone

In the 1920 U.S. Census, "Annie Brough" is listed as being 43 years old (born about 1877), born in Utah, married and residing with her husband, William W. Brough (age 48), and their two sons, Charles H. Brough (age 5) and Gordan B. Brough (age 2 years and 10 months old), and residing in Salt Lake City Ward 3, Salt Lake County, Utah.  According to the 1920 Census, Annie's parents were both born in England.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, "Norma Brough"--which should have been recorded as "Annie Brough"--is listed as being 53 years old (born about 1877), born in Utah, married and residing with her husband, William J. Brough, (age 58), and their son, Gordon Brough (age 13), in Salt Lake City 5th Ward, Salt Lake County, Utah.  According to the 1930 Census, Norma's parents were both born in England.

In the 1940 U.S. Census, "Annie B. Brough" is listed as being 63 years old (born about 1877), born in Utah, and residing with her husband, "Wilson W. Brough" at: 445 Denver Street, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

The obituary of "Annie Bone Brough" is listed in the Deseret News newspaper of October 23, 1964, page 6B (FHL Film # 2403562), and reads as follows: "Annie Bone Brough, 88, died Thursday at 4 a.m.  Born Oct. 10, 1876, Kaysville, a daughter of William Henry and Ellen Carter Bone.  Married William W. Brough, Salt Lake City.  He died July 23, 1960.  Member, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Former member Senior Citizens Group, Salt Lake City.  Survivors: Son, Gordon B., San Pedro, California; stepson, William Naisbitt, Salt Lake City; granddaughter, Calif.  Funeral pending, from 36 E. 7th South."

In March 2014, a BFO researcher contacted the Deseret Memorial Mortuary, located at: 36 East 700 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84111 (phone: 801-364-6528), and was told by an official of the mortuary that Annie Bone Brough was buried on Monday, 26 October 1964, in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Salt Lake City, and that she had a "son, Gordon Brough" who lived in "California", and a "niece, Virginia Birkinshaw" who lived in Salt Lake City.

The marriage of "William E. Brough" and "Anna Bone" is listed in the online "BYUI Western States Marriage Record Index", and states that they were marired on 22 August 1910 in Salt Lake County, Utah; and that William was 39 years old (born about 1871) and of Salt Lake City, Utah; and that Anna Bone was 34 years old (born about 1876) and of Salt Lake City, Utah.


Charles Henry Brough

In the 1920 U.S. Census, "Charles H. Brough" is listed as being 5 old (born about 1915), born in Utah, and residing with his parents, William W. Brough (age 48) and Annie Brough (age 43), and his younger brother, Gordon B. Brough (age 2 years and 10 months old), and residing in Salt Lake City Ward 3, Salt Lake County, Utah.

The Utah death certificate of Charles Henry Brough states that he was born on 14 May 1914 in Salt Lake City as the son of William W. Brough of England and Annie Bone of Utah; that he and died on 29 May 1930 in the Salt Lake City General Hospital; and that he was buried on 31 March 1930 in the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake County.  

"Charles H. Brough" is listed in the online FindAGrave website, Memorial #: 104943755, which states that he is buried in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, and that he was born in 1914 and died in 1930.

Gordon Bone Brough

In the 1920 U.S. Census, "Gordon B. Brough" is listed as being "2 years and 10 months" old (born about February 1917--as the 1920 Census reflected the status of individuals on 1 January 1920), born in Utah, and residing with his parents, William W. Brough (age 48) and Annie Brough (age 43), and his older brother, Charles H. Brough (age 5), and residing in Salt Lake City Ward 3, Salt Lake County, Utah.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, "Gordon Brough" is listed as being 13 years old (born about 1917), born in Utah, and residing with his parents, William J. and Norma (whose given name should have been recorded as Annie) Brough, in Salt Lake City 5th Ward, Salt Lake County, Utah.  According to the 1930 Census, Gordon Brough's father was born in England and his mother was born in Utah.

The birth, death and burial of Gordon Bone Brough is listed in the online "U.S. Veterans Gravesites, 1775-2006" (via Ancestry.com), which states that he was born on 13 February 1917, died on 3 December 1970, and interred on 21 December 1970 at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, in San Diego, California.  He enlisted in the US Navy in 1936, was "BMGC US Navy World War II, [and] Korea", and his "Service Start Date"--apparently related to the Korean War--was on "1 July 1953".

"Gordon Brough" is listed in the online FindAGrave website, Memorial #: 3389489, which states that he is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California, and that he was born on February 13, 1917, and died on December 3, 1970.

In the 1841 Census for Scotland, "William Brough" is listed as being 14 years old (born about 1827), born in Perthshire, Scotland, working as/in "Linen H L W", and residing with his apparent parents, James Brough (age 35) and Mary (age 35), and apparent six siblings (James--age 12; Ann--age 9; Mary--age 6; Margaret--age 4; Betty--age 4; and David--age 1), in Argath Smithy, Errol, Perthshire.

In the 1851 Census for Scotland, "William Brough" is listed as being 24 years old (born about 1827), born in Errol, Perthshire, working as a "Thatcher", and residing with his parents, James Brough (age 50) and Mary (age 50), and six siblings (James--age 22; Mary--age 15; Margret--age 13; Betsey--age 13; David--age 11; and John--age 8), in Drums, Errol, Perthshire.

The christening of Richard Brough is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471086, Item #10), which states that he was christened on 29 November 1801 as the son of Abraham and Ann Brough, and that Abraham Brough was a "Joiner".  Also, the christening of Richard Brough is listed in the IGI (via LDS Patron submission and the LDS Extraction Program: FHL Film # 421571).

The 1823 marriage of "Richard Brough" and "Anne Handley" is listed in the Bishop's Transcripts of Cheadle, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 426522), which states that they were married by Banns on 17 November 1823 in Cheadle; that Richard Brough was of a Bachelor and of the parish of Stone; and that Anne Handley was a Spinster of "this parish" [of Cheadle].  The marriage was witnessed by George Salt and Ann Preston.

In the 1841 Census, "Richard Brough" is listed as being 45 years old (born about 1792-1796), born in Staffordshire, working as an "Engineer", and residing with his apparent wife, Ann (age 45), and his apparent father, Abraham Brough (age 65), at: Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire.

In the 1851 Census, "Richard Brough" is listed as being 51 years old (born about 1800), born in Caverswall, Staffordshire, married and working as an "Engineer", and residing with his wife, Ann (age 55), at: Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire.

The 1855 marriage of Richard Brough and Fanny Averill is listed in the parish register of Caverswall, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1278996, Item #18), which states that they were married on 7 May 1855 and that Richard Brough was 54 years old (born about 1801), a Widower and Labourer of Longton, and that his father was Abraham Brough, a Wheel Wright, and that Fanny Averill was 20 years old (born about 1835), a Spinster of Adderly Green, and that her father was Thomas Averill, a Waggoner.  The marriage was witnessed by Henry Jones and Fanny Timmis.

In the 1861 Census, "Richard Brough" is listed as being 60 years old (born about 1801), born in Longton, Staffordshire, married and working as a "Miller", and residing with his wife, Fanny (age 27), and their three children (Ann--age 5, Louisa--age 4, and Harriet--age 2), in Longton, Staffordshire.

The death of "Richard Brough" is listed in the online FreeBMD and Staffordshire BMD, which combined states that his death was registered in April-June 1867 in Longton subdistrict, Stoke-upon-Trent district, Staffordshire, and that he died when he was about 67 years old (born about 1800).

The burial of "Richard Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471087, Item #14), which states that he was buried on 12 May 1867 in Longton, and that he died when he was about "67 years" old (born about 1800).

Research Note:  Following the death of her first husband, Richard Brough (1801-1867), Fanny Everill (Brough) apparently had seven more children between 1869 and 1881: Sarah Brough, born 1869; Thomas Benjamin Brough, born 1871; Martha Brough, born 1873; Jane Brough, born 1875; Clara Brough, born 1877; Martha Brough, born 1879; and Samuel Abraham Brough, born 1881.  The father of these seven children may have been "Benjamin Sims", who according to the 1871 and 1881 Census lived as a "Lodger" or "Boarder" in the home of Fanny Brough, a "Widow", in Longton, Staffordshire.  In fact, Fanny may have named her son, Thomas Benjamin Brough, after her father Thomas Everill and her lodger Benjamin Sims.


Ann Handley

The christening of "Ann Handley" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film #'s 417186 and 426528), which states that she was christened on 8 December 1793 in Colton, Staffordshire, and that her parents were "Thos. Handley" and "Ann".

The 1823 marriage of "Richard Brough" and "Anne Handley" is listed in the Bishop's Transcripts of Cheadle, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 426522), which states that they were married by Banns on 17 November 1823 in Cheadle; that Richard Brough was of a Bachelor and of the parish of Stone; and that Anne Handley was a Spinster of "this parish" [of Cheadle].  The marriage was witnessed by George Salt and Ann Preston.

In the 1841 Census, "Ann Brough" is listed as being 45 years old (born about 1792-1796), born in Staffordshire, and residing with her apparent husband, Richard Brough (age 45), and Richard's apparent father, Abraham Brough (age 65), at: Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire.

In the 1851 Census, "Ann Brough" is listed as being 55 years old (born about 1796), born in Colton, Staffordshire, married and working in "Domestic Duties", and residing with her husband, Richard Brough (age 51), at: Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire.  

The burial of "Ann Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471087, Item # 13), which states that she was buried on 18 September 1854 in Longton, Staffordshire, and that she died when she was about "63 years" old (born about 1791).

The first christening of Abraham Brough is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471086, Item #12), which states that he was christened on 6 February 1825 as the son of Richard and Ann Brough of Lane End, and that Richard Brough was a Potter.

The second christening of Abraham Brough is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471086, Item #12), which states that he was christened (again) on 2 October 1825 as the son of Richard and Ann Brough of Lane End, and that Richard Brough was a Potter.

The burial of Abraham Brough is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471087, Item #10), which states that Abraham Brough was of Lane End and that he was about "1 year" old when he was buried on 27 February 1826.

In the 1901 Census, "Fanny Brough" is listed as being "64" years old (born about 1837), born in Longton, Staffordshire, a "Widow" working as a "Charwoman", and residing in the home of her married daughter, Elizabeth Colclough (age 36), and her husband, Samuel Colclough (age 40), and their two children, at: 10 Weston Place, Longton, Staffordshire.

The 1909 death certificate of "Fanny Brough" was obtained from the GRO in England by the Brough Family Organization in August 2025, and states that she died of "Apoplexy" and "Natural causes" on 9 September 1909 at the age of "72" years old (born about 1837) at "128 Heathcote Road, Longton, Staffordshire, England, and that she was the "Widow of Richard Brough" a "Potters Mills Labourer".
