The marriage of Lawrence Brough and Helen Taylor is listed in the marriage records of the District of Burgh of Dundee, County of Fortar, Scotland (FHL Film # 224166, Parish # 282), which states that they were married by Banns (according to the United Presbyterian Church) on 13 September 1861 at: 49 Albert Street, Dundee; and that Lawrence Brough was 29 years old (born about 1832), a Bachelor and Shopkeep of Dallfield Terrace, Dundee, and that his parents were John Brough, a Night Watchman (deceased), and Elizabeth Crougie; and that Helen Taylor was 26 years old (born about 1835), a Spinster and Power Loom Weaver of 49 Albert Street, Dundee, and that her father was James Taylor, a Farm Servant (deceased) and Elizabeth Morrison.  The marriage was witnessed by James Brough and Rose Jamieson.

In June 2011, Lionel Brough Martin provided the following information to the RBFO: "Laurence Brough was a tobacconist--I presume in Dundee."

Edward Joseph Lane

In March 2012, a relative provided the BFO with a copy fo the following newspaper obituary on Edward Joseph Lane:
     "Bullhead City, Arizona - Eddie Lane, 90, a 1930 graduate of East Liverpool High School [in East Liverpool, Columbiana, Ohio] died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in a nursing home in Bullhead City after a long illness.
    "Lane started his radio career at East Liverpool's first radio station, WLIO, which was located in Mike Turk's automobile show room.  He went on to become a familiar voice in the '40s and '50s to sports fans in the Tri-State Area.  He moved on to WOHI, where he did the first broadcast of a Potters football game.
    "Lane moved to Youngstown with his family in the mid '50s to become sports director at WFMJ Teleivison and hosted a popular nightly sports broadcast.  Moving on to Columbus, he became the voice of the Ohio State football and basketball games.
    "Before retiring from broadcasting, Lane moved to Palm Desert, Calif., where he aired a weekly call-in sports show in Palm Springs.  He resided there until his illness in 2000 confined him to the nursing home.
   "Preceding him in death were his first wife, Jean Hassell Lane, also originally from East Liverpool, and his second wife, Marjorie Crohn Lane from Youngstown, with whom he lived in Palm Desert until her death in 1998.  Lane is survived by two daughters, Pollyanna Infante of Bullhead City and Linda Wooley of Woodland Hills, Calif., as well as a sister, Martha Handley of Chester.  He also leaves a nephew, Kenneth Lane, and a niece, Emily Lane Gabbert, both of East Liverpool, as well as five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
    "No local services are planned."


Jean Caroline Hassall

In March 2012, a relative provided the BFO with a copy fo the following newspaper obituary on Jean Caroline Hassall Lane:
    "East Liverpool - A memorial reception will be held at the Dawson Family Center, 220 W. Fifth St., in East Liverpool from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, for Jean Hassall Lane, age 88, who died at the residence of her daughter Linda Lane Wooley in Woodland Hills, Calif., on Feb. 9, 2001.  She had been in failing health for the past several months.
    "Mrs. Lane was born in East Liverpool Jan. 10, 1913, a daughter of the late William Hassall and Emma Conrad Hassall.  She was educated in the local school system and was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1930.  She then attended Thiel College and received her undergraduate degree from Youngstown University.
    "Prior to moving to California in the 1960s, Mrs. Lane taught in the East Liverpool School system.  She continued her teaching career at Wilmington Junior High in California and received her master of education degree at Long Beech State.  She retired in 1975.
    "While in East Liverpool she was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Coterie Club.  She continued her membership in the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association, returning for several reunion functions.
    "In addition to her daughter, her family includes her son-in-law, Peter Wooley, with when she resided, and a daughter, Mrs. Dominic (Pollyanna) Infante of Bullhead City, Ariz.  Her grandchildren include Stephani Angelini and her husband Richard of Westlake Village, Calif.; Christopher Wooley and his wife Carmel of West Hills, Calif.; Dominic Infante Jr. and his wife Nancy of Redondo Beach, Calif., Jason Infante and Nicole Infante of Torrence, Calif.  There are five great-grandchildren: Katie Angelini, Anthony Angelini and Elizabeth Angelini all of Westlake Village, Tucker Lane Wooley of West Hills and Andrea Scott of Torrence.
    "Burial will take place in the family plot at Riverview Cemetery.  Arrangements by the Dawson Funeral Home, 215 W. Fifth St., East Liverpool.  Memorial contributions may be made in care of Silent Unity, 1901 N.W. Blue Parkway, Unity Village, Mo., 64065."

The death of "John Brough" is listed in the online "Social Security Death Index" (via Ancestry.com), which states that his SSN# was 122-01-7875, that he was born on 12 April 1906, died in July 1976, and that his last residence was: 13601 Watertown, Jefferson, New York.

In the 1910 Census (taken on April 23-25, 1910), "John Alfred Brough" is listed as being about 4 years old (born about 1906), born in English Canada, and residing with his parents, Richard H. and Lillie M. Brough, in: Norfolk, St. Lawrence, New York.  Also, John's father was born in English Canada, and his mother was born in English Canada.

In the 1920 Census (taken on January 12, 1920), "John A. Brough" is listed as being about 13 years old (born about 1807), born in New York, and residing with his parents, Richard H. and Lillian Brough, and one brother, in: East Moulton, Watertown Ward 12, Jefferson, New York.  Also, John's father was born in England, and his mother was born in Canada.

In the 1930 Census (taken on April 22, 1930), "John A. Brough" is listed as being about 23 years old (born about 1907), born in English Canada, immigrated to the United States in 1909, married when he was 18 years old (married in about 1925) and working as a Laborer in a Machine Factory, and residing with his wife, Dorothy A., and their three sons in Apt. #30, in Watertown, Jefferson, New York.  Also, John's father was born in England, and his mother was born in Engllish Canada.

The death of "Dorothy A. Marriam" is listed in the online "Social Security Death Index" (via Ancestry.com), which states that her SSN# was 085-14-0520, that she was born on 17 June 1908, died in April 1996, and that her last residence was: 13601 Watertown, Jefferson, New York.

In the 1930 Census (taken on April 22, 1930), "Dorothy A. (Brough)" is listed as being about 20 years old (born about 1910), born in New York, married when she was about 16 years old (married in about 1926) and residing with her husband, John A. Brough, and their three sons in Apt. #30, in Watertown, Jefferson, New York.  Also, Dorothy's father was born in New York, and her mother was born in New York.


Lawrence S. Brough

In the 1930 Census (taken on April 22, 1930), "Lawrence S. Brough" is listed as being "10/12" of a year old (born about July 1929), born in New York, and residing with his parents, John A. and Dorothy A. Brough, and his two brothers, in Apt. #30, in Watertown, Jefferson, New York.


Robert Chapman

In June 2011, Jenny Haycock of New Zealand informed the RBFO that "Robert died in 1882 Melbourne [Victoria, Australia] while on a trip to buy sheep."


Sarah Brough

The christening of Sarah Brough is listed in the parish register of the Cathedral Church of Manchester, Lancashire (FHL Film # 438167), which states that she was christened on 23 February 1817 as the daughter of John and Mary Brough of Manchester, and that John Brough (the father) was a Spinner.

The christening of Sarah Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Films # 443329 and/or 438168), and in FamilySearch.org (via FHL Film # 438167).

In the 1841 Census, Sarah Brough is listed as being about 19 years old (born about 1822), born in Lancashire, England, working as a "Millines" while residing in the residence of Thomas and Harriet Johnson (a Draper) at: 42 King Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

Research Note:  Sarah Brough (and her parents and siblings) can not be found in the 1851 British Census--which is probably due to the fact that the 1851 Census returns for much of Manchester, Lancashire, were damaged by water during storage.  After 1841, Sarah Brough does not appear in any British Census.

In July 2011, Jenny Haycock of New Zealand obtained a copy of the death certificate of Sarah Chapman from New Zealand, and forwarded a copy of her death certificate to the RBFO.  The death certificate states that Sarah Chapman died on 17 April 1908 in Raugiora (South Island) New Zealand, from "Cardiac" problems at the age of 86 (born about 1822); that her father was a "Brough" (although no given name was listed for her father and no mother was listed); that she was buried on 20 April 1908 in the Church of England cemetery in Raugiora (South Island, New Zealand); that she was born in Manchester (Lancashire), England, and had lived in New Zealand for 55 years (arrived in New Zealand in about 1853); that she married Robert Chapman in Lyttelton (South Island, New Zealand) when she was 28 years old (married in about 1850); and that she was the mother of six children: four males, age 56 (born about 1852), 53 (born about 1855), 50 (1858), 46 (1862); and two females, age 48 (1860) and 45 (1863).

Death listed in the online NEw Zealand BDM Historical Records (Feb 2, 2011), which lists this individual's name and year of death (but no age is listed).

Marriage Notes for Robert Chapman and Sarah Brough-21050

The marriage of Robert Chapman and Sarah Brough was provided to the RBFO in June 2011 by Jenny Haycock of New Zealand, who stated that they were married on "23 October 1851 in Lyttelton, New Zealand" and that Robert and Sarah Chapman had "eight children and lived in Canterbury [where] Robert was a farmer and owned a property called Springbank".

The 1865 birth certificate of "Samuel James Machin" was obtain from the GRO in England in May 2021 by the Brough Family Organization, and stated that he was born on 20 July 1865 at Normacot Road in Longton district, Staffordshire, England, and that his mother was "Margaret Machin" of Normacot Road, Longton.  (Note: The name of Samuel's father is not listed on the birth certificate.)  Relationship Note:  Several historical documents suggest that "Samuel James Machin" may have been the biological son of "Samuel Brough", rather than the son of "Henry Edward Machin".  For example: 1) No father is listed in the 1865 birth certificate of Samuel James Machin, only his mother, "Margaret Machin" (nee Plant), is listed--even though she was still apparently married to her first husband, Henry Edward Machin ; 2) In the 1861 Census, Samuel's mother, Margaret Machin (nee Plant), and her husband, Henry E.
