Research Note: The family of James and Eliza Brough has not yet (as of February 2011) been found in the 1851 Census--probably due to the likelihood that they were living in the area of Lancashire in which the census records were later damaged or destroyed.
Research Note: In February 2010, the RBFO Research Committee could NOT locate the christening of James Brough in the small parish register of Tiverton Cove (FHL Book # 942.35, C53, K29b) that contained baptisms for 1813-1839.

All his lands to his wife Joan so long as she does not remarry; if she does, then to his brother Renard Brough on the condition that he uses the profits to bring up his [Ralph's] children Anne, Elizabeth, Margaret and Jarvis until the age of 21. At the death of his wife his son Jarvis is to have all his lands in Chesterfield and Tapton. All his goods and chattels to his wife Joan and daughters Anne, Elizabeth and Margaret. 2s to his daughter Alice Ingman. His wife Joan and brother Renard are his executors. Inventory taken by Godfrey Heathcote, Thomas Slighe, John Fowller and John Tupman, 1619." Sum total (or total value) of Inventory: £147, 17s, 8d.
Relationship Note: Based on available parish registers and extensive radius searches it seems probable that the "Gervase Broughe" who was born in about 1606 and christened in 1611 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, is the same "Gervase Brough" who married Grace Hope in 1628 in Dalbury, Derbyshire. Interestingly, the father of Gervase Brough of Chesterfield (who was Ralph Brough) served as a Church Warden in 1611 in Chesterfield, while Gervase Brough of Dalbury also served as a Church Warden in 1629 in Dalbury. The travel distance from Chesterfield south to Dalbury is about 30 miles.
The 1679 "Will" and "Inventory of Goods" of "Gervase Brough" is listed in the online Lichfield Record Office repository as being dated 22 October 1679, and is listed in FHL Film # 95679. These documents were carefully reviewed in December 2013 by Ethel M. Brough and MEG of the Research Committee of the Brough Family Organization. In his Will, dated 2 October 1679, Gervase mentions his family members as follows: 1) his "loving wife Grace" who was also "my executor"; 2) "my two [minor] children Josiah and Samuel Brough towards their present maintenance"; 3) his son [by his first wife] "Raph Broughe"; 4) his son [by his first wife] "John Broughe"; 5) his son [by his first wife] "Gervase Brough"; 6) the "mother in law" to his "son Gervase Brough" who was named "Ann Towers" [or "Jowers"]. Also in his Will, Gervase mentions that he is "to be buried in [the] parish church and chanchel [chancel*] at Dalbury"; that his property consists of: 1) "lands in Dalbury which he gives to his "loving wife Grace"; 2) "my houses and land in Nether..."[?]; 3) "my land in Bolton" [Boulton]; and 4) "my land in Dalbury Lees" which he gives to "my two [minor] children Josiah and Samuel Brough towards their present maintenance". In the probated portion of the documents, Gervase is mentioned as being "late of Dalbury Lees, county of Derby, Gentleman deceased", and that some of his assets were to be spent for "tuition and education" of "Josiah and Samuel Brough" the "natural and lawful children of deceased in their minority" and that "Henry Archbold" was to rightfully "educate and bring up said children" with adequate "meat, drink, lodging and apparel". [*Note: In church architecture the chancel--or presbytery--is the space around the altar in the sanctuary at the liturgical east end of a traditional Christian church building.]
The 1679 burial of Gervase Brough is listed in the parish register of Dalbury (FHL Film # 1042042, Item #14), which states that he was buried on 11 October 1679.
Relationship Note: Radius searches and family patronymics suggest that Gervase Brough may have been the son of Ralph Brough (b.1559; Rin# 1734) of Waterhouse, Leek, Staffordshire--who was the son of Thomas Burgh (b.1523) of Leek. For instance, Gervase names two of his sons, Ralph and Robert, which are the same given names of two of Thomas Burgh's known sons. Also, it is possible that several of the sons of Thomas Burgh (b.1523) of Leek, eventually moved and settled in Derbyshire, including: 1) Richard Burgh who was born about 1549 in Leek and is probably the same individual who married Alicia in 1592 in Baslow; 2) Thomas Burgh who was born about 1551 in Leek and is probably the same individual who married in about 1571 in Baslow; 3) Robert Burgh who was born about 1555 in Leek and is probably the same individual who was buried in 1617 in Baslow; and 4) Anthony Burgh who was born about 1561 in Leek and is probably the same individual who married in about 1583 in Baslow. Further research into the possible relationship between Gervase Brough (b.1604) and Thomas Burgh (b.1523) is currently being conducted by the Brough Family Organization.
