Joseph Brough

The 1870 birth certificate of "Joseph Brough" was obtained from the GRO in England by the Brough Family Organization in January 2026, and states that he was born on 24 May 1870 in Alrewas, Yoxall subdistrict, Lichfield district, Staffordshire, England, and that his parents were "William Brough" a "Farm Labourer" and "Jane Brough formerly May".

In the 1871 Census, Joseph Brough is listed as being 11 months old (born May 1870--as the 1817 Census was taken on 2 April 1871), born in Alrewas, Staffordshire, and residing with his parents, William and Jane Brough, at: Alrewas, Staffordshire.  (Geographical Note:  Alrewas is about five miles north of Lichfield.)

William Henry Brough

The birth of "William Henry Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that his birth was registered in January-March 1872 in Burton upon Trent district, Derbyshire, and that his mother's surname was "Mear".  Also, the birth of William Henry Brough is listed in the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index.  Note: William's apparent twin sibling, Jane Brough, was also registered as being born in January-March 1872 and that her mother's surname was Mear.

Geographical Note:  Stepenhill is described in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stapenhill) as follows: "Stapenhill is an area and civil parish in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire in the UK. It was a small village owned by Nigel of Stafford as far back as 1086.... The village is east of the Trent, and thus was administered as part of Derbyshire from at least 1086 until the Local Government Act 1888, when it passed into Staffordshire as a result of boundary changes."

Historical Note:  The records of the LDS Loughborough Branch in Nottinghamshire during the years 1897 to 1915 (FHL Film # 87016, Item #21) states that "Harriet Elizabeth Squire" was born on 2 June 1854 in Stanley, Yorkshire, and that she was baptized on 18 April 1908 by C.E. Horsley and confirmed on 18 April 1908 by "Wm. H. Brough"--who was not a member of the LDS Loughborough Branch.  This "Wm H. Brough" was actually "William Henry Brough" (1872-1918), who served an LDS Mission to Great Britian between 27 November 1906 and 13 January 1909. The 1873 birth of "Agnes Ellen Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index, which states that her birth was registered in October-December 1873 in Burton upon Trent district, Staffordshire, England.

Alice Brough

In the 1891 British Census, Alice Brough is listed as being "10 months" old (born about 1890), born in Branstone (Branston), Staffordshire, and residing with her parents, William and Jane Brough, and three siblings (Hannah Brough--age 10, Mary A. Brough--age 7, and Albert Brough--age 4), at: Hunters Row, Old Road, Branston, Staffordshire.

In the 1901 British Census, Alice Brough is listed as being 10 years old (born about 1891), born in Branstone (Branston), Staffordshire, and residing with her parents, William and Jane Brough, and brother, Albert Brough (age 14), at: Old Road, Branston, Staffordshire.

In the 1910 U.S. Census, Alice Brough is listed as being 20 years old (born about 1890), born in England, immigrated in 1908 to the United States, single and working at "Housekeeping for others", and residing as a "Sister-in-law" in the household of James Meritt in Trenton, Cache Co., Utah.

According ot family sources, "Alice Brough" was "seduced by someone in the house" where she was staying and working at the time she became pregnant with her daughter, Evelyn Breeze Brough.


Evelyn Breeze Brough

In June 2013, the BFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Evelyn Breeze Brough from England, which stated that she was born on 16 October 1907 in Hunters Cottages, Branstone, Staffordshire, and that she was the daughter of Alice Brough, a Domestic Servant.  Unfortunately, no father is listed on the birth certificate.  However, the informant of the birth was listed as "J. [Jane] Brough, Grandmother, present at Birth, Hunters Cottages, Branstone".

In June 2013, the BFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of Evelyn Breeze Brough from England, which stated that she  died of "Debility from Birth Diarrhea" on 23 November 1907 at Hunters Cottages, Branstone, Staffordshire, when she was "18 days" old, and that she was the "Daughter of Alice Brough [a] Domestic Servant".  The informant of the death was "J. [Jane] Brough, Grandmother, present at death, Hunters Cottages, Branstone".

Georgraphical Note (from Wikipedia): "Branston is a village in Staffordshire, England. Branston was originally a small village beside the River Trent and lies to the south of Burton upon Trent. It spread in the 19th century along the main Burton to Lichfield road, which is now the dual carriageway A38. There is much 19th- and 20th-century housing along Clays Lane, north of the village, and along Burton Road to the east. Elsewhere, the land is mainly farmland, with the former Sinai Park in the northern part of the township. ...The parish church in Branston is St Saviour's, part of the Diocese of Lichfield."

Joseph Grant Brough

Grant Brough (as listed in the obituary) died 10-4-2004 in his home in Smithfield, Utah.  He served in the Navy during WWII.  He also served as an officer in the Air Force during the Korean War.  He taught school and also had his master's degree.
