Elias Marshall

The christening of Elias Marshall is listed in the IGI (via LDS Patron submission and the LDS Extraction Program--via FHL Film # 421913); and the Bishop Transcript record of this event (FHL Film # 421913, Item #1) states that "Elias the son of Marke Marshall and Sarah his wife was baptized" in Baumber on 9 December 1662.

Elias Marshall was a "husbandman"--according to the christening record of his son, William Marshall.

The marriage of Elias Marshall and Mary Sharpe is listed in the Bishop Transcript of Welton-le-Wold (FHL Film # 508085, Item #3), which states that "Mary Sharpe of Wolten and Elias Marshall of Asterby maryed [on] June 29, 1686".  Also, their marriage is listed in the parish register of Welton-le-Wold (FHL Film # 1542006, Item #2--but hard to find in the film), which states that "Mary Sharpe of this parish and Elias Marshall of Asterby married [on] June 29, 1686".  In addition, the marriage of Elias Marshall and Mary Sharpe is listed in the IGI.


Sara Marshall

The christening of Sara Marshall is listed in the Bishop Transcript of Asterby (FHL Film # 421897, Item #1), which states that "Sara [the] d[aughter of] Elias and Marie Marshall" was christened on 27 September 1687.  Also, the christening of Sara Marshall is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film # 421897).

Research Note:  The marriage of Marke Marshall and Sarah possibly took place in Baumber, but the Bishop Transcript records for Baumber (FHL Film # 421913, Item #1) are missing for the period of 1641 to 1661 (probably due to the British civil war of the mid-1600's).  Also (and unfortunately) no parish records are available (at the FHL in SLC, Utah) for Baumber for the period of 1641 to 1661.

The christening of "Sarah Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. Peter, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, which states that she was christened on 13 September 1846 as the daughter of "John and Mary Brough" of "Upper Cliff Bank", and that John Brough was an "Engineer".

In the 1851 Census, Sarah Brough is listed as being about 5 years old (born about 1846), born in Stoke-on-Trent, and residing with her parents at: 12 Glebe Street, Penkhull, part of Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire.

The birth of Elizabeth Farnell is listed in the online FreeBMD, which lists her birth as being registered in April-June 1855 in the district of Newcastle under Lyme (which includes the township or civil parish of Whitmore), Staffordshire.

The birth of Elizabeth Brough is listed in the computerized database "They Came to New Zealand" produced by the Birmingham & Midland Institute (BMSGH), which states the following: "Elizabeth Brough was born 1854 at Whitmore in Staffordshire, died 23/06/1945, ref SO838. Notes: widow. 68 yrs in New Zealand."

Death listed in the online New Zealand BDM Historical Records (Feb 2, 2011), which lists this individual's name, year of death, and age at time of death (which was used to calculate an approximate birthdate).

Research Note:  The New Zealand birth certificates of the ten children of Elizabeth Farnell lists her age and calculated year of birth, which suggests that she was born sometime between 1854 and 1856 in Whitmore, Staffordshire, England.

In April 2011, the RBFO obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of John Brough and Elizabeth Farnell from England, which stated that they were married by Banns on 28 September 1872 in the parish church of St. George, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, and that John Brough was 22 years old (born about 1850), a Bachelor and Blacksmith of Clarence Street, and that his father was John Brough, a Potter; and that Elizabeth Farnell was 18 years old (born about 1854), a Spinster of Boundary Street, and that her father was William Farnell, a Tailor.  The marriage was witnessed by John Hudson and Ellen Hudson.  Also, the New Zealand birth certificates of the ten children of John Brough lists the marriage date and place of their parents, John Brough and Elizabeth Farnell, as having taken place on 28 September 1872 in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, England.


William Farnell Brough

In July 2014, the BFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of "William Farnell Brough" from England, which stated that he was born on 8 October 1873 at "Bridge Street, Fenton", Staffordshire; that his father was John Brough, a "Carriage Spring Maker", and his mother was "Elizabeth Brough formerly Farnell"; and that the informant of his birth was "Elizabeth Brough, Mother, [of] Bridge Street, Fenton".

The birth of "William Farnall Brough" is listed in the online FreeBMD and Staffordshire BMD, which combined states that his birth was registered October-December 1873 in Fenton subdistrict, Stoke-upon-Trent district, Staffordshire, and that his mother's surname was "Farnell".

The death of "William Farnall Brough" is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that his death was registered in January-March 1874 in Stoke-upon-Trent district, Staffordshire, and that he died when he was "0" years old (or under the age of one year old).

The burial of "William Farnall Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. Peter, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire (via FamilySearch Fiche # D3787/3/4), which states that he was buried on 18 March 1874 when he was "5 months" old, and that he was of "Stoke".

In March 2011, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of John Brough from New Zealand, which states that he was born on 23 October 1877 in Ravensbourne [Dunedin, Otago, South Island, New Zealand]; that his father was John Brough, a Blacksmith, 28 years old (born about 1849), born in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England; that his mother was Elizabeth Brough "formerly Farnell", 21 years old (born about 1856), born in Witmore [Whitmore], Staffordshire, England; that his parents were married on 28 September 1872 in Newcastle under Lyne [Newcastle under Lyme], Staffordshire, England; and that the informant of his birth was his father, John Brough, of Ravensbourne.

The birth of John Brough is listed in the online New Zealand BDM Historical Records (Feb 2, 2011), which lists his birth year as 1877 and his parents as John Brough and Elizabeth.

Brough, of South Dunedin.

In the 1851 Census, William Rushton is listed as being 30 years old (born about 1821), born in Manchester, Lancashire, married and working as a "Cordwainer Master", and residing with his wife, Mary A., and two children, in Spratslade, Trentham, Staffordshire.

In the 1861 Census, William Rushton is listed as being 39 years old (born about 1822), born in Manchester, Lancashire, married and working as a "Cordwainer", and residing with his wife, Mary A., and one child, in Spratslade, Blurton, Staffordshire.

The christening of "Mary Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 1278889), which states that she was christened on 10 May 1818 in Bucknall (Bucknall Cum Bagnall), Staffordshire, England, and that her parents were "William Brough" and "Ann".

The 1844 marriage of "William Rushton" and "Mirrian Brough" is listed and shown in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 101094673), which states that they were married by Banns on 24 November 1844 at St. Peter's church in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England, that they were "Both of full age", that William Rushton was a "Bachelor" and "Cordwainer" of "Both" (Bath) and that his father was "Wm [William] Rushton" a "Brickmaker", and that Mirrian Brough was a "Spinster" of "Fenton" and that her father was "Wm [William] Brough" a "Blacksmith".  The marriage was witnessed by Ann Bloor.

1842 Marriage: In May 2018 the Brough Family Organization obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of William Brough and Sarah Gould (or Gold) from England, which stated that they were married on 1 April 1842 in the parish church of Bucknall, Staffordshire; that William Brough was 22 years old (born about 1820), single (unmarried) and a Potter of Stoke-upon-Trent, and that his father was William Brough, a Miller; and that Sarah Gould was 20 years old (born about 1822), single (unmarried) and a Potter of Stoke-upon-Trent, and that her father was Jas. (James) Gould, a Miller.  The marriage was witnessed by John Brough and Sarah Brough.

The christening of "Sarah Gould" is listed in the parish register of Hamstall Ridware, Staffordshire (FHL Films # 7566691 and 426552, and as a FindMyPast parish record image), which states that she was christened on 28 September 1823 in Hamstall Ridware, and that her parents were "James and Elizabeth Gould" and that James Gould was a "Miller".

The birth of "Mary Jane Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that her birth was registered in April-June 1856 in Wolstanton district, Staffordshire, and that her mother's surname was "Gould".

The burial of "Mary Jane Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Burslem, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1278930, Item #7), which states that she was buried on 2 August 1856 in Burslem and that she was of "Hot Lane" and died when she was "4 mo[nths]" old.
