Historical Facts: Judith Brough (chr.1812), the mother of John Brough (1834-1910), was the younger sister of Thomas Brough (1797-1845) and John Brough (1804-1845). In 1845, Thomas and John had a serious disagreement over debts and property, which led to John murdering Thomas. This was a very sensational crime in Staffordshire, and resulted in John being hanged. Information about this crime can be viewed online at: https://sites.google.com/view/brough-family-organization/eng-staffordshire/brough-crimes
Historical Possibilities: Judith Brough may have possibly left Staffordshire in the 1840’s and settled in Lancashire by 1851 to escape the community drama surrounding her family’s murder. Also, Judith may have possibly named her illegitimate son, John (1834-1910), after her older brother John--which she did eleven years before John murdered his brother Thomas. In addition, John Brough (1834-1910) possibly knew about this murder, and his son, John Thomas Brough (1893-1972), was either given the middle name of “Thomas” by his father or voluntarily took it upon himself in remembrance of his murdered grand-uncle, Thomas Brough.
