Charles Saunders

The birth and christening of "Charles Saunders" is listed in the parish register of St. Gregory (Catholic), Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1999394, Item #8), which states that he was born on 8 May 1831 and christened on 15 May 1831 in St. Gregory, Longton, and that his parents were "Peter Saunders and Martha h[is] w[ife]" and that his "sponsor" was "George Saunders".

In 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of Charles Sanders and Ellen Brough from England, which stated that they were married on 14 September 1851 in the Catholic Church of St. Gregory Chapel in Longton, Staffordshire; that Charles Sanders was 20 years old (born about 1831), a Bachelor and Packer of High Street, Fenton, and that his father was Peter Sanders, a Shoemaker; and that Ellen Brough was "of full age" and a Spinster of Cross Street, Stoke-upon-Trent, and that her father was William Brough, a Shopkeeper.  The marriage was witnessed by Edward Thorley and Mary Sanders.

In the 1861 Census, "Charles Sanders" is listed as being 30 years old (born about 1831), born in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, married and working as a "Potter (Packer)", and residing with is wife, Ellen (age 32), and their three children (Ann Adelaide--age 7, Olive Julia--age 6, and Winefred--age 5), at: 4 Eldon Street, Penkhull (Township), Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England.

In the 1871 Census, "Charles Sanders" is listed as being 40 years old (born about 1831), born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, married and working as a "Second hand Clothes dealer", and residing with his wife, Ellen (age 42), and their six children (Adalaide--age 16, Olive--age 15, Winifride--age 14, Austin--age 9, Alfred--age 7, and Blanch--age 3), at: 37 Broad Street, Shelton (Township), Hanley (Town), Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.

In the 1881 Census, "Charles Sanders" is listed as being 49 years old (born about 1832), born in Fenton, Staffordshire, married and working as a "Potter's packer out of employ", and residing with his wife, Ellen (age 52), and their three children (Austin--age 19, Alfred--age 17, and Blanch--age 13), at: King Street, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England.


Ellen Brough

The christening of "Ellen Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 101049696), which states that she was christened on 5 April 1829 at St. Peter's church in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, and that her parents were "William Brough" and "Elizabeth", and that William Brough was a "Grocer".

In the 1841 Census, "Ellen Brough" is listed as being 12 years old (born about 1829), born in Staffordshire, working as an Ap[prentice] Milliner", and residing with her apparent parents, William Brough (age 40) and Elizabeth (age 35), and three apparent siblings, at: Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England.

In the 1851 Census, "Ellen Brough" is listed as being 22 years old (born about 1829), born in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, unmarried and working as a "Dress Maker", and residing with her unmarried sister, Julia Brough (age 17), in the home of Sarah Poulson (age 32), at: Cross Street, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
